Zero waste is the biggest lie I have ever heard. As long as you use vehicles, airplanes, trains or any diesel using method of transportation, you do not produce zero waste. When you go and buy recyclable jars and grocery bags it's not zero waste since since a method of transportation was used to avail them to your local grocery store. These recyclable 'zero waste' products are produced in factories which emmit waste. The point of this rant is that as humans we cannot produce zero waste all we can do is try and reduce it how we know best, so instead of using the term zero waste it's better if we used less waste.

Probably because she is going to unreasonable lengths. When it just impacting her, she can be as crazy with it as she wants, each to their own ya'know. But grilling the staff for putting a small sticker on her smoothie, and then insisting that she reuses it for someone else is annoying for the staff, but more importantly, it shows us the lengths this has manifested itself in her mind. She is fine with the sticker going on someone else's beverage, but not her own. This seems to imply that she has a issue in her mind, where as long as it isn't literally caused by her, then it is acceptable. This type of Obsessive compulsion will often grow over time, and make her a very frustrating individual to spend time with. Like I say, I'm not bashing her for being proactive at minimizing her waste, but there is definitely an unhealthy obsessive undertone here.

Robert Tolppi did a fantastic video on why she produces far *more* waste than the jar. If you ask me, the jar is not realistic or representative of all the waste she (and her business that transports condoms, among other goods across the United States in fancy "reusable" packaging, products that are no different from what you can buy near you with a far lower carbon footprint) produces, and the jar is simply a marketing tactic for said business.

This is all great, but remember that corporations are the main cause of waste in general! If you want to think about it based off of a ratio, for every mason jar of trash people produce, a major company produces on average seven jars worth of trash. Upstream waste in manufacturing is a huge problem no matter where you shop from. Hold companies accountable while doing what you can within your means! You don’t have to buy products from a company to start a zero waste journey. Don’t let trash jars and elitist attitudes within the community stop you from being more eco friendly. Anything helps:)

By reading some comments I'm really surprised by how harsh and mean some people can be. What Lauren Singer is doing is fantastic, and definitely not easy, because the society is designed in a way that is almost impossible to live a perfect "zero-waste" lifestyle for us commoners, but I see that she is really trying very hard to do her best. Instead of criticizing and being an annoying nitpicker ("your suppose to replace your menstrual cup so that's not true zero-waste blablabla"), why can't people just appreciate her and recognize her for this hard choice of lifestyle? Maybe her lifestyle is still far from being "perfectly zero-waste," but at least she lives by her values, in contrary to people who haven't even TRIED to live an eco life before open your mouth to criticize her. We need to encourage and support people like that, and also do our best to live by our values.

Wasn't this exposed a while ago? I mean, that's entirely impossible to have this little waste, What if she accidentally broke her phone? That wouldn't fit in a mason jar. She's only regulating and choosing what she puts in the jar. The real waste she's producing is seven more times than what she's showing you and the truth is that after she advertised her company, it became more apparent she's not really into this reducing lifestyle, she's just trying to buy into it, the best example might be the condom packs she sells at 5 dollars for three in a tin. Which is very little product to splurge on. And I Which is essential the same to every other drugstore condom but with fancy packing. How about the containers that hold these Tins? The shipping? She outright claims this is ALL her trash but is that really the case?
@amym7075
4 жыл бұрын
Maybe there's more trash she is producing but I think this isn't the point of the video. The point is she's making a conscious effort to try as much as possible to produce less waste. Even if she is producing more than she claims she is, she's still inspiring others to at least try. The takeaway is not about whether she is actually producing so little waste, but about the conscious effort to save the planet as much as possible. We don't need one person going waste free perfectly. We need the entire human population to do it imperfectly.
@Mahi-nw5vh

She's only outsourcing her waste and reducing her daily trash. Water, electricity, clothes, tools she uses, are impossible to produce without waste. She buys them and acts like 'zero waste' is a valid thing. She didn't even talk about medicines or the condoms until it was brought up.

What we need to talk about when it comes down to zero waste is the budget involved. I live in NM and I have little access to zero waste stores in my area, and if I can make it to one, the prices are incredibly high. Any eco friendly product is overpriced. I saw tampons that were just the cotton and no plastic yet they cost over 10$ more. You’d think less product would equal less in price? Eco companies are taking advantage of their consumers and as someone who doesn’t have money to throw away, I wish this wasn’t the case. :(

Myanameis Beestingz At the end of the year, I did a really intense cleanse with my family called "arise and shine" for a month highly recommended by a fellow raw fooder. After that I had bad constipation. I went to a few doctors and got my blood checked. I was anemic and constantly tired after that cleanse and a naturopath (in the Chinese tradition) decided I probably should start eating some meat. That cleanse knocked me and my family off the raw band wagon. We've tried several time to get back on over the years, but I find I manage best if I keep sugar very low, completely avoid alcohol (as I've discovered after a *really* bad candida flare up recently) eat heaps of fruits and vegetables (raw or not) and eat meat sparingly (one or two times a week).

Raw fruit based diets are not environmentally friendly. Fruit takes a lot of land and resources to grow, a huge portion of the fruit is discarded for imperfections, and the biggest kicker of all is the sheer amount of fossil fuel and carbon pollution that's created from shipping it out. Unless you're eating fruit that's grown at the source(IE you've moved to a tropical climate) the impact of fruit is really quite bad. Yes less packaging, but far more damaging than eating shelf stable legumes and grains that have less waste and easier transport.

But do bulk stores let you bring your own containers? How do they tare out the weight of the container if you purchase something that isn't in a container that they provide? I guess bags weigh 'nothing' but what about herbs in a glass jar? Do you pay for the weight of the jar or are there just some awesome bulk stores that let you do that?
