Well done on getting your first permanent job MItch. I started at my first Job as a Data Analyst and also a Tuks Alumni. And I also definitely recommend getting a recruiter.

So glad you chose the company that offered a job role you found appealing rather than the one that paid the most. A job can be lined with gold but if it carries responsibilities that exhaust your patience you'd have left soon thereafter anyway so there's really no point in pinning your hopes to a false star like that. I love the fact your employer was so enthusiastic about you having completed the computer engineering degree at Tuks, that in itself validates all the hard work we saw you do month after month and year after year on this channel.

I absolutely relate a lot with you when it comes to job hunting. It was hard and sometimes depressing especially when you don't hear back from like 90% of the jobs you applied for. I applied through TUKS careers and luckily got hired. Is it too early to ask for a video pertaining how to budget or spend your salary? Like where to invest, how to divide your expenses and all that.

Freelancing is also an option I know freelancers who make BANK in Gauteng. There is so many companies out there who are looking to get work done weather it's business admin portals or simple automation or moving people to the cloud there is a literal goldmine of opportunity in SA. So don't be afraid to go at it alone just spend at least 2 years employed first so you can get the lay of the land and find your feet. Also: NEVER stop learning, be a sponge.

Hey Mitch, im currently in matric and going to study BDatSci at stellenboasch next year but I'm really keen on getting actual job experience. I've made a few projects but ultimately I'm really eager to find small client work. Do you have any tips for finding a side job/project for a client while in university? (Excluding the fact that it might be very difficult to balance it)

Nothing as fancy as that. Focused on tutorials, past papers and the semester tests from earlier in the year. Practice practice practice - especially when it comes to things like Maths

Likely like 20-30k per month for a junior dev in SA. That's what I've heard for Comp Eng grads, anyway. It's much higher in the USA, you can be making up to 100-150k per month for an entry-level job, but of course, living expenses are also much higher, and there's more competition. Plus, I also don't know how well they will respect a South African degree over there. PS. Mitch sorry for commenting so much here lol.

@@mitch7w Yep, it's hectic. But it might make sense if you can live frugally, to do it for a few years. I'm sure you can accumulate savings much faster with those high salaries and then bring it over if you want to stay in SA. Obviously, it will only last so long, but might be able to give you a headstart or kickstart a company.

@@benno8699the US - as with any other country - like South Africa - caters to their own graduates first. If you can get into the US, it's mostly going to be a crappy job, and your resources will be dismal. They keep you on a hook and pay you scraps. As such, if you're a local graduate with minimal experience, it might pay to stay here until you have enough years down your belt to move. With this "brain drain" rocky horror show journalists speak so fond of, It's clear why this happens: such a tight-fisted local workforce causes so many of us to seek better opportunities abroad. Contrary to beggars belief, software engineering - primarily because of the low bar of entry - proves a more competitive discipline than most trades in the junior/entry level, and , not to mention, wholly underpaid, with a dismal financial return of investment. In succession, and thanks to the advent of AI, hearing back after 6 months from an employer, after they received 100s of applications is becoming the norm. Sadly, In this country, if you don't summon a VIP chair with the right crowds, went to a local university, and met the right people at the right time, you - and here's the FUN part- won't get far.

You can get a software developer job easily with a CS or CE degree. If you're interested in the engineering side though and can handle it I definitely recommend giving it a shot!
