Did you spray it on or wipe it?

Mine intermittently failed to start yesterday. It is 10 year old, so I am not really complaining but will give it a try and finger crossed your fix will do the job. Thanks.

Has anyone figured out how to prevent the rust build up? A spray coating or sealing the motor casing better?

I purchased one of these when they first were introduced by Toro. It lasted 12+years through many snow storms when it finally failed. Everything worked but a bearing failed and I couldn’t get the replacement part or assembly. I replaced it with the same model new machine. The new one didn’t last 5 light snows. Toro is typical of ALL once great American corporations where the ONLY focus is Executive compensation and paying no taxes. There are NO exceptions. No more American sold sh%t for me!

This fixed my problem also.........thanks for posting!!! I just want to add. While you're in there wipe the inside of the motor housing cover out. It will be coated with rust and other dirt.

Thanks for this video - - I opened up my PowerCurve 1800 as you explained and cleaned the comutatotor which fixed my snowblower. I went a step further and used 220 grit sandpaper on the running comutator to clean it so it looks like new. Also sprayed with CRC QD Electronic cleaner to make sure all the snadpaper grit was removed.

Thank you mykiBoy! My 5.5 year old Toro 1800 failed today after clearing a six inch snowfall and then the windrow at the end of the driveway and that windrow means I run it pretty hard. It's not something I do regularly nor do I recommend it since it can break the auger but if I get out there fast enough after the plow comes it seems to work ok. Cleaning the commutator with an alcohol pad and testing for tension of the brushes returned it to service!

I cleaned the spinner, but not the brush, which I didn't want to mess up by removing it. I had the resistance down to about 16 ohms, after cleaning with several qtips dipped in alcohol. So I plugged it in and ZOOM! It started right up! Resistance after that was down to 2 ohms. Thank you thank you for putting up this fine video. I was about to trash the thing after it stopped working late this winter. Now it's ready to go for next year. One thing I had to remember was to test resistance I had to push the buttons as if I was running the blower to get proper continuity. Forgot to do that the first time tested, felt pretty dumb! haha

Solved my problem as well. I bought the snow thrower brand new last winter. Worked fine. Took out of storage this year and wouldn't even start. Cleaned the brushes with alcohol and it works now. They were rusty and the plastic cover had rust stains too. Great design for a new machine that is designed to work in wet conditions!?
