I need to know how to fix the icemaker in a Sub Zero refrigerator.
That’s pretty ironic, given that it is named for making ice.
Ice makers go out a lot.
That’s especially true in Sub Zero which is a disappointment given how much it costs.
That doesn’t tell me how to fix it.
Replacing the whole ice maker is an option.
Given the cost, that’s one of my last options.
See if the lock indicator is on for the water dispenser to turn off the water flow. You hold down the key pad for five seconds to turn off that lock.
That’s for the water dispenser, not the ice dispenser.
If your Sub Zero fridge has the built in series dispenser lock function, the lock turns off both the water dispenser and the ice maker.
I don’t have that.
Check to make sure someone didn’t turn off the water to the fridge for a leak from the inlet valve.
If the inlet valve was leaking, we’d have replaced it by now.
If the solenoid in the valve that controls the flow of water is shorted or burned out, it can’t deliver water.
Ditto if the wiring to the valve got disconnected or shorted out, but I’d have to pull back the fridge and check the solenoids and wiring with a multi-meter to know that.
Just know that any value that’s zero or infinite for either resistance or current means that’s the problem, no matter what you’re checking.
If I turn off power to the fridge to check the solenoid valve, it should tell me there’s no current. But yes, the solenoids should have resistance in the couple hundred ohms or else that is the problem.
Another possibility is the water filter needs to be replaced.
It has an indicator light to let you know that is necessary.
And if someone turned off the light to make it go away without actually replacing the water filter, you won’t have enough water pressure to the ice maker to make ice.
I don’t think that’s the case.
If the water line through the freezer and up to the ice maker has an ice dam, the fridge can’t make ice or give you water.
It sputters out water.
If you have low water pressure in the house, the ice maker won’t run for lack of sufficient water to work properly.
That would cause the dishwasher and washing machine to stop too. Those appliances are fine.
Check that the ice bucket is in there the right way.
That’s on the Sub Zero website as one of the first things to check, but I already did.
Sub Zero refrigerators also turn off the ice maker if the door isn’t shut.
It isn’t like we sat there with the door wondering why there is no ice coming out - and doing that will melt the ice cream.
Have you checked the ice level indicator in the freezer?
Of course I did, and no, the fridge doesn’t think the ice level is already at its maximum.
If the switch for the ice level indicator is broken, it will think there is enough ice even if the tray is broken.
I don’t think I could fix that myself.
You could also see if the ice bucket auger spins or if the ice and auger are frozen together in a lump of ice.
If that happens, I know I need a new icemaker.
