Well, I had bunion surgery by an orthopedic surgeon on both feet at the same time and spent the night in the hospital. My big toe bones had slowly rotated as I grew causing painful bunions, and the surgery corrected their alignment. I was in my late twenties when I decided to do something about it and opted for surgery. And let me tell you, that first week home from the hospital was paaainful! I returned to work after two weeks and wearing sneakers with a roomy toe box. I wore flats for a whole year, I didn’t want to ruin the surgery for high heels. My feet are now perfect and I have been pain free ever since for years!

@@isaacarl0s When you’re in your twenties you think you can do anything! Actually I couldn’t drive so my mother drove me back and forth to work and I had a desk job so I didn’t have to walk around. I was using crutches for about a month and then a cane always walking flat footed, shuffling along. Little by little I was walking normally, bending on my toes, with the cane. It took about a couple of months before I was walking normally on my own. I overdid using the crutches and the cane but I didn’t want to do anything to ruin my surgery. The results have been wonderful and ever since I can wear any kinds of shoes without pain and ruining the shoes because of bunions. I’m still careful about not wearing very high heels but health over fashion has been my motto for my feet ever since. Are you thinking about this kind of surgery?

I have Correct Toes that I wore for two years every day and I’m in my late 60s and for the first time that I can remember I have an arch and my bunion no longer hurts. I can also stand with my big toes straight for the first time in years. I’ve been flat footed since I was put in corrective shoes as a 6 year old. I have gout on one foot and neuromas (wore some flip flops for about 6 months straight and have hypermobile feet, which resulted in neuromas). The shoe inserts prescribed by a podiatrist in my late 50s just made matters worse and the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned (about 3 years ago) gave me a bunion on the other foot (the one without the gout). I wore those shoes for about 6 months straight and didn’t discover the problem until I switched to another pair of shoes come winter. This sent me on a search and I ended up with shoes with a wide toe box and zero rise (and I used glued in metatarsal support for two yeas and no longer need that) and Correct Toes. Even my neuromas are far less painful now that my arch supports my foot.

Women shoes in the US are narrower than other countries. The problem with wearing a US wide shoe is the heal is also wider which doesn’t leave a really good fit. UK shoes are normally wider and can give more toe room (but beware Clarks was bought by an American company and the shoes have gotten narrower to American standards). Japanese shoes such as Asics are made wider. A brand like Munro also can accommodate a wider foot. Easy Spirit makes reasonably priced shoes in W and WW. I hope other commenters can recommend brands.

An exercise that I've used to help my bunions is to place the heel of my other foot into the space between my great toe and my second toe. It's just the right amount of stretch. It's easiest to do when both feet are propped up, but can even be done while standing.

Thank you for this well timed video. Altra running shoes got me walking again after extreme pain in one foot under the heel & arch due to bunions/fallen arches/shredded ligament because of years of flat feet. All other footwear just pushed my big toes inwards & actually literally crippled me last year but Altra are foot shaped & so comfy. Zero drop was perfect for me from day one & my Rivera 2 Altras I wear every day. I do physio for my feet from the Internet & a physiotherapist I visited, wear big toe spacers in my shoes & am hoping to persuade my bunions to behave eventually! I have 3 pairs of the Altras & donated ALL my other footwear (Skechers & other so called 'sensible' trainers as I've never been able to wear smart shoes) to the community centre shop. I don't understand why manufacturers don't make shoes foot shaped as this is an important part of balance & I believe it's frequently responsible for older people falling as their feet become mis-shapen due to bad footwear.

I have switched to a wider toe box shoe and am SLOWLY transitioning into more of a barefoot tennis shoe. (Zero drop, wider toe box, flexible sole) I also use the correct toes inserts. HIGHLY recommend. I prefer with toe socks, but will do on barefoot and regular socks IF the socks stretch enough side to side. I’ve also been doing the massage and pulling the big toe sideways. My muscles on the top of my foot betwn the bones were initially very tender. I’ve done it enough now that it feels REALLY good! I also do the massage with my toes flexed and extended. Need to head now to the foot strengthening exercises, as my arch has collapsed somewhat over time.

