Garages: the manual garage open string(cord) that hangs down can be grabbed with a bent coat hanger and pulled to open your garage door. It is surprisingly easy to do with a little practice from a thief. ---->FIX: u could cut the string(i dont reccomend in case of emergency) or do what I reccomend, which is to loop the string up and over so it doesn't hang down low enough for a coat hanger to grab the end of it to pull.

Air conditioner window unit: The lower window sach can be easily opened where there is a air conditioner window unit. -->FIX: u can secure the lower window from opening by inserting screws into the window track where the top of the bottom window stops. Make the screws hang out long enough to stop the window from opening further. U can also use this trick on any window that the lock is broken(u won't be able to open anymore, but its better than a theif opening it lol)

One thing you want to know before driving those 3" screws into the door frame. Don't drive them to hard once they get to the plate. It will suck your door frame in and you will have a lager gap between your door and frame. Just put them in till the screw hit the new or old plate and then hand tighten the last little to sink the screw flush with he plate or be very careful using your drill slowing way down at the end.

I secured the new steel door and door frame with the 3" security screws which have a more aggressive thread and really bite into the thick wood frame I installed, the new deadbolt was also a high security lock with a heavy duty strike plate and a longer hardened steel bolt. The high security lock has another advantage over a regular deadbolt you can't bump the lock cylinder out with a hammer like some thieves have been known to do. To bad I didn't do this before the robbery, but the elderly people that live in neighborhoods for many years don't think it's neccessary until it happens. Great advice just hope people listen.

It's not that the cops aren't doing anything. They (burglars) know that if they can enter a house quickly as depicted in the viedo, they can get in and out on less than five to ten minutes. The police response time at best is five minutes after they get the call, it may take a couple of minutes for the call taker to get the information (location etc.) then they can dispatch the police. Burglars target the master bedroom for jewelry, money, guns, laptops, etc. They also target the family room for laptops and any other small valuables. They used to take TVs but the new TVs are wall mounted and the screens are easily damaged so they don't usually take time to take them. In the videos depicted the break-ins occurs late night when the neighbors are asleep so nobody hears the crashing noise. If they do they don't realize a break-in is occurring. Usually break-ins (burglaries) occurs during the daytime hours when people are at work, school, etc.

@@zephsmith3499 just in case George doesn’t reply…hire someone that has experience. Doors can be tricky even for an experienced carpenter. If you’re really handy maybe watch a few videos about hanging doors to learn the basics and maybe you’ll get lucky. If the door was hung correctly from the start you might be able to drive a few screws into the middle of the jam to reinforce a deadbolt striker with no issues at all. If it wasn’t hung correctly you’ll probably suck the jam into the stud and most likely break the casing on both sides. It’s nothing major but it can be avoided. From my experience hanging and demoing hundreds of doors and windows, most of the time the jams are not shimmed adequately to take the screws described in this video without seeing the jam move inwards at least to some degree…probably enough to effect the way the door works if not breaking the casing (depending on how it was nailed).

Great information. May I suggest when replacing the hinge screws, only replace one at a time so you don't have to hold the weight of the door while installing the screws. (I know most people don't need to be told this. lol) Also, you should drill the correct size "Pilot" hole for those 2-3/4" to 3' screws. The correct size pilot hole will be slightly smaller than the shaft size of the screw shank without the threads. (This means you need to leave a lot of "Meat" for the screw threads to be able to bite into, in order to hold in the screw). This should be a 1/8" or smaller size drill bit depending on the size of the screws you are using. You may also drill the pilot hole a little shorter than the screw you are using. (Drill 2-1/2" deep holes for 2-3/4" long screws.) This keeps the drill bit from penetrating into a void that may have foam insulation or wires that could get twisted around the drill bit. If you find you are having a lot of trouble getting the screws to penetrate the wood with that size hole, you can try the next larger size drill bit to make your pilot hole. (The next size the manufacturer makes, not necessarily the next bigger size you happen to have at home) Only drill one pilot hole at a time until you find the correct size bit needed to make the holes, so you don't ruin all the holes. THAT WOULD BE A VERY BAD THING TO HAPPEN. If you don't drill a pilot hole you may crack the wood (cracking the wood would make it very weak) or damage the screw head or break the screw in two, due to the high Torq requirements needed to get that oversized screw into that tiny hole. I broke a screw in half while driving it into a hole that I never drilled a pilot hole for. I had to unscrew the top part of the screw that broke and then install a very short screw into that hole because there is no removing the broken part of a screw from a hole. I've heard of people using liquid soap or bar soap to lubricate the screws to help them go in easier.

Pilot holes are a great idea for homes built from rock oak 2X4s from the 1940s or earlier. Modern homes are built from fast growth pine stick lumber. The wood is so soft that no pilot hole is needed. That's why 3" screws are so important. The 3/4" screws can be pulled out of soft pine, although usually the back edge of the pine will splinter away with a decent kick.
@realpatriot5896
Жыл бұрын
If I do drill a pilot hole I usually do it about 1/32 less than the recommended bit or about 1/32 smaller than the screw shaft. Maybe a little more like 3/64. It works very well and if done right the screw will hold better than one just screwed into pine because it keeps the wood from splitting especially really dry wood.
@m3photo726

Also, if there are wires there that a drill bit could twist, Murphy’s law states that at least one of those screws will proceed to strip the insulation and cause a short circuit forcing you to remove the door, dismantle the whole frame, repair the damage and turn a ten minute job into one that ruins your tea break.

