I am surprised everyone is so excited in the comments. I don't see benefits from the master volume rather than smoother control. The majority of more classical tube amps sounds really great only when power tubes do the job working in nonlinear regime providing that famous compression and harmonics we all love. By reducing the volume in fx loop we don't let the power tubes do the magic. So, proper reactive attenuator is a real solution. Some modern higain amps sounds good without cranking the master volume, but then you also don't need anything in fx loop as you can just turn the master volume down.
@lovecraftmusic8717

In one of my many thoughts I've always known that using an EQ pedal in the loop would have work similar to a power break...the real difference is the position of the volume attenuation: with a powerbreak you basically reduce the volume that goes to the speakers while with an EQ in the loop your're attenuating the volume of the preamp section.
@elevensixty2434
5 жыл бұрын
this(volume control between pre and power amps)=preamp pushed, power amp not, speaker not (speaker tone/character compromised) attenuator=preamp pushed, power amp pushed, speaker not (power amp "adds tone", attenuator degrades) nothing=possible to push preamp, power amp, and speaker (full character/tone, but maximum volume) soundproof box with speaker(cab with a speaker in a box)= tone still compromised by sealed space there are tradeoffs good and bad, professional soundproof studios will always have their place, but alternatives have improved, as have digital options. Great video and channel. Wisdom I wish I knew when I started, and am glad to find as I'm starting guitar again after long hiatus. Subbed!
@ayoungethan

@andrewt248 I was thinking a bit about this. Although it's not the same as a post-power stage attenuator, it must still have an effect on the power stage. Weakening the signal going into the power amp requires higher power amplification levels to get the same volume back. So it would work the power amp harder in that sense, yeah? But I do wonder what sort of effect it might have on touch sensitivity

The volume pedal in the loop trick is usually not needed if your amp has a MV. That’s essentially what a volume pedal in the loop is....... a MV. This trick is awesome for NMV amps that have a loop. This seems like a great tip Phil, especially for non-master volume amps with a loop. But how does the behavior with a volume pedal or EQ pedal in the loop differ from just turning down the master volume on an amp that has a master volume control? The master volume pot usually feeds the phase inverter, right? And it's normally fed by the cathode follower from the effects loop return, no? So is there any real difference between the two? Thanks!

As you mentioned mean the end, if you like the sound of your output tubes being loaded, when they are cranked up, then you want a power soak/attunator between the amp and the speaker, so you can crank it up without the neighbors calling the police. @thisguy2973

Only if you’re angus young with a clean single channel amp do you get power amp distortion, which sounds bad tbh. 99% of guitars use preamp distortion, so it’ll work just fine.

How is that different from keeping the master volume low?!? ok, you can turn the master volume up a bit as the signal from the preamp is lower but whats the point? you still won't get power amp distortion without getting too loud - so your tone will be the same as if you just kept the master volume low and forgot about the volume pedal...am i missing something here?

+Chris Müller Some tube amps tend to not only have the good breakup at low volumes, but they also sound really thin when you get the master down to bedroom levels. I would personally recommend doing this with an eq pedal that has gain settings rather than a volume pedal so that you can boost the low end up a little and re-shape the sound. Either way, you're still cheating the amp out of its sweet spot, but it makes it more manageable when you don't want to play through a solid state/modeling amp.

Just a comment regarding the Floyd vs PRS/Parker/Music Man tremolos; Based on personal experience, the Floyd will allow you to decrease tension on the strings so much, if a standard, nut were in the place of the locking nut, the strings would most likely not make it back into their own nut slots upon the increase of the tension as you release the arm. I've never messed with Parker or Music Man trems, but the PRS trem just doesn't have the same range. I'm sure the Music Man is much closer, but still, not the same. Besides, if the PRS trem DID give the same or a similar experience to having a Floyd, why would PRS be making Floyd equipped guitars? No, I'm not trying to bash those tremolos, I'm just throwing a point out there. Also, as far as the comment about the locking tuners, I have locking tuners on most of my guitars, including a Floyd Rose equipped one. Releasing the locks on the nut, and relying solely on the locking tuners (Planet Waves by the way), the same stability is not provided. Yes, I get it's not a completely fair experiment as it's not the same as having a standard nut in the place of the locking one, but it does give insight into it Wilkinson vs100s are also excellent tremolos that stay in tune without the need for locking nuts and saddles
