I disagree completely. I am full time ongoing Federal Government for many years now. More important to study APS values and APS code of conduct and apply for a non ongoing position with the specific agency or department rather than private employment agencies. I only see non ongoing people & IIE’s (Irregular & intermittent employment) being successful in obtaining ongoing positions from within Govt rather than employment agencies. If you get your foot in the door it’s important to nominate for additional duties, don’t dress like a slob, don’t take time off, don’t gossip, take all feedback in a positive manner and you will be offered a permanent position.in due course.

I completely agree with this. Though the easiest way into the APS is definitely through contracting. It’s up to you to convert that into an ongoing position, but it requires everything you’ve mentioned above.

Good advice Steve. I will definitely be applying for a permanent position once I prove myself and complete this assignment. At least having my foot in the door for me is a start. How do you feel about job security within this sector? That is what I am focusing on long term, especially what is going on with the lock downs right now.. I will be working for the HCC, NSW gov dept.

Hey Steve/Mountain, just wondering what criteria they will look at that convert from a non-going to an ongoing position? Is this a PR thing or decided by the management directly above?

great advice! would this also include applying for Temporary Employment Directorates for specific departments as well?

Right you are.. The application process is gruelling for some. I was blessed to land a 6 month contract position via an employment agency in Sydney. I am absolutely THRILLED to have the opportunity and once I (God willing) successfully complete this assignment, I will hopefully remain with this employer for the remainder of my work life. I am also hoping job security within the NSW gov dept will be ongoing, all going well. Great vid, not too many people know about this shortcut.

Hey man thanks for this video! I have a question: do you think it's also easier to get a permanent position one day in the fedgov after getting contract work? Also, I'm looking to do government policy work in the future, currently applying through the graduates portal, but if that fails (as I'm aware its highly competitive) do you think working in gov admin roles and moving around until you reach policy work is a viable strategy?

@@purplepingers Thanks for the responses. Just one last question - what was the move to Canberra like for you? Was it easy finding somewhere to live? I'd be relocating from Perth and I have no family and friends living in Canberra

Would you recommend going through the High School Leaver program after Year 12 and working through APS 1/2 then applying to APS 3/4, or pursue a degree and then get placed into a APS 3/4 position through the Graduate program? Which is more worth it long term and for career advancement?

I can't speak for everyone, but I've been accepted for it this year and the person who was in my shoes last year has already been promoted to an acting APS4 salary and responsibilities. Im sure its different in different places tho

Do you think the federal government are keen to hire people with social work degrees? Or are the positions more suited to individuals with degrees in law/politics/economics/finance and HR etc?

Definitely areas within Services Australia, Veterans Affairs and DSS that highly value those degrees! There would be others too :)