I find the silicone spacers sometimes dig into the skin next to my little toe. I don't wear these if I'm out running errands or somewhere I can't remove them if they become irritating. Especially at first, wear them at home so you can take them off for a while without grossing out co-workers or people at the store. Gradually your feet will adjust to wearing them longer.

Think its important to include that Bunions or Hallux Valgus at its most severe is arthritic and will not be improved by addressing the muscle (Adductor Hallucis) as the deformity/damage is already done to the MTPJ. Management for this would be podiatric surgery though I hear outcomes arent always good for patients.

It's my understanding that the penultimate cause of bunions is the failure of the first metatarsal joint at its base (ie closer to the ankle). So if this joint isn't stabilized or fixed (and that's NOT the joint sticking out) none of the other suggestions are going to help. I wish videos like this addressed the underlying weakness of this joint.

Guys you are brilliant!! Thanks a bunch for the extremely useful information about the big toe related issue, I’ve known some of it before but not even half of that! I’m gonna try the exercises. As to the retractors like you showed here, I used some other kinds, softer ones which go only between the first two toes and they really work. I believe your option is as good as them too. I wish you could cover the heal part too in your further videos. I periodically feel pain (I do not wear flat shoes or high heels whatsoever) Thank you!!! Good luck and keep up the great job!!!

Glad to see this! I've had bunion issues for a long time, started (I believe) from getting en pointe in ballet too young an too often.

I have severe bunions. I think it has a lot to do with having flat feet and the way I walk. I’m not sure I can fix them without surgery, but I’ll give these a try.

What worked for me was getting firm arch supports to put in my shoes. I tried all the methods you show here and they did not work. The arch supports did because my feet were rotating inward which is what was causing the bunion in the first place.

What about bunionettes? Any help would be appreciated. They are painful too.

I add an arch support sleeve to prevent pronation which exacerbates the great toe moving laterally

If you catch it early a cotton ball between the first 2 toes is often enough. And customizable to the exact size needed.

Please say hi to Bob for me. Tell him how much I miss him and the 2 of you together. I'll try your recommendations as I have a bunion, hammer toe and capsulitis. Any suggestions for capsulitis?

Had a bunion as far back as I can remember. Have been wearing wide toe box shoes for at least 20 years. Will try the yoga toes along with the massage. Thanks

I have bunions and started wearing barefoot shoes about a year ago. I have tried the toe spacers and Correct Toes but these tend to cause me pain, sort of like a pinched nerve. So I quit using them. I do stretching and strengthening exercises including the short foot exercise for my feet which I find helpful. I also wear my barefoot shoes walking on uneven ground which helps strengthen them. I don't have any pain. The toe alignment has shown slight improvement, however my bunions are severe.

I also had issues with them pinching, and stopped wearing them eventually due to that, but I suspect that their sizing recommendation was a bit off, and that I should have gone with the size larger than what I got

@Danielle Nicole The softer gel type is definitely more comfortable to me but they still bother me after a short time.

Birkenstock shoes help align the leg correctly above the foot-- my arches have fallen which creates incorrect pressure on my bones causing bunion

As a woman who never wore high heels and only wore wide shoes, i have TERRIBLE bunions 😢 I think it’s genetic -is that possible? I was consulted for surgery since they cause significant pain daily. I have found crocs to be pretty good but have discomfort even with wide toe box shoes.

I grew up with bunions. They're very bad. My mother has them too, and she never wore high-heeled shoes either. I spent the majority of my life either wearing shoes that hurt my feet because they were too narrow if they were the correct length or if I got them wide enough, they'd fit like floppy clown shoes lengthwise. No available shoe is the right size for my feet. It's extremely difficult and frustrating!
