Well hell you went through the trouble to take it off. Why not put a new one on instead of putting an old one back in. And one more thing fan clutches can be bad in both stuck and unstuck. Sometimes they stay stuck engaged and others stay stuck open not engaged. Cool video anyway

At low RPM and vehicle speeds the fan clutch locks up to make the fan turn to compensate for the lack of airflow through the radiator such as stop and go traffic. As the vehicle speed and RPM picks up the clutch allows the fan to freewheel as airflow coming through the grill flows through the radiator cooling the fluid (Coolant) running through it. It is a centrifugal clutch much like the one on our old mini-bikes. Mercedes and BMW do use a Thermo-static design fan clutch and others have electric fan in addition. I am ASE certified. Temporary fix only, these, alike most modern parts are designed to fail and usually irreparable, then when you go for parts, find the replacement is 10 times the cost of an older cars (same) unit. Auto makers used these tricks to make aging cars economically irreparable, which i see as a criminal act.

It is criminal. For one, a vast waste of energy mining and shipping minerals and materials, smelting, refining, processing and then more shipping and more processing. Then assembly, more shipping, warehousing, shipping to local depots, sale then carried home. Then, within days, weeks, months or years, depending if it is a childs toy, an appliance, whitegoods or cars, respectively these same, expensive items are consigned to the trash, to create nightmare sized landfills, with little being recovered and recycled. Brilliant! When they talk about the human race now living off the equivalent of 5 plaqnets or somesuch notion, you can see this criminal abuse by corporations is the primary reason. But, some may say that we pay for what we get. This is not true: the criminality of the corporation is that, following the lead of GMoters etc, any given item is stripped down via material quality, design standards and durability but NOT in appearance: the item you buy looks fine, but was designed to break, wear out, or fail mysteriously (modern auto electrics). In other words, the modern corporation uses millions to develop crap, to make things cheaper to manufacture and shorter lifespan. People mistakenly think most corporations use money to improve their offering, some few still do but the others are indelibly stained by the criminal malfeasance.

That is what they call in the industry predetermined obsolescence The oldest light bulb still going has been burning for over 100 years and counting. The light bulb manufacturers got together after they found out that they were not getting repeat sales ever since then they have designed light bulbs to burn 24/7 for only 40 days. Predetermined Obsolescence!

How you fix one of these clutch fans is to take it off, throw it in the scrap bin, and replace it with a 4-6 blade old time solid fan and then forget about it.
@MasterChief-sl9ro
6 жыл бұрын
Not true. There are blind plugs under the ones that hold it to the fan. You have to drill them out. Then you can replace the fluid in them. After you flush it the old stuff out. If it leaks around the outer seal. Just reseal it. The inner seal can be pressed out. Once you press out the threaded holder with a puller. Just replace with the same part number on the seal.. As these things cost $100.00 new for a factory one.

Your supose to be able to stop it with you hand 😂😂there not supose to spin on a cold engine they only engage wen rad is hot it work then stop wen rad cools simple the design is so that the fan never spins at same speed of engine other wise you get a big roar first thing on a cold engine you should be able to free wheel it after 2 minits

That's called a thermostatical fan clutch. That spring on the front like you said heats up and coils up like a thermostat in the motor and locks the fan in. The other types are centrifical which spins with the engine rpms on centrifical force, the faster the engine spins the more the fan locks in. The other type is a solid fan type that spins the same as engine rpms at all times. Then for most big trucks, they use air controlled fans and those spin up when the engine reaches a certain temp.

I thought the fan is supposed to free wheel when its cold and lock up when its hot? Isn't this how it works, so less air is drawn in when cold and more air drawn in when hot?
@bam6972
10 жыл бұрын
YES! that's exactly how it works. but when its cold and you free wheel it by hand its supposed to have at least some resistance. like with one good spin it will travel about one and a half turns before it stops is a good estimate. a little after that is good. but if it turns like 5 turns before it stops then its time for a new fan clutch....
@aussikiwi

bam6972 Ok, thanks for that. In fact, when mine is stone cold with the engine off and I try to spin the fan, I can barely get a quarter of a turn out of it. The valve working again does you no good if all the fluid has leaked out. You can peel them apart, fill them about half way with fluid again, and then re-seal everything and it should work fine again, as long as your "valve moves/ like you said/ and the bearing isn't locked up.

What is the white stuff in the fins? I just bought a new old stock fan clutch and it had some grey and white stuff about 2 inches long on the edge and on 4 or 5 fins. Looked sorta like dry toothpaste. I don’t know if it’s oxidation or it leaked a little where it pressed on in the box and dried. It seems to be good still but haven’t installed yet.

ok, i think this may be my problem on my 04 4x4 suburban. when im driving at any speed if I "remove my foot from pedal" when coasting there is a spinning whirring sound from engine, but when I "press pedal with gas" the sound goes away? I tried something when I was coasting at any speed, I put the car in neutral and the sound is still there, it only goes away when I press on the pedal, WEIRD!? Gonna try this fix. Thank you and let me know what you think on my engine issue.
@bam6972
8 жыл бұрын
+m00nchildblues it sounds like the fan is doing its job actually. idling when hot it turns the most and when you hit the gas it will actually kinda free wheel. so you might here a roaring sound at a stop and not when you get going again. that's normal. but if the roaring gets louder when you hit the gas then the valve is stuck in the open position and locking the fan up permanently.

All fans make noise at start up. As that is normal when you are stopped and have the AC on..Till it gets warmed up or you start moving.. It tells you it's working. As it takes time for the fluid to disengage the fan. It works just like a transmission. The thermo coil is what controls the opening and closing of the valve.
