hi Judi, thanx for the video. My sauerkraut turned out too salty, should I rinse it with water or what do u suggest? Thanx 😊
@JudiintheKitchen
Жыл бұрын
Hmmmm...this is a dilemma, for sure! There are several options that could help. To me, the best way to remedy the situation would be to add more vegetables (cabbage if it's plain sauerkraut), and more water if needed to make sure all the vegetables are covered. Seal the jar, then allow it to ferment a couple days more, then taste it. You may need to transfer everything to a larger container to do what I suggested, but I think this is the best way to remedy the situation. Another option would be to drain off AND RESERVE the liquid, then rinse the cabbage/vegetables in fresh water. Then return the vegetables to the brine and allow it to sit a day, then taste. This may or may not fix the problem. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and asking. Best wishes to you in your endeavors!

Just bought 2 lbs of roasted sunflower kernels that are too salty for me. What would be a good (and not too complicated) way to remove some of the salt?
@JudiintheKitchen
2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Now, that's a tough one. How about getting more roasted sunflower seeds that are unsalted and mix the two batches together? Mix them well so the salt will be disbursed among all the kernels. Yes, some may still taste extra salty, but when mixed with the unsalted ones, the flavors may balance out. Another alternative may be to rinse them off with plain water, spread them out on a tray and putting them in the oven at low temperature to dry them back out. I hope this helps! Hi Judy, I tried baking for the first time and the bread turned out nice and soft. But it is too salty. Is there any way to deal with a salty bread? Thanks in advance.
@JudiintheKitchen
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Siva Kiran! Oh my...that's a dilemma. At least now you know you need to adjust the recipe by reducing the salt, when making future loaves. For the bread you have...how about topping it with something that may usually have some salt in it, but use the "no salt added" version instead. Examples: unsalted butter, no salt added nut butter, or a no salt/low salt margarine or cheese. Also, a fruit jam or apple butter may help (which would normally be unsalted, but the sweetness may counteract the saltiness). Cream cheese and jam may also be another option. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and sharing :)

We purchased super salty walnuts. What can be done with them?
@JudiintheKitchen
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen! Thanks for watching and asking your question. The only thing I can think to do with the salty walnuts is to put them in a strainer and give them a quick rinse (so you don't wash off all the salt...just some of it). Drain them, then spread them out on a baking sheet and put them in a warm oven until they dry back out. Try 250 to 300F on the oven. Not overly hot or they will roast a second time and that may be too much. Just watch them so they don't burn, and when they are obviously dry, remove the tray and allow the nuts to cool before returning them to their container (or another covered container if necessary). I hope this helps!

That's a tough one. There's not much you can do at this point to take that salt out other than soak them and that's not appetizing. You could make more fries without any added salt and serve them together with the salty ones. Or possibly make some type of a dip (like a homemade ketchup) and leave all salt out of the dip, which might help to balance the flavors. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)

@@JudiintheKitchen thanks judi for your tips! Is it crazy to think about washing the salt off and sun or bake the chips dry?
@JudiintheKitchen

@@p6h14 Why not give that a try? Seems do-able to me. I would try it with just a few chips at first to see if it works. If they're real potato slices that were fried or baked, they should hold up. If they were compressed from grated potatoes (like Pringles), then they would fall apart. I'd try a LIGHT sprinkling of water, lay them out on a tray and bake in oven or dry in dehydrator. What oven temp? One can only guess...I've never done this before. I'd guess at 350F or lower. If you do this, please let us know the results! It's a great experiment and well worth sharing :)

@JudiintheKitchen
3 жыл бұрын
You could try that, Gracie. However, with that much extra salt, it may take a lot of doctoring to fix the batter. The more other ingredients you add, the more you will dilute the salt, so it should eventually work. Could I dump the soup in a strainer and rinse off the chicken,rice,veg ?
@JudiintheKitchen
Жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I don't think that would fix the problem because there would still be a lot of excess salt in the soup broth. The best way I know of for reducing the excess salt in soup is to add more water or broth makings, but without anything salty added. ie, if you make your own vegetable broth and have some extra available, you could add that. If you need to just add more water, then you'll need to adjust your seasonings other than the salt. That's really the best way to do it if you don't have salt-free broth available. If there's a store nearby, maybe they would have salt-free broth? Maybe, and maybe not. If you elect to add more water and seasonings, when all is said and done, you could remove some of the extra broth and freeze it for later use. That's the best option in my opinion. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and best wishes to you :)

