Now, the first thing to understand is exactly why freestyle rapping is so important and the LIFE benefits you’ll get from learning it, let alone the possible money to be made and social adulation you can attain.
In a study published in the journal of Scientific Reports, researchers found that when freestyle rappers improvised lyrics, there was increased activation in the prefrontal cortex of the brain.
This area is responsible for creative thinking, decision-making, and self-expression.
In other words, freestyle rap engages the brain in a way that promotes creativity and self-expression.
Another study published in the journal NeuroImage found that when freestyle rappers were improvising lyrics, there was increased activity in the hippocampus.
This area of the brain is responsible for memory formation and recall. The study suggests that freestyle rap can improve memory recall and cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to switch between different modes of thinking.
Thus by learning to freestyle, you actually improve your brain capacity, verbal acuity, and indeed creative thinking that can help in a VARIETY of ways to improve your life.
A’ight, let’s get into the basics of freestyle rapping.
There are two ways to practice: on a beat and without a beat
Now, while there will always be opportunities to practice “without a beat”… a.k.a. any day in normal life, if you want to improve your flow and impress people when you freestyle, you should always spend at least 75% of your time practicing on a beat.
Why?
Because it’s how you’ll start to lock in your rhythm and start to naturally “meld” with the instrumentals you hear when you are rapping… in other words, your flow.
Flow is like the drum patterns of your words, and it’s what makes your freestyle rap sound smooth and effortless.
This is why when you see expert freestylers such as Harry Mack or Juice Wrld rarely ever ‘stumble’ over their words when they freestyle… it seems so natural.
It’s because they mostly practice freestyling over beats, which means they are simultaneously learning HOW TO STAY ON BEAT while freestyling AND how to come up with new things to say.
So, from the very beginning, you need to be practicing locking in your flow to beats while learning how to freestyle rap.
When you have a few minutes with no beats around, then you can focus on your rhyme choice rather than flow to practice your freestyles.
