Heh. Back in after a 30 year break. Had a clearout at my folks' house and discovered my models from when I was palying WFB and WH40K in the 80s. Decided to see if I could still paint, and a year on, I'm very much back in! Star Breach, Dragon Rampant, Kill Team, Bolt Action, Kill Team, Zona Alfa, Last Days... oh my. Managed to find a few like-minded pople at work who were similar lapsed gamers and having a blast. Also, have to say that watching Uncle Atom while I was relearning to paint was a big part in drawing me back in - so a big thank you for that!

20 years. Necromunda brought me back. The paints, the models, the techniques are so different now. For me, the reasons for absence were life commitments. But it's a lot harder to find people to play with now.

The great thing about this guy and his videos, I don't paint, build, or play tabletop war games, never have, but his videos and messages are still super relevant to other areas of my life and I watch them because he gives such good advice that can be applied to anything. His wisdom far exceeds just tabletop war gaming.

The rules for the last edition got.....better....generally better. Good time to jump back in tbh. I'm busy with work a lot lately, so I jumped back in via kill team and was pleasently surprised at how fun it was, and short the games are. there's a free app called battlescribe for mobile / pc that calculates point values for you, shows summary of abilities etc. so you don't have to add everything up yourself.

All you need to do now is buy the latest ruleset and codex for your army, plus whatever new 'must have' models are required to give your army any chance of winning. Ps, in a couple of years you will probably have to buy the 9th edition rules, along with a revised codex.

I got out of gaming, mostly 40k, back in 2002. I got back into it in 2019. I left largely because I didn’t feel I was good at the game, and there weren’t many people in my area that played. Fast forward and through KZitem I discovered that the hobby could be more then the playing. Through this channel and awesome dudes like Duncan Rhodes I decided that I could enjoy the modeling and painting side of the hobby, while also now having a four year old. I had all my minis still, about 50% unpainted, and I bought paints slowly. It’s been really rewarding and I’m glad I came back.

Funny to hear my story on the video. I took a break when we got the second kid. I had to slow down when the first one came, but still could do it somehow. But with the second one, it was not possible anymore. So I stopped at 2006. Got back 10 years later and the whole world was different, WHFB was gone. After trying this and that GW released Shadespire, first season of Underworlds. Tried it, liked it and not only that, got my older son into Underworlds as well. And enjoying it today more than ever!

Having a community is one of the best ways to never fall out and/or get back in. Without a community, or even a friend life can meander without a hinter of what was before. Influences from a young (and very different) age were determinant factors (drugs, college, hormones, career, etc) Until now (36) I could not parallel my hobby with my life very smoothly. I guess there just comes a point where one says to themselves...”Life is no longer going to ruin my hobby.” Jokes aside, the community I now have is U-tube and this did not exist for me (or the hobby) 20 or even 10 years ago. There is a “born again” feeling so strong thanks to the community one would think this was the work of Aquarius. Much love to you (TM) and those who had it in there hearts to carry on when there was nobody motivating them but themselves and their passion. Because like shepherds leading us into the new age, this community helps parallel the hobby with ones life and perhaps in such a way the hobby actually drives the determining factors of life. It’s such a wonderful symphony now that I could never imagine life “getting in the way” to a degree where I just fall out.

Moment of truth. Came across your channel 2 years ago while renovating house. Cant remember what the link was but I do remember watching your "too many hobbies" video. Probably wasnt the first lateral link from whatever led me here. Fast forward couple years - rediscovered a love of the hobby after a 20+ year hiatus. Mainly bolt action and Epic 40k now. Loving collecting, building, painting - as a 40 something as opposed to mid teenager. Thank you Uncle Atom. I say uncle, but figure theres only 5 or 6 years in it. But it works. Dont stop what you are doing. Hats off!

I've stopped painting my armies in over 2 years now due to the demands of University. But I have managed to retain my interest by other avenues of the hobby that do not interfere with my studies. Just after my first semester, I started reading Horus Heresy and 40k books on the way to Campus and during travel time in public transport. Really helps me get back into the Hobby during my term breaks, especially with Visions of Heresy art books and the Horus Heresy series.

