I was doing series/Split/Parallel switch on a Seymour Duncan Humbucker(SSH strat) so I flipped Black/Green and also Red/White wire. Now the 4th position is no longer weak and thin, it's loud and clear as it should be! Thank you for the video instruction 😀

Hi. I've got a question. Seems my middle pickup was out of phase and on position 2(hambucker+ middle single coil) it sounded crunchy with highs. But a guy resoldered my guitar pickups and the special out of phase sound on position 2 was lost What should I do to regain the out of phase sound on position 2?

I had out of town music store work on my HSS Stratocaster (Select series), after I gotta it back, the middle and neck pickups sounded weak and thin while the bridge pickup sounds muddy, the work was done out of town and it's next to impossible to get back to this so-called music store, can anybody take a guess as to what is going on? I lifted the pickguard and all the wire connections look good, I'm going to change the pickup selector just because it's been used a lot, but then again if somebody has any information as to help me assess this problem I really would appreciate it 👍

I have a question. I have an Ibanez with 2 Humbuckers and i want to rotate the neck pickup because i want the White coil to be closest to the neck because I think it looks better. The thing is that when I choose position 4 on the 5 way switch now the outer coil of the neck pickup is active together with the bridge pickup. I still want the inner coils to be the active ones in position 4. I found a forum that said: "The correct wiring should be replacing the North START with South END and North END with South START." So that will change which coil that will be active? but they will be out of phase so i need to change the phase of the bridge pickup?
@MadHatterGuitarProducts
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can reverse phase both pickups to change which coils are active. However, when you reverse phase the bridge pickup to match the phase of the neck you will also change which coil of the bridge pickup is active in position 2. The best way to resolve is don't change the phase. Instead, in position 4 on the switch have the Neck Pickup coil Finish leads connect to the pickup hot lead, typically the North Start, instead of ground. You'll need to do some rewiring at the switch.

This video was almost perfect. It missed the part where the strings were put back on and it was proved that the pickups were back in phase with the same exact demonstration as the start of the video but with the swapped wires. I would have preferred to see that.

I've got a strat that I put in 3 Seymour Duncan single coil sized humbuckers and my middle pickup sounds very thin with significant volume loss. The bridge sounds fine as well as the neck. The 2 and 4 position on the switch basically sounds like they're still in position 1 and 5, bridge and neck. What would be recommended?

Does this basically reverse the current direction in the humbucker coils? I just installed a new 5-way switch in my HSS Strat and position 2 on the switch definitely sounds too thin and just totally un-useable! So I think I need to swap where the Start wires of the coils are soldered, right?

im so mad, i just bought a seymour duncan ssl 1 for my neck, and was gonna leave the two stock squier pickups for now, and when i instaleld it i had the same problem the neck and middle were out of phase cause SD pickups are wound the old way apparently and i didnt read alot about the pickups to know that i had to get a RWRP from seymour duncan to make it work as a normal fender pickup caus they are reversed, i read on the manual that switching the hot and ground will put it in phase and it did work, but for some reason the neck and middle arent hum cancelling, so now i either have to buy another ssl 1 that is RWRP for the middle unless theres a way to make it work
@rickfrost5594

You should be able to take the hot and reverse it with the wire soldered with the ground wire and that will fix the phasing issue.
@stevenarseneault1972

It's possible that both single coils were wired backwards. Also makingnit out of phase with the humbucker.

I think the issue just arises because there isn’t a standard way the magnets are directed when making pickups. If the first magnet is North/South then the next has to be the opposite and so on and so forth. So the pickups have to be designed together to avoid this. The easy workaround though in this case is just swapping the hot and ground leads from the humbucker which reverses the way the power goes through the magnets and removes the hum and puts the signal back in the correct orientation to get your in/out of phase corrected. So easiest way to fix it is what is shown here. He could also flip the humbucker which would be odd, or flip the two single coils around or rewire 2 pickups instead of one. 🤷🏽♂️

@Mad Hatter Guitar Products. Okay, you're working with a Humbucker Pickup. Now when you have a set of 3-Single Coil Pickup's. So I am under the impression that if you have 2-North Up & 1-South Up, would that mean I should but the South Up in the Middle Position, or what.... Okay, I have 3- 1970's Strat's I'll be getting ready. I was able to get 3-1978 Pickups, which all are ''North Up''. I have 4 other Picks, also from the late 60's & early 70's. 3 of the 4 are also ''North Up''. So for 2 of the 3 Strat's, I have a set of good working Pickups all in the same Phase. Now the 3 I bought from a big seller on eBay. Those 3 ''TexMex'' Strat Pickups are out of Phase. The Neck & Mid are ''South Up'' & the Bridge Pickup is ''North Up.'' Those I should probably send back for a refund, since I figured that they all would either be ''South Up'', or ''North Up.'' Thanks for posting a great video.....
@MadHatterGuitarProducts

Monty Daniels Yes with singles it’s the same. Just reverse the leads on one. If you have a set of singles and you want the middle to be RWRP the polarity of the middle will be reverse of the others. Most manufacturers have the neck and bridge South up and the middle North up. However, it can be opposite. With the middle in reverse polarity you would then wire in reverse of the other pickups. Most manufacturers already swap the lead colors on RWRP pickups. So traditionally where the white is attached to the start of the coil they’ll have the black and the white on the finish. I hope that all makes sense.
