My old man got an M1 from the CMP back in the 1980s. I was a little kid then but I still remember how excited he was when the wooden box box came. We lived in a pretty anti-gun city where it later became illegal to get firearms shipped directly to your house. My old man is long dead (through no fault of the M1) but I still have a great time down at the range with it.

Oh hey I'd just like to add that the CMP gauges and function fires everything that leaves the facility so you know you're getting a safe, functional rifle. Also they have physical locations in Anniston, AL, Talladega, AL and Port Clinton OH. You can walk out the same day with an M1 if you bring the 3 documents!

Not always. They may do it with service grade and better but the rack grade I bought wasn't gauged; or at the very least they didn't put the readings on the tag. Everything is still functional- the safety moves as it should that locks in position, the op-rod isn't damaged, spring looks good, it fires/cycles properly and is still acceptably accurate.

The CMP dates back as you said to the early 20th century, and along with the NRA, were government sponsored groups to provide civilians with opportunities to learn and hone their marksmanship skills should they be called to military service. The NRA for example came about after the civil war, as it was determined that southern were better shots than northern soldiers. It was attributed to their upbringing around guns. So the NRA was about teaching people to shoot should they be drafted

The purpose of the DCM and then the CMP was for every American to become proficient and you are keeping in that spirit. Got mine in 2021. Took a while but was totally worth it, a beautiful and accurate Service Grade SA from the Korean War era. The club I used was the RWVA, having attended an Appleseed shoot (Highly recommended due to the skills it will impart to a beginner, and it qualifies as proof of marksmanship to boot). Don't know how it is now, but you used to be able to put a post-it with your rifle preference (Springfield, H&R, Winchester, etc., WWII era, Korean War era, etc.) on top of your application, and they would try to fill your request (no guarantees, of course - Winchesters are rare). Good luck everyone and hope to see you on the range!

Can confirm, CAC is the best. We were TDY at Maxwell this July, they let us use our 2-hour pass, then cleaned and shipped the rifles home for us. On the range, a 90-year-old Korean war vet helped us zero the rifle. To say they were enthusiastic to have younger military guys there would be an understatement and let us stay way longer than 2 hours. I'm pretty sure every old guy working the range was a vet. Also, the 600 yard range is 10/10. Watching this video to order another from home ;)

A couple months late to the game, but I just wanted to add my experience with this about 6-7 years ago: I got a Mid 1950's south korean vintage mismatched with some WW2 parts, and a strikingly contrasted forend and stock. I absolutely love the thing. It was a "tack driver" right out of the crate, and even though it's got something of a bastard history, I feel the connection with my grandfather who was at Inchon, and my great uncle who was in Normandy, every time I hear the "ping" of an ejected clip. My OCD tendencies subsequently led me to "collect" an M1a as well as the "scout" and "socom" variants...but I've sold everything except for my "as close as possible to an M14,"...and my CMP M1. You're not going to get perfect if you get one of these...you're going to get amazing, and the two of you are going to grow together.

heard about this almost 20 years ago. I had thought they had run out of M1's to give.

C&R firearms still have to be sent to an ffl for you to be unconstitutionally background checked UNLESS you have a c&r license or an ffl yourself.

One thing to be aware of. You NEED to keep an eye out for the shipping notification email. The last time i bought a Garand they input the shipping address incorrectly. I got the email at like 6pm so i immediately emailed them back and called them the next morning. They had to have the rifle returned to them so they could fix it and send it back out. Not a huge inconvenience but something to be aware of.

In the early 2000's you could buy Greek Rack Grades for $295 a piece, and they were far nicer than most of the field and service grades you see today. The supply has dried up in the past 4 or 5 years and the CMP is scraping the bottom of the barrel . Almost everything is SOLD OUT, and those rifles that do remain will arrive with new barrels and new stocks. Don't get me wrong...the CMP is a great organization. But is you're looking to spend $1000 to $1400 on an M1 Garand, going to a gun show and picking out a nice rifle with a WWII receiver and a USGI stock and mostly WWII parts is going to be your best bet compared to playing the CMP lottery.

i had no idea the CMP still did anything at all! pretty interesting. i long for the good ol days when you bought firearms through mail order catalog. maybe in the very distant future, but probably never going to happen again

Our local shooting range has a monthly M1 match. They have rifles you can borrow, and it's specifically tailored (with the paperwork) to meet the CMP match participation requirement. And... that has been the case almost everywhere I have lived. The local public range almost always has a CMP match either monthly or every other month.

Somehow this is the one historic weapon that’s more expensive here in Canada than America! Don’t believe me? Mosin Nagants are ~200 dollars over here (which is like maybe $150 USD) They also used to be under $100 in CAD before Trudeau

Thanks man. I will do this; I would love to own a M1 Garand. I have to check and make sure I did the correct training, I-1623, I have done a few different classes, should be fine.

This is probably a far easier and cheaper way to get an M1 Garand. At gun shows and gun stores, a decent M1 Garand or reproduction would cost like $3,000. Seeing that former/current military, police and gun club members can get one for $1,200 is freaking awesome. If I had the money right now I would have one yesterday.