My only question is, why is the advice not to dump your entire clip into the door where they are standing behind it instead of getting to a safe place and calling people for help that may or may not even care. I don't know about dispatch in your area, but in Amarillo they don't care. Sometimes they'll even refuse to even give us assistance and just be jerks instead. And they're allowed to do it. Myself, I'll empty my clip and then put the next one in in case it didn't do the job. I've got cameras on the door so I'd be able to see.

I had rental houses in the shady part of town and when I replaces the doors, I wrapped the 2x4 with metal 2x4 to give the extra strengths. (a new 2x4 will slide inside the metal 2x4 with ease try it at the home center first) You might need to do some cutting and trimming (on an older home with real 2x4) but it works well. @@michaelatoz580 the older type 2x4's were 2x4 ruff sawn but newer 2x4's are smooth so they 1.5x3.5 because they have been smooth cut. The simple reason why 2×4 is not 2 inches by 4 inches is that lumber mills trim off rough or warped surfaces of a 2×4 to give it a more polished and finished look. By planning the lumber on all four sides, the original 2×4 is now reduced to 1 ½ inches by 3 1/2 inches. The 2x4 refers to the rough-cut wood.

Fully agree to fortify your doors. Most houses also have a sliding patio door or a French door in the rear. If a criminal wants in they’ll just break that glass. At minimum, place a stick in the track behind the closed sliding door to prevent it from being opened from the outside. You can also add screws to the top inside door track that are left out about a 1/4 inch to prevent the door from easily being lifted up and off the track. In a crisis, seconds can count.

If they were willing to spend upwards of a minute making loud noises on a door, they will have little to no reservation to shatter a window. So many houses with security bars before the main doorframe (with its own security door as well), with security door on the back, still get broken into because the weakest link is still always an option.

They have both the door with a locking mechanism and a deadbolt that is much stronger than a normal wood construction door. Many feature see out but not inside metal screens that are far more harder to get into because of the rigid rods that are also integrated into the door Impenetrable No but far harder to break down or into than normal wooden entrance doors. Plus you can do what the man says in addition to your metal storm door. Lot of banging going on to get inside this storm door. You will have sufficient time to call the cops and arm yourself. I would also but impact resistance windows to augment this. Best of luck ans and Godspeed!

@neptun2810

@@rawman44 I don’t think there is a room in any normal building that we can’t get into somehow, but the stronger your doors, windows, walls, etc. are, the longer it takes. The big “advantage” that firelighters have over criminals in that matter is that criminals try to avoid making noise, while we don’t care. Ideally you want a door that can be opened fast, but it takes a lot of noise to do so. Normal wooden room doors that open into the room you want to enter, you can just kick in with one strong kick of your foot. One loud noise and that’s it, no obstacle for a criminal, he’s in after like 5 seconds. If the door opens to your side, that’s a bit more complex. The most common technique here is to use our Halligan Bar (basically a better crowbar) and take a sledgehammer to drive it between the door and the door hinge like a wedge, breaking off the hinge and pulling the door out. If everything works fine, this takes about 20 seconds, but it makes a lot of noise. And if it’s a stronger door, like steel, and it opens inside the room you want to enter, then it’s basically impossible to enter without someone noticing. If it’s too strong to kick in and there are no hinges on your side, and you also can’t pick or drill the lock, then the next best way would be to saw your way trough. Even in that case it won’t take long, but a few minutes are a long time when you’re trapped in a room that’s on fire.
@neptun2810
Жыл бұрын
@Critters And Cretins Of course. Like I said, there is no room we can't acess. But the stronger your door is, the more it slows the firefighters down. When your door looks like a bank vault where we need like 10 minutes to saw trough 10 centimeters of strong steel, then it's too much. Idealy you want a door that can be opened fast, but it takes a lot of noise and special equipment to do so.

To make it harder for them to get out of the house after they steal your stuff, you can do these two things: 1. Use a double cylinder dead bolt. They require a key to open the dead bolt from the outside AND the inside. Just don't leave the key in the dead bolt when you are home. 2. Pin the door. Super easy and cheap! Get some large, thick, finishing nails. Finishing nails have a very small head on the end. They need to be 3 - 4" or so in length. Pound about 6 finishing nails equally spaced into the door frame on the hinges side. Then, slowly close the door onto the nails to mark where the nails hit the door. Take a drill slightly larger than the nail heads diameter and drill holes in the door where the nails touch the door. Now when you close the door the nails slide into the holes and "pin the door". When a thief breaks into your house, they will have to come in through a window, because the door is so fortified, with recommended steps in this video and the pinning. So, once they break in, with this door not being able to be opened from inside, because it requires a key, the thief also can't take off the hinges and remove the door because it's pinned. The pins prevent the door from coming out even if the hinges are removed. Now the thief has to take what he's stealing from you back through the window he came in from! Making it much harder to steal anything that's large. Best of luck! 😎🤘