I know this is an old video, but The last time I did anything with the hobby was 8 months ago while I was taking care of my mother in the last few days in her fight with cancer. It's been hard just thinking about picking up a brush and finishing the bases on the Khorne Daemons I'd been working on. Been distracted, new job, new home, new life compared to 8 months ago. I really want to get into the hobby again, though, and this video has helped get me over that slump, I think. Gonna catch up on all the old podcasts I'd listen to, watch some lore videos, maybe look at some paints and models - Just get that excitement up again, like you'd talked about. I think that would really help. Thank you, Atom.

I think I was around 11 or 12 when I stopped playing, hitting puberty and going to high school kind of took over my life I suppose but here I am sitting on the cusp of my 30th year and I'm setting up a space to hobby and most of the tools and supplies are ordered and on their way. I never fell out of love with the 40k verse, it's always stuck with me from talking about it with friends, playing a Dark Heresy campaign at one point in my later teen years, and in more recent years listening to lore videos here on KZitem and I've always wanted to get back into the hobby It's just never been the right time, til now! I just wish I didn't have to wait til Nov-Dec 2020 for my second wave Indomitus box but at least when it comes I'll have everything I need to try and make my younger self proud!

"Unless you are a much, much, much better person than I am, I bet you have some that are unpainted."-(Uncle Atom quote). I laughed so hard when you said this because I took a 15-year break and when I got back into the hobby I had a basement full of WarmaHordes minis waiting to be painted. I mean boxes full of minis. I thought I was ok to use all of my old hobby supplies but I found out that Green Stuff doesn't keep for 20 years. Plus I found that I am much more a skirmish gamer than a full army gamer now. As usual, great video Uncle Atom.

Great vid! Stopped playing 20 years ago when uni, work and life got in the way. Dabbled a couple of times but then new babies, house moves etc come along. Now finally have evenings when I can spend time chilling out (and frankly need the mental break from v stressful work!). Kill team / Blood Bowl are the gateway drug for both my return and teaching my kids the hobby too! I have to say i am a bit sad WHFB is dead (I have a massive undead army), but 40k (and the tonnes of books of lore in the Heresy series) are more than enough to keep me entertained. Painting up some new models / terrain (which is SOOO much better nowadays), and working through my Dark Angels company (20% done so far) in between. Also bought an airbrush a few weeks back and I dont know how i survived without one! Great channel and great content - keep up the fantastic work! :D

The point you mentioned about getting into warhammer through Underworlds is exactly how I got in after about 8-10 years out. Sold all my old figures (minus one or two I was proud of) so couldn't jump back into 40k or AoS, and Underworlds just had such a low barrier to entry due to the low costs. Let me get back in and scale up slowly, which is perfect now that I actually have bills to pay.

Recently my husband suggested getting my miniatures finally out again and we started putting stormcast eternals, nighthaunt and nowmalifaux together. I left the wargaming hobby almost ~18 years ago. I never managed to paint much. There really wasn't many tutorials or guides back then. I liked painting, but I always felt like I was running around in the dark, and most time I got frustrated, and almost never finished models. I'd really like to come back and change that. I think I never really understood just how much work goes into painting minis, and while seeing all the amazing work that people do around the world can be discouraging - to me it's actually encouraging because I finally understand just how much time and practice you have to put in to paint models to a certain standard. When I was younger I also never had the income to support the hobby. Now that I earn a decent income I can quite easily afford all the paints, brushes, tools, scenery and other stuff I need to paint models without feeling restricted. I'm think it may actually be a good thing to spend a bit of money when you get started again, so you get a good set of things to play around with. If you just get a starter pack with 14 colors and a single size brush you will most likely feel really restricted. I may have gone a bit crazy, but I'm spending around 400 euro getting back into the hobby, getting some decent paints, brushes, tools, sculpting and terrain supplies, glues, flock, etc. I'm not buying a lot of models, I'm just getting a dozen or so, I'll try and stay focused on finishing the models I buy, and getting a good selection of paints & tools so I can create the terrain and model I imagine. Like you suggested I did watch quite a lot of videos on youtube in advance. I tried getting an understanding of the things I would need, like different set of brushes, tools for making bases, materials for bases, different types of paints, etc. I also checked out different stores on the web, just to get an understanding of the different types of tools, materials and stuff you can get. I also have to say that I'm amazed by how far the hobby has come since I last played. Lots of the old models (especially the plastic ones) from the 90's really do look like a pile of shit by today's standards. Even the old metal models looks pretty sad if you compare them to the new plastic models.

