Nice indeed! It is really good to have something like that specifically for leather knives. It seems like traditional Japanese leather knives do need some legwork and preparation in order to harness its full potential.

yup! for Japanese planes, you would never imagine how much effort those woodworkers put their effort to it!

Not to nitpick, but I'm curious about your opinion: I see you sharpen your blade back and forth (or side to side, along the long edge of the stone). Would you consider doing a figure-8 pattern to be detrimental? Supposedly its an efficient way to sharpen Japanese style blades (wood chisels, in particular). Ideally, its supposed to remove more material than the back-and-forth?

Hello, Anthony, you didn't bother me at all. Thanks for the good input. you are right. doing figure 8 motion does help to grind evenly as you can divide pressure with one hand. but for this sharpening method. 1)blade is too short 2) it has a handle attached, it is very difficult to do figure 8 motion to flatten the back of this blade.

Hi, I accidently ruin my knife edge, but I cannot sharpen it. Tried and it still has those dents. I understand now that japanese knife has hard and soft metal. Do you have any suggestion to restore and sharpen it, start from the back side like yours, or from the front first, or else? Thanks before!

Hey Leathertoolz, can you recommend a splash and go whetstone? We recently picked up a King combo stone, but it requires a 30 minute soak. We'd rather touch up our cutting instruments as they need it, rather than waiting a month and doing a big batch. So we're thinking about a splash and go to do just touch ups as the need arises. Thanks!

+Bushcraft Beats hello! for splash and go stones, I recommend "Shapton Professional Series" or "Naniwa Chosera" they are fast cutting and high performance stones. I have them both sets too. 1000grit and 3000 grit and 8000 grit is a good set.
