Truing rough lumber by hand is one of the most gratifying and exhausting tasks in the woodshop. Builds some serious callous and sensitivity to the tools and wood too.

Nicely done Keith in firstly making an old plane useful again and then making a lovely cutting board.

With the routing endgrain, I always find that hogging out the majority going slowly and then taking a really fast shallow past works well. Stops burning and gives a clean finish👍

I have two scrub planes. A large 17" wooden plane and a No5 which had a 2mm hole in the sole which made it useless for anything else. I filled the hole with metal epoxy and then did exactly what you did with your No4. I will often use them on reclaimed timber like the Victorian floorboards I have at the moment. I'll take the top layers off with them because they often contain dirt which would quickly blunt my thicknesser blades. It's much easier to hone a new edge on a plane iron.

Wow... I saw that board on your Etsy Store this morning and thought it looked good... I am even more impressed now i have seen you make it... Fair play to you Keith for using the hand planes on this project... 👍👍

Great couple of vids on the scrub plane bud. Love watching your development of these often overlooked base skills over the years. Top work. On burning, it's a grunt issue. If you did the same cut with a corded 1/2" I'd hazard you'd see no burn. With the cordless, dig some waste out, then clean with the router. Beech is a great material to work but can be quite fibrous and a bit "chewy" on the tools in end grain.👍

Nicely done Keith 😁. Looks like the scrub works a treat 👍. But it really really looked like a hard workout so hats off to you, well done. The final product looks great and I'm sure it will sell quickly 😁. Thanks for the video Keith, stay safe..... and have a rest 😁👍.

Nice build Keith. Lovely finish. Your scrub planing was quite shallow, you can be quite aggressive with the cut and leave a deeper corrugated surface then smooth out with finishing plane. Also if you split the board on tablesaw, less effort & less waste to flatten the board halves then reglue. This way relieves some stresses in the board too.

Great finish and styling, I find the speed of pass makes a big difference to burn marks with most power tools. Also felt like a full workout video!

Looks great. Were you concerned at all that the part of the tree that you used would suffer more significant cupping with the constant wetting and drying? I'm curious if there's any way to know how it's held up to regular in kitchen use

Adjust the speed of the router based on the bit diameter. Probably going faster would end up with no burning here

Great job Keith! Quick question - how do you ensure that the two faces are in the same plane, i.e not at an angle to each other?
@JohnColgan.
3 жыл бұрын
If this was a standard 4x2 , 7x1, 6x2 etc he would set a reference face & reference edge, then use a marking guage from reference face to mark the parallel depth & plane to markings. Can still do it on this size board, but much more difficult on such a wide face. (Specially with the live edge)
@RagnBoneBrown

I tend to do it by eye to be honest, it's a cutting board so it doesn't need to be perfect, just needs to look true by eye
