I need to know how to fix a refrigerator water dispenser leak.
Turning off water to the fridge is a good start.
That’s not good enough.
Making sure the water dispenser device is in the off position, instead of pushed back in another.
It is not that simple.
If the latch itself is stuck due to rust, you could stop the water coming out by putting it back in position, though rust that holds it back will make it hard to move.
If it is stuck not quite off, I need to turn off the water until the water dispenser controls are fixed.
You could also have a broken switch that lets a little leak.
If the switch was stuck all the way on, it wouldn’t be a leak, it would be a flood.
The seal in the water dispenser could be warped or degraded. Then it lets some water leak through even though it is off.
That’s fixed by replacing the seal.
Water dispensers can drip for other reasons. For example, if you have air in the system, it will drip for a while.
This is not new.
If someone turned off water to replace the ice maker and then reconnected it all, it has some air in it until it runs for a while, and then it drips for a bit.
It drips anyway.
When was the last time you replaced the water filter?
What water filter?
The water filter that filters the water that goes to the dispenser.
I think there’s a light that says it needs to be changed.
If the water filter above the dispenser needs to be replaced, it gets clogged and can’t provide a full flow of water to the unit.
That often prevents it from dispensing water at all.
The clog also acts as a sponge, and then the water drips down after you’ve used it.
Everything that didn’t come out earlier.
Then there’s the question about what water filter you used, since an off brand water filter that doesn’t fit or correct one put in wrong will cause it to leak a little.
We only use the filters from the manufacturer.
So try replacing the water filter and seeing if that fixes the dripping you think is a leak.
The light for the water filter needing to be changed isn’t on.
I’m assuming you’re assuming someone didn’t just hit it to make it go away. Sometimes the water dispenser seems to leak because there is ice residue in the chute.
That would be obvious if I saw it there.
You’ll also get dripping if there is ice build up in the chute that melts when you dispense water or ice, as it is exposed to air.
I can’t do much more than use the water dispenser more to clear the ice.
Or you need to defrost the freezer so the ice buildup from the freezer isn’t coming out this outlet.
So you think the water dispenser leak is a sign there’s too much ice building up in the freezer.
Or excess ice build up melting and thawing and collecting in the ice dispenser that drips out the water dispenser.
All else fails, we’re down to replace ice maker and water dispenser and hope it all works.