Hi Sharon! How about boiling it in some plain water first, then tossing out the water (which should have a lot of the salt in it). Then use the sausage as you normally would (probably with less cooking time). You MIGHT be able to soak it first instead of actually boiling it ahead of using it in your recipe. I would do that in the refrigerator. However, since I haven't tried this, I'm not sure if soaking the sausage would alter the texture of it. It might, so I would only experiment with a very small piece first just to test it out. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you find a way to reduce the salt that works for you. @@JudiintheKitchen have you ever tried any of these tips on spam? And if you have which ones work the best? And thank you for the helpful video and advice.
@JudiintheKitchen
2 жыл бұрын
@@SW-ii5gg Hi SW! No, I have not eaten spam for many, MANY years, but I do remember that it is salty. Which tactic you use to get the saltiness out may depend on how you intend to prepare it. If you're going to heat it up, you could try cooking it briefly in plain water first. That will leach out some of the salt. Then you could move forward and prepare it as you prefer. Even if you plan to make it into a sandwich, precooking it briefly in plain water could still help since the water will leach salt out of it. Afterwards, refrigerate it if you want it cold before using it. With spam, soaking it or heating it in plain water would probably be the easiest thing to do and would allow you to still use it however you prefer. Thanks for watching and asking! Hi Judi, I marinate chicken thighs in a red hot pepper sauce (super spicy ) and bake it. The pepper sauce is too salty (not too spicy). I was wondering if very thinly sliced celery and zucchini (high water content) would work to dilute the spicy hot pepper sauce without totally altering the taste of the dish. Any suggestions? Thank you and have a very happy and healthy New Year.
@JudiintheKitchen
2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Anything is worth a try. However, I hesitate to think the celery would reduce saltiness because celery naturally has a lot of sodium in it. In fact, I've made salt-free salad dressings using celery as a salt substitute and they tasted great. So, the zucchini may dilute the saltiness, but personally, I would not use celery. Potatoes are also known to help dilute saltiness, so you might even try adding some potato slices to the mix. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and for your well wishes! @JudiintheKitchen
3 жыл бұрын
You do have a dilemma! The cheese and bacon only add to the saltiness. The first thing that comes to my mind is making more sauce without anything salty in it and combining the two. Of course, then that may involve your reheating leftovers, which you don't like. Consider, dividing the already made sauce in half and making another half without any salty ingredients, then mixing the two. Discard the unused half so you don't have to bother with the leftovers, if that's your preference. I hope this helps!

Hi Samantha! Thanks for watching and asking. I'm not quite sure what you're referring to. If they were cooked in a stew with vegetables and other ingredients, then adding more liquid and spices (minus the salt) should dilute it. In that case, you may also need to add more veggies too to balance things out. I hope this helps! Take care :)

Unfortunately I oversalted my bread. It's already baked now. What can I do to save it? Should I throw it away?
@JudiintheKitchen
4 жыл бұрын
Before throwing it away, try anything first. How about serving it with a savory topping of some type, only leave the salt out. Garlic bread is an example. Many times we top bread with butter, garlic salt and a little sprinkling of parsley for color. In this case, you could top it with unsalted butter, garlic powder (not garlic salt), and a dash of dried parsley if desired. That might balance it out. Or perhaps a dip/spread like hummus, only leave any salty ingredient out of the hummus and serve it on the bread. Or perhaps spread it with unsalted nut butter of choice. Or maybe some type of cream cheese based savory topping, only leave the salt out. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and asking!

Hello. I just made cookies and after I baked them, I tasted one and it's too salty. Can you give me any advice on this? How can I save those cookies because I do not want to throw them away?
@JudiintheKitchen
3 жыл бұрын
Hi John! That's a tough one. Since you can't change the cookies themselves at this point, the best way to salvage them is to serve them with something to balance out the flavor. Usually something sweet would help to cut the salty flavor. (And remember, if you make whatever it is to go with the cookies, leave the salt out of the recipe!) Ice cream, yogurt, caramel sauce, chocolate dip, top them with a sugary frosting or glaze...anything along those lines should help to counteract the salty flavor. I hope this helps! Best wishes to you and yours for a safe, happy and healthy 2021 :)

What about presalting pot roast in a crock pot. Is there a way you could recommend to counter act it?,
@JudiintheKitchen
9 ай бұрын
I'm not quite sure what you're asking. You could always add your seasonings to a pot roast up front before starting to cook it. The point of the video is ways to combat too much salt once it has been already added to a food and it can't be taken out. The best way to solve the problem at that point is simply to dilute the extra salt or seasoning with more liquid or sauce, minus the seasoning that was too much in the original sauce/liquid. If the salt was added to a pot roast before any liquid, it may be possible to use a spoon and scrape it off the meat or to scoop out the extra salt. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)

Hi Irene, There are several things you can do to help a salty soup. Some people have found that adding a chopped potato helps. Also, the chicken was pan fried before, does deep frying it and coat it with flour will make a difference? What should i do?
@JudiintheKitchen

