We had a GFCI in the kitchen that has worked for years and suddenly the other night, it tripped without tripping the breaker. Hubby has been working on this for 2 days trying to figure out what happened and trying to fix it. He even picked up a new GFCI with a light to show power and still couldn't get it to work (even when showing power to it). He always gets pissed when I show up and fix a problem that he is having with something little or simple (like switching the wires). I asked if he had the wires switched and he just gave me that look and proceeded to tell me how he matched white to white and hot to hot. After dinner, I watched this video while he was busy with another project, I opened it up and took a look. Ours is a beginning of run of circuit outlet with in and out wires. I watched this video and sure enough, it matters. I switched the hot from top to bottom and bottom to top. Flipped the breaker on and sure enough, we now had power. He hates when I am right, but I had to show him that it worked. When I explained what I had done, he asked how I fixed it and explained that he didn't think it mattered. Thanks for the video showing how important it is even after years of it working before, though I don't know how it was wired before because I didn't remove it. Thanks again!!! Great video!!!

Great video! I ran into an issue where the light on the GFCI was green, but no power. Was scratching my head, so pulled the old one out of the garbage to give it another look. Realized the Load and Line where opposite on the new one vs. the old (who’d a thought). Switched them and it worked. Just something to take into consideration as well when switching out a GFCI.

New gfi has line and load flip flopped like you said. Caught it after I hooked it all up same as old one. Green light. No power in outlet. Thought maybe I fried it. Because I reversed the load and line and still nothing. Put another one in. I reversed the black wires this time. It's a duplex with 2 black, 2 white, and a ground. I reversed the black, I still get the green light but no power. I test the load coming in at 120 with a multimeter which tells me wires and breaker are still ok. Should I have flip flopped the white wires too? Update. I swapped the white wires too and booya. It resets and works.. Thanks for the video!

15+ year old GFI 15A , Power just goes off, but DOESNT trip the GFI. No one has touched this outlet for over 15 years and it always worked before. If all lines are installed properly, would this need to be replaced to fix? What is the life of a GFI outlet (bathroom, used every day)?

I recently had an outdoor GFCI trip during rain and it wouldn't reset (even after I determined how to re-establish power). KZitem told me to check other GFCI's in the house, and I found a tripped culprit 100 feet away next to an upstairs sink. 1. Does this mean that an electrician had to run special wiring between the two outlets? (The outdoor outlet was installed 30 years after the house was built, and this incident is when I found out that there was no breaker-box switch for that outlet. Frustrating!) 2. I had a normal outlet on-hand and replaced the GFCI and weatherproofed it. Will it work? Thanx!

How do you tell if a GFCI is going bad. E.g. tripping too readily?

Maybe but no real good way that I know of. When it's bad you will know it

I tested some old night lights at my GFCI outlet in my bathroom. Two of the lights flashed on for a second and then died and now the outlet won’t work at all. I tried resetting it several times. I tried using different appliances to see if they would work from that outlet. They wouldn’t. I turned off the breaker switch. Waited, and then turned it back on. Everything else on that circuit still gets power. I checked to see if two other GFCI‘s are still working and they are. I reset them to see if that did anything. It didn’t. Did I just kill my GFCI and do I need to replace it? I put them in in 2004. Thank you.

Can I connect a Switch to a cgfi and how. I have tried to do so but after connecting my line from the Switch before installing the Switch I test the open line and it trips the cgfi immediately but cgfi will reset

If you have open ground with a ground attached then chances are that your ground doesn't go back to the panel or it's broken between the Recep and the panel. Hope that helps you out

My luck is that I only wanted to replace an older ivory GFCI with a white one (different brand) and I matched the wiring indicators exactly (it's a pass-through, so 2-black line, 2-white neutral) and it doesn't work correctly. Neither the GFI itself nor the other outlets work. I re-installed the old ivory one until I can figure this out. Grrrrrr......... No doubt something obvious I'm missing.

hi there I have a GFCI outlet in my old fifth wheel bathroom end it also has a light switch next to it which powers the four or five lightbulbs above the mirror now when I plug in some thing that doesn't take much power into that plug in power is it like a work light but when I plug in a shop vac it doesn't power enough very low power barely gets it running also if I have something plugged into it and then flip the light switch on it will shut off power to that outlet and one more thing the outlets down the trailer on the same side it if I plug something into them in power it on it will make the lights above the mirrorGo on and off slowly without the switch being turned on any ideas? I'm thinking I'm going to replace that outlet and see if that makes a difference

I'm gonna guess maybe you have a loose connection. Did you take it apart and see if you had a wire broken or loose?

@@MountaineerOutdoors i did ! i took it apart and im not sure if it was broken or if it broke when i took the oulet out but it was the bottom right white wire but the outlet was and still is upside down. so top left white / positive i believe hah. still learning outlets. but it does the exact same thing with the nrw GFCI outiet and wired just as it was. whites on the one side blacks on the other and the groud. it looks like it all was original tight wiring and original looking outlet. im not sure what to check next. the outlets on the other side of rv work normal. your thinking loose connection somewhere? ill have ti go through more. could the switch have anything to do with it ? thanks for responding.
@MountaineerOutdoors

It very well could be the switch. If it's just one side it definitely could be a loose wire do you have full voltage at the receptacle 120?

@@MountaineerOutdoors more insight to it is that on this same side of the fifth wheel in the closet. a outlet was missing. wires capped off and down the line from there the outlet inside by the door had no power along with the one on the outside of the trailer. i figured out the putting a oulet in the closet connected and shot power down the line to those outlets that now work but cause the lights above the mirror in the bathroom to buzz on and iff when using them haha very creepy so i took mote of a look and the outlet wires connections behind the closet are wire nutted and taped. seems original. i gave a quick look to see if connections are good. but not detailed. i bettrr check them more closely. the switch in the bathroom and the outlet are in the wall and tight and just go to the main white outlet loom and looks original any ideas or questions appreciated ! i need to get this taken care of i spent awhile putting that new outlet and same thing. was a pain. very tight in the corner under the mirror.

@@MountaineerOutdoors i havnt checked the voltage. the outlet will power a light or something small power but a shop vac it barely gets going and turns the lights on above i believe. also when the switch is turned on it powers off power to the outlet. i will pull the switch next and replace it with another and check the wiring which looked tight other then that i will get my multi meter out and check the voltage next

Dunno but when I was a green helper and I was told to get it out of the van I was like sure ill be right back..I left to go to the gas station. When I came back my journeyman said where the hell were you ...I told him that when I went to get the monkey out of the van 3 gorillas threw me into the van and demanded I take them to the local strip club...needless to say I thought they were messing with me which they were not.. One other guy later asked me to get a sky hook I said you sure you want me to go looking for that...my journeyman said if you send him for it we may be walking home today... so I dont know why but I agree some items have weird names,

Question. We have a gfci outlet that we installed following what was there before. The outlet worked when tested but my wife hit the test button and now it doesnt work. Cant reset it. And now 2 other outlets arent working. There are 4 wires attached not 2. 2 black on one side and 2 white on the other. I un-installed it and put in a regular outlet and now all 3 outlets work again but no gfci outlet now. Really weird
