Thanks for the video. My toilet valve was running but then I could not shut off the water to the toilet because the shut off valve was now bad. I thought I would have to replace the whole valve which was a soldered valve but replacing the valve stem was A LOT easier in an especially tight space. The old Brass Craft brass valve stem looks in good condition, just bad 30+ year gaskets I think. I'm going to size the gaskets and clean the valve stem up and re-use it. The new plastic stuff doesn't give me a lot of confidence. All told, under 40 minutes to replace the valve stem, toilet valve and clean up. Appreciate the clear instructions!

For everyone yelling, "just replace the entire valve w/ a new 1/4 corner turn valve!" Easier said than done. It appears as though he has CPVC pipes, and therefore the water shut off valve is a CPVC valve, which is solvent welded onto the CPVC pipe - it is not a compression valve. In order to replace the valve w/ a new one, he would have to very carefully hacksaw through the pipe directly behind the valve, so as to not crumble or crack the brittle CPVC pipe. And now he's lost inches of pipe. So he would then have to extend the CPVC pipe in order to place the new valve on. It's a pain in the ass! And as for the copper faucet water lines, those run directly into the faucet - there's no replacing them w/ braided flex lines. He would have to replace the entire faucet.

I have to ask if swapping out the rubber gaskets instead of replacing the entire stem would have worked just as well? For an outdoor water faucet, you typically replace the rubber gaskets to repair this type of leak.

Nota single plumber who visited our home was able to explain why we had a momentary back pressure that violently shot water from the back of a bathroom wall and leaked some water that caused a small leak on the ceiling on the lower floor. What happened was we shut all the valves in the house, but not the main water line for 2 month, meanwhile, we had a friend water our lawn 2 times a week. Would you know what might have cause that leak? The plumber was not able to locate the leak, now what?
@c.m.bigler
Жыл бұрын
You had some sort of backflow issue. In my experience it is due to a faulty valve from a tub faucet w/ a shower head. I won't pretend to know the exact science occurring within the pipes & valves, but I have seen this before. If that water main isn't off there's still full pressure that will flow wherever it can. Anytime you shut off locally only (only shut water off to the fixture you are repairing/swapping) keep in mind that when you go to initiate removal of a line...there's a chance of this happening. So know the location of that main shutoff and make certain there is a clear path to it just in case.

The water in this video has been turned off at the main valve for the house. If you don’t do that, the water would be flowing out of this pipe under the sink. Find the main valve for your house, turn it off, turn the sink handle open to drain the last bit of water, and then follow the instructions in this video. (He mentions the main valve at the end of the video, and he should have mentioned it at the very beginning.)

Also, it looks like your valve you showed for demonstration is compression fit, if you wanted to just get a new valve (compression fit), would you have to remove/cut any of that copper pipe? I'm just wondering because I feel if i can just put a new compression fit valve on there without removing pipe, this might be best as the new valve will have a better seat as well. Thanks

It detects leaks quickly on all types of tubing, valves, cylinders, pressure tanks or other systems under air, gas or oxygen pressure. My kitchen sink shutoff valves do not have nut tightened supply lines to the sink, but rather seem to be fully integrated valves with no way to remove and change out or replace the faucet feedlines. I guess they are old, they are solrt of quilted looking and not braided. I can find no tutorials on these things. My house was built in 1990, not so old, but I guess the builder used ultra cheap valves.. I want to put in a new faucet. Do the old valves have to be cut off and replaced with new? Do I need a plumber? There is veery little copper pipe between the valves and the wall.

If you have to use braided water supply lines easy to install or most new faucets have them built in. it…with all the time you waisted you could of worked on something else.