Hi Fathur, You have a dilemma, for sure. Soaking the chicken BEFORE it was cooked would have fixed the problem. But since it's been pan fried, soaking it in water may fix the problem, but it also may make it very undesirable to eat. What about preparing a sauce of some type to serve on the chicken. A milk-based sauce may help, but whatever you do, don't add ANY salt whatsoever to the sauce. And I wouldn't use salty ingredients like soy sauce or something like that, since it would add yet more salt to the dish. Even a pan gravy would help, but again, don't add any salt or salty ingredients. Serve it over the chicken, and hopefully the two flavors would balance out, especially if the sauce normally has something salty in it. I DO hope this helps. Thanks for watching and sharing. Best wishes :)

Hi Judi,How are u....🌹How to tone down garlic taste?
@JudiintheKitchen
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam! Thanks for watching and commenting! Toning down garlic...now that's a great subject for yet another video!! Try any of these tactics that you think would work best in your dish (they will not all be appropriate for all dishes)... (1) Dilute the garlic by adding more of the other ingredients to the dish, or (2) Add something creamy to counterbalance the garlic flavor...cheese, milk (dairy or nondairy), or (3) Sweeten the dish just a little something sweet (not enough to give it a sweet flavor), or (4) add a potato to the dish and allow it to cook long enough for the potato to be tender, or (5) add a LITTLE acid like vinegar, lemon, or lime juice, or (6) add an herb to counteract the garlic...cilantro, parsley, or basil...something like that if it's appropriate for the dish. Above all, the first option would be my first choice. Yes, you may end up with a lot more food than what you originally intended, but the flavor should be right for whatever dish it is, and extra can be saved for leftovers and/or frozen, if possible. I hope this helps! Take care :)

Hi Little Marissa! Since I don't know exactly what type of soup you made, I can only give general help. It will be up to you to decide which would work best in your particular soup. Can you add some milk and make it a cream-based soup? That may help. Or, can you add a little sugar to counteract the salty flavor? Do you have one potato available? (Even if it's frozen or dehydrated potatoes) Adding a potato can help to cut the saltiness. Or, if those won't work, how about adding a bit of an acid, such as lemon juice or vinegar? NOT a lot...just a little, like a tablespoon at a time, taste, then go from there. I hope something on this list will work for you. Thank you for watching and asking :)

Hi Safaa! Most of my "fixes" apply to liquidy foods, so I'm not sure if I can help. But we'll try. Are the scones already baked?
@JudiintheKitchen

If the scones are already baked, there's not much you can do other than serve them with something to offset the salt. You could soak them in a liquid, like milk and make a type of pudding out of them. That might offset the salt when eaten together. Or perhaps serve them with some type of sweet topping (of course with no added salt), and that might offset the extra salt. Or top them with ice cream or cashew cream (no added salt!) and some fresh fruit. These are just suggestions and I can't guarantee they will offset the added salt without knowing just how much extra salt was added to the batch, but hopefully this will help. If you baked a test scone and the rest of the batter is not baked, you could double the batter, adding a second round of all the ingredients except the salt. Mix in the second round of ingredients with the first and bake a big amount of scones. If doing the later (increasing the recipe), you could also add a little extra sweetener to the mixture to offset the salt. I do hope this helps! Thanks for asking. Best wishes :)

Hello! Now THAT'S an interesting dilemma and one I had not heard of before. Yes, making French toast with the bread sounds like a great idea! Maybe also use it in some type of sandwich with ingredients that go well with a little extra salt flavor. Or how about cutting some into cubes and drying them in the oven to make salad croutons? Or perhaps crumble it up in a food processor, add some herbs (and NO salt), and make seasoned bread crumbs out of it. Sometimes people will make garlic bread by sprinkling some garlic salt (along with butter or a little oil) on the bread, then toast the bread in the oven. You could make garlic bread with it by using garlic powder instead of garlic salt (or better yet, rub the bread with a freshly cut garlic clove along with your butter or oil, then toast it). These are what ideas came to my mind over this situation. I hope something here helps! If nothing else, serve up that French toast! Thanks for watching and sharing your situation. Blessings to you and yours :)

Hi Michelle! The question is...does it taste too salty when eaten with the pasta? If so, I know you added milk. Try adding heavy cream, since it's richer than milk, it won't make it more watery. If it's a bit watery, you could cook a potato, mash it and add it to the sauce. That's a PLAIN potato, no added salt, boiled and mashed. That would keep the sauce creamy and would soak up some of the added salt. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)

Fish jerky that's too salty? Hmmmm. Since that's a dried food that's usually eaten alone, there may not be a lot of hope other than to wet it down/soak it to get some of the salt out then re-dry it. That doesn't sound ideal, but it may be the only way to get the salt out. Other than that, perhaps soak it to rehydrate it in some type of salt-free sauce. Then serve the two together. The salt in the jerky would help to flavor the sauce and the two would balance each other out. Thanks for watching and sharing! I hope this helps. :)
