Hey just wanted to note that when you added the 3 additional quarter turns on the right spring, that it appears you did not loosen the torsion spring bolts enough as it turned the torsion bar. So when you were slowly releasing it that it undid the 3 quarter turns. If you go back and add those 3 quarter turns to the right side, it will be in better balance as it was still a little heavy at the end of the video. I’ve replaced my torsion spring a couple of times because we use our garage as our main door.

Good catch. I was really wondering why that wound back down. That might explain why the test did not result in the door staying half way open when he let go of it.

you winded your cable wrong unless your door is different setup ...you were supposed to winde it toward you not toward the wall

100% he set cables on the drum the wrong way. left side had red drum, right had black. cables should be dropping toward the wall like you said. good catch

Informative video. Thanks. One comment is to be careful about overtightening the set screws. Tighten until they contact the tube and then tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. That's a hollow tube and could be deformed by overtightening the screws.

Great job! One note a revolution would 360°, if you went 30 revolutions you would probably break the spring!

Great note! 30 x 1/4 turns. So like 7.5 revolutions.

Hey everyone! First off thank you for the video, it helped a bunch! You didnt mention (at least i didnt hear) to loosen the other spring prior to starting on the wheels. I was following along with the video and went to the wheel before going to the other side of the spring. Easy recovery but added a little more mystery and fear to the process! Thanks again for the video

How do you know what size spring to buy????
@MCFIXIT
2 жыл бұрын
I thought I mentioned that. It’s based on the spray paint color on the actual spring, you can see that mine is white. So you get that corresponding color. I’ve linked mine in the description to the actual one I bought. Great question, best of luck on your project!

If the size isn’t painted on the spring, you get the right spring by measuring 3 things: the spring gage, the inside diameter, and the length of the spring. In this case the 218 is the spring gage (the diameter of the spring wire in thousandths), 2 is the inside diameter, and 26 is the length of the spring (not including the end pieces). So 218x2x26 is painted on the spring at 14:42 on the video.

PS mine is lifting up at the midpoint. Do I have to loosen the spring tension?
@MCFIXIT

Yes, I’d do 2 or 3 turns loosening it. Test it again and maybe you are good or need to loosen it again. Best of luck!

Hi, I got a Amarr double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I followed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, lost of eleasticty, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you

Maybe they installed the wrong springs in 2015. Id be shocked if they were worn out. Did you hire someone to put it in originally? I’d reach out to them if so.

My garage torsion spring broke after 18+ years, so I ordered another spring using the SAME SIZE shown on the broken spring. Installed it on my 8ft door which requires 33 to 34 turns. I’m up to around 45 quarter turns and when I lift the door halfway it falls to the floor. I noticed that this new spring did not expand out as far as the previous spring. It’s about 3-eighth inch short of the indentation mark of the old spring. Should I do 33 quarter turns and tap spring to stretch it out to the old spot on the shaft?
@MCFIXIT

If that helps it stay up halfway well. Be careful and do a few turns at time to ensure it won't snap.

Things were going good loosened all the things we were supposed to when we went to take spring off bar it moved until it got to the thing it goes through and would not go through. Tried both sides. Can not get bar out of bracket. Any suggestions?😊

The thing that the bar goes through on each end. It acts like something clamps down on it when we get to the either end of the bar

Got same length torsion spring and followed the steps; but issue I see is garage door only lift up till 1 foot , stay stuck and does not move up regardless how much manual lift force I put in (in manual mode). please guide. I tried going up to 33 quarter turns (16.5 half turns) as 31 or 30 turns was not helping, rotation was clock wise for 33 quarter turns..

If only one side breaks do you have to replace both sides?
@MCFIXIT

Yes bc it’s only a matter of time before the other one breaks. And it’ll be a little more stretched out in than a new one. Replace both at once.

Got it thanks. Is there a way to open the garage door with one side broken just to get a car out?
