Nicely done Mike. I've just cut, split and now roughing out my first bow and pretty sure it's persimmon. I'd love to send you some pics of the stave to see if it's worth my time to use as a first piece. Please get back to me. Thanks much.

Casey Weed My pleasure, thanks for watching. just be careful when heating a laminated bow so the glue up doesn't loosen. Unlike when shaping a bow, you don't need a lot of heat to fix twist.

Thank you for this video! Can I use heat if my limbs have fiberglass on them? I have a pretty bad twist on a top limb.

Maricel Jiménez I have corrected twist in laminated fiberglass limbs by running the limb under hot tap water, then correcting the twist with my hands as someone switches the hot water to cold. REALLY Easy and permanent fix for fiberglass. I think I have a video of the process somewhere in my uploads.

Thanks Mike! This vid was super helpful. (like all of your vids) Question though... Will the oil applied for removing the twist affect the finish/staining later on? I mean will all that oil fully evaporate? Thanks again Mike!

I wipe the entire bow down with denatured alcohol (a lot of it) which is an excellent degreaser before staining/sealing. So far haven't had an ill effect from the oil.

my grandpa pasted a few years ago and he passed on his bear Kodiak mag to my dad. we had it for years and we are finally doing something with it.. but a neighbor offered that he would give us one of his recurve bows for free. he kept saying it was a grizzly and it was the same exact Kodiak mag that we have now and we are pumped about it. but it has a major limb twist. what do you we do?

we got 2 very expensive bows for free. how lucky is that. there both in really good condition besides for the twist

Very easy fix in this case. The Bear recurves do have a tendency toward twist when not stored properly, but the good news is that most of the Bear bows still around are backed and bellied with fiberglass. Here's the cool thing, all you need to fix the twist is hot water from the tap. The way to go is to set the tap water to as hot as you can stand it (too much for your skin is too much for the bow). Look down the bow when strung and unstrung and determine where the twist is. Next, with the bow unstrung, set the area where the twist begins under the running hot water. After about a minute hold the end of your bow with one hand and twist the limb in the correction direction. The bow will get more and more pliable as it heats up, so go slowly. You will need to go past the point of correction and hold it there, but be careful and don't over do it. After about a minute or so and while still holding the bow in the correction, have someone switch the running water from hot to cold. Hold under the cold water for a minute and then slowly let off on the correction twist. The limb should retain a good portion of the correction. Check the new alignment. If it needs more or you went too far, make another correction using the same process. If it looks good then put it back under the cold water until the limb is as cold as the water. Remove and wait about 20 minutes to let the bow "rest" then string it up and check to see if it is still in line when strung. It should be, but if not you may need to over correct the twist in an unstrung bow to get it perfect in a strung bow. Note: this works with fiberglass encased bows even if they have wood cores. If it is an all wood bow do not use this method as the wood will absorb the water and not react properly.

Thanks For these Tips. I have a beautiful early Wing Red Wing hunter but it has some Limb twist on both...likely former owners were step thru addicts when stringing. I've tried to correct by just using my hand pressure and it shoot okay, strings stay in groves but looking down you can see the tips are pointing away from center. I'm try your hot water method!

+BoarriorBows Hello mike I'm making my first bow out of black locust, it's been seasoned for 3 years. I was wanting to know if I should use this process to remove the twists before or after recurving
@BoarriorBows
9 жыл бұрын
Great question! How are you planning on creating the recurves. I ask because whenever you bend wood with heat, let it cool and then heat it again the wood can want to go back to its original shape. My way of doing things is to do both the recurving and straightening at the same time using this same procedure; otherwise it never seems to get quite right. If you are steaming the wood, then maybe using a jig or other form while in the steam box will assist in keeping the shape you desire as it steams.

Thank you for the reply. I was going to use heat and a jig to do the recurving. I seen another of your videos where you made one with a deflex by the handle and reflex in the limbs. I was thinking of something like that. I'm still early in the process, still working the back to one growth ring. Then to the floor tillering. Would it be better to do the recurving when the bow is done or close to done with the tillering process?

I would do it before so I had a nice straight piece of wood to work my recurves in. If you recurve first its no big deal, just more work IMO

Can I do this with a laminate longbow?
@BoarriorBows
4 жыл бұрын
heatgun can be too hot which could loosen the glue and possibly causes delamination. best way I've found with laminated bows is to just use alternating hot and cold water from the tap and manually adjust by hand. run hot water from tap over area of twist, then manually twist to correct while switching to cold water. hot water makes it pliable and cold water sets the new position. takes a few tries but generally does the job.

A trick I came across just messing around: I have a piece of string hanging from whatever weight you're using, have the string about a half inch off the ground(depending on how much twist you're correcting). Then you're basically done when the string is hanging limp along the floor.