Used to play 40k, been out of it for more than ten years. Local options for games dried up- only hobby store within an hour's drive shifted most of their floorspace to model trains and RC cars, and the people I'd been playing with slowly drifted apart as we went separate ways during college. In truth, it was a bit of a relief at the time. Life was getting stressful. I'd dove into my Imperial Guard a little too deep, plotting out a massive, troops-heavy list and grabbing up all the infantry boxes I could afford. Those unpainted 2.5k points of guardsmen never seemed to shrink, no matter how much work I put in, and it was only adding to the usual college frustrations. Now I'm older, more patient, and have been dabbling in mini painting for DnD. Without the weight of a giant box of unpainted plastic over my head, it's actually really soothing! And with Kill Team being much more popular than it was back in the days of 4th and 5th ed, I've been thinking more and more about throwing together a small force to take down to the LGS in my new town. Can't quite afford to pick up any new models at the moment- I was out of work before COVID-19 hit, and hiring seems to have all but stopped- and my old IG are stuck in a storage unit halfway across the country, but I've been going through a ton videos since starting self-isolation and am really looking forward to giving the game another go when things get a little more back to normal. Maybe I'll fall back out of it without a core of friends to start off playing with, but Kill Team seems like the perfect way to dip my toe in without committing too hard. Thanks for all your great advice, and entertaining videos!

I honestly am thinking of coming back just to paint again. I used to love painting but playing was a chore. I played Necromunda when it came out, Space Hulk, Epic 40k, Adeptus Titanicus, Warmaster, Blood Bowl, Mordheim (briefly), both WFB and W40k but lost the passion. By the end of that fuse, for two years I was still painting with regular customers, would build my army lists for both WFB and W40k- and never play again. I ended up working for Marvel, and just couldnt find the space to set up a paint station so found new painters for my customers that I trusted. I feel the need to paint again for fun -no customers- but dont have the room. Now Im spending my time watching the hobby's videos with envy lol. Maybe someday.

Short answer: Watch Uncle Atom. Last played 40k in 4th edition. Played some occasional different games (Song of Blades & Heroes, some miniature board games, etc.) but was mostly out of the hobby. Still read the 40k books and collected and read rules. Then came across your channel and that and Kill Team rekindled my interest. Thanks! And still using a bunch of my 10+ year old paints (some were dried up but most reconstituted with no problems). Does mean I can't use most paint apps to track my collection/paint schemes, though.

Casey Pierson there are plenty of board games based off the wargames. Check out the warhammer quest games.

This one hit real close. I used to play the 6th Edition fantasy battle, went to military (i live in country with mandatory service) and after that went to college. Few years after tried to get back in the game but it was 8th Edition back then. I had no intrest in rules or hobby back then. Started playing indie mini games, had few years of that and just in the end of last year i found out kill team and warcry. Now i have one fully painted kill team made from old minis, and starded few new projects. I’m having More fun in the hobby than ever.

Got back into warhammer after a 3 or 4 year break. All my paints apart from silver, gold excetera are fine luckily. Greatful for kill team being my return to the hobby as its exactly the sort of thing I wanted before taking a break from the hobby and now I can do all sorts of kill teams which is really fun as It saves me the trouble of picking only one army

I was last active in 40k back in 2002. I had to stop because university kicked into high gear, but I kept all my minis. I found my collection a month ago and with the help this channel and similar, I'm starting to get back into it. More recently, I've had a run at playing competitive magic. After 5 years, I've quit the magic scene. I stopped having fun, and my senses have finely tuned to those super competitive types that I cannot stand. I can see what you mean here, since I have no desire to get back into magic, even with friends of mine showing me new cards and new combinations. I have a feeling when I finish fixing up my minis, people are going to look at me funny for putting metal mordians on the table. Or my metal chaos terminators and ancient berserkers. But, hey, it was fun back in the day, and I really enjoyed making and painting minis even if I wasn't too good at the game part.

I tried to get back to the hobby at some point and it didn't take. I'll still paint once in a while, but I realised what I really like about painting miniatures is that I used to do it with a friend. We would take an afternoon, get together, sit at a table and paint while chatting. Now, when I'm by myself, I usually have something that I should do or want to do rather than painting.

