Shows how to achieve smooth and mirror like surface finishes with just a normal High Speed Steel cutting tool.
It is not necessary to use a file, nor any abrasive wet and dry material, which I know is often used for this purpose in some workshops.
This demonstration on a Boxford Lathe, also illustrates that it is not always necessary or even possible to apply auto feeds to generate a taper by use of the compound slide. The exception being, if the lathe has a taper turning attachment, but in some cases this could be limited to smaller angles.
Hand feed is used throughout, having the advantage of being able to control a variable rate of feed, as the diameter of the work piece increases or decreases.
In order to achieve the desired effect, it is important to select the correct tool for the material and this should have a sharp cutting edge.
Observation of the continuous hand movement to apply feed rate, will be beneficial. This technique can then be practiced by the student or other learners wanting to improve their skills.
The workpiece shown here is a component part for the Space Ship project, 🚀which is being designed for a young child.
Sliding and push fits will be incorporated within this design. There could also be press fits as the project develops. For updates,
