Thanks for nice in depth video of the insides of this lens. having trouble with mine sometimes getting stuck in the far end, getting worse in moist conditions and its about time for me to fix it. and now i can understand what the problem concretically is. thumbs up!

Thank you for preparing this video. I just fixed my stuck focus on my over 10 year old lens. The cause was some glue from the printed circuit had seeped out enough over time to cause a sticky focus at the lower distances. Since the circuit board seemed solidly glued, I just scraped the excess glue off until the focus was smooth over all distances. There was also some oxidation inside the lens that may have made the problem worse. The repair would have been impossible without this video. I did run into a problem with removal of one of the flex cable terminals when one of the plastic locking clips broke. Some glue when I reinstalled the flex cable solved the problem. Installing the inner springs on the focus ring took a long time.

WOW Louis, that's really great to know. When I was in many of this lens, it looks like they all have the same problem with the loose circuit board, but I also found other problems with my own lens (this video), like you said about the flex cable terminals. In my lens, one of the terminals lock was broken so I need to add a very little drop of Super Glue and that works.

Very good video. May I also suggest an ever tiny amount of Stabilant 22 on the wipers and electrical contacts points. This is a glycol that will remain behind and protect from oxidation. A similar glycol is used in the printing industry to clean aluminum alloy plates. It is a Pluronic from DOW.

At about 49:20 You say something went wrong. Excuse me please if I am wrong. I started pumping gas at 18yrs and changing tires and breaks. Later I took training from HP printer co. I was always taught to place 4 or 5 screws and tighten in a star pattern. At 19 I thought it was Bull S. One day a customer came back because his brake drum was rubbing. My trainer asked if I did the star. I said, I think so, knowing I didn't I did every time after that. Anytime you have screws in a circle, they can easily warp the base and cause issues. I strongly feel this is the issue. remember that and I think you'll agree.

Thank you Sir. Do you think someone with mechanical skills could do this?? Without killing lens? Id like to try myself. Only focuses through view finder. Looking at LCD it refuses to engage. Have you heard of this. Through eyepiece it does well; slight clunking sound when initiated. But finds focus well. Thank you for video.

I love these videos, even though I don't own the lenses in question. Go figure. :) Question: what would have to be done to install more blades into a lens (even it it means 3D printing parts)? I have a set of Mamiya 7II lenses that are insanely sharp and low distortion, BUT, they have very few iris blades, and the bokeh for point light sources is ugly. I'd LOVE to increase the count to 14 blades like on good cinema lenses, and I bet thousands of Mamiya 6/7 owners would, too.

My 70 to 200 mm lens developed a new problem. The auto focus "hunts" at the 200mm zoom. I can fix it by switching the lens from AF to M and back to AF again but after a few shots the same thing happens. Any suggestions? Thank you for your great videos.

You should be very sure that the flex cable are correct put in, in the contact's on the circuit board, I had the same problem with my lens, maybe the flex cable's end's need some good cleaning with Isopropylalcohol 99% on a cottonbud or Q-tip.

yes, it's an idea, but it's expensive to screw. it is a screw among the 11 who fix the two parts, you would not have the measure or the specification by chance? (ex: M2.5 * 10)

I hope someone who has done this can help me. I took my lens apart and found the circuit board to be contacting at the close focus end. I pealed up the board and then epoxied it down. I lined up the hole in the end of the board with the hole in the body. I lined up the little wipers with the notch on the circuit board when the lens is at infinity focus. The problem is after I put it together I solved the focus sticking issue, but now the lens won't focus at all. It just keeps hunting back and forth. I have taken it apart checked things about 4 times now and it still hunts. It did not do this before I messed with it. Any ideas?

if you use manual focus, do you get the focus indicator dot in view finder? Somehow i feel that your case sounds like a contact problem not a mechanical one.

I would still recommend to put it apart again, recheck all the connectors and put it back again. Or you could discretely ask nikon service what they would think is causing this. somehow i feel they would just replace parts till it works regardless what is causing it. I dont have any actual knowlegde on the lens, but general reasoning with electronics. hunting suggests it works, but its missing a signal of confirmation from the body AF.

Well Ramon, the lens is complex but not that complex, but of course there is a lot of thing's to unscrew and remember to put back in again. I know I forgot the sticky tape and the rubber ring, because I would just see that my lens actually work's correct and It was working correct, I put the sticky tape and the rubber ring on after the film. Well, when we use the equipment a lot some parts will over time get worn out, but it can also be that, if it was produced a "monday or a friday" that could also be an issue, just to say that some series are better than other. And sometimes the vibrations in a lens could ended up so some wires simply break off the soldering.
@johnhaywood2584

What actually was the problem with the focus on your lens? I have the same lens. It will not auto focus at all. It just stopped suddenly. The VR still works as I can hear it and it stop if I turn off the VR. The autofocus just does nothing. It's definitely the lens as it works fine with others. All contact have been cleaned as well.

Well I Enjoy your videos whenever I come across them for the info provided on the cause of problem & how to fix it. however I hope it's your own lens Cause it looks to me like you put the switch panel upside down & that is killing me because of my OCD. & a customer would be totally unhappy about it. Just saying.
@michelthebassplayer

Having put back that switch upside down which I assume is not the first time explains the weird kink that I noticed in the ribbon cable to that switch which might cause a fail later as these cables are extremely fragile.

I do have this same lens. I went into DFA in Denmark for asking for a repair. The Nikon man in DfA tould that something is broken inside and they could´nt repair the lense because they don´t have the sparepart :-) So instead of have a sparepart to 50 cent you have to buy a newer lens. Isn´t it a SCAM of worst class?
@mikeno62
2 жыл бұрын
I think you are right, it's just way too "easy" for the repair business to say that a lens or camera or other things, that it will cost too much to get it repaired. The example with this lens is that many times it's the same thing that goes wrong with the parts, the problem with the focus in this lens is many times dust and dirt on the magnetic encoder strip or the MR head, I have made some videos about the problems,, just like the 24-70mm 1:2.8 G kzitem.info/news/bejne/1XyFyoltb6qqoKA or the 70-200mm 1:2.8 G kzitem.info/news/bejne/1XyFyoltb6qqoKA It's almost the same that happens in the old tape recorders if the sound or the recording was bad, then the tape head simply needed some cleaning with Isopropylalcohol 99% on a cotton bud, and then the sound was back to normal good sound. Of course lenses can by accident have been dropped or have some water damage but most of the time they are possible to be repaired, if the repair people really will want do it!. That's why I actually started my KZitem channel 11 years ago, just to show others out there that people can save a lot of money by doing the repair themself, but of course they must have some kind of a guide to help them during the process. /Kenneth