I used to play 40k 3rd edition, haven’t played for 15 years (since I was 13yo) or whatever it is......... thanks to the first couple of Mortal Realms, and then watching your videos, and some others, I have just ordered my first Skaven Models and a Battletome. Starting small but thank you :)

I just opened a new Citadel paint tube I bought about two and a half years ago. It's still good to paint with because I never opened it and were stored well. I still have to keep some of the older paints I have since 2012 wet. Although, the Citadel Edge paints I've been using are still in in fine quality. Most of them I haven't much due to the certain armies I'm painting that are not the colour scheme I use for them. I might look at using them for newer projects I started.

30 year gap. I was 10, It was super expensive, the rules were too complicated (for me), it was hard to find people to help me learn to paint & play, never mind getting to somewhere I could even try. But i’m back now. This is my mid life crisis, big fast bikes are the norm for me & even (so called) fast cars are slow so, here we are, back once again to a more peaceful hobby where I can take my time, no deadlines, no BS, just me back to trying to paint minis like I thought I could 30 years ago (hahahaha) but having slightly more success now. Probably just made a noise for no reason as the vid is only 2:06 in but hay, #it. Keep it up bro. 👍🏼

I'm getting back in through an invitation from two friends to join them when they sit and paint, have beer and just chill, also I ended up buying the new battle sisters collectors army box since the store had an extra one, I might make it to my first Kill Team session tomorrow with a bit of luck (got some work that might get in the way). Still, this is largely what was missing when I tried the hobby the first time, community. Always been a fan of the over the top style of 40K though.

I left the hobby in about 2009. A bunch of things happened I move, I went back to school. Changed jobs, had a kid. And I really wasn't having fun with the hobby. Fast forward 2016, I'm getting back in the hobby. And I realized I left the hobby because I was playing with really awful people before my life upheaval. When I came back, I was left with really bad habits playing the games. I had to relearn everything. But I had to pay attention mostly to etiquette and another players feedback. It's been fun and I enjoy the player group, and my new life lessons.

Hi! I would like to suggest a NEW SUBJECT for a video, also mentioned in this one: How to integrate this hobby with your family (I don't mean your mother un law, but your partner, kids, nephew -although we know you are not an uncle-, etc...). Should we try to include oye kids into It? (we are not so young anymore...). Just to separate them from videogames&TV just for a few hours? To help them think differently with elements on a board game? Although your family hate the hobby itself? Some reflexions could be very interesting. Tks anyway in advance.

I've stashed all my Skaven minis and accessories when I became a student in the early 2000s. A couple of years ago I was glad to dig them out again when my old buddies and I went back to wargaming. Obviously AoS is completely alien to what WHFB used to be (no rank and file, dumbed down lore) so we took the indie road and went with The Ninth Age, which allows for the use of all our old and new minis and feels carefully balanced.

This video is all about me! Left the Hobby for nearly 20 years! I've used the GameFor app to find countless gaming stores in my recent travels. Most of these stores are "unverified" so I find the owner, show him/her how I found them with the app, then buy something because I'm a firm believer in "supporting my local hobby store" *pachow*...And yes, I am tubby and losing my hair!

I've actually never actually played the tabletop game, or really any Warhammer game, read the books, let alone bought a figure to paint it, but I've been binge-watching these painting videos/channels on YT and love reading about the Warhammer 40k universe in general. I think it would be a really cool hobby to get into, but I'm unsure about getting into it. Seems expensive and a bit tedious to set up, seeing all the paint sets and figures out there.

Good juxtaposition to your commentary on what part of the hobby people 'do'. My disappointment with GW and WHFB/AOS really pushed me away but I kept painting. I realized that I am more a painter than gamer. I still game but not like I used to.

Played 40k back in the day last played 2nd edition. 3rd had just came out when I drifted away. Hard to find people/shops near me. Working on getting back in with a few armys with the stuff I could find and Ebay . If i can supply a few players its easier to get a few friends to try it. Especially if they don't have to drop a few hundred to try it. Coming across your channel, some others, and still reading the black library books really makes me want to get back into it.

I think I'm one of those "friends" lol I just can't get the strength to pull the trigger. It's so daunting to trying to figure out all the new shit and then get discourage thinking, "Do I REALLY wanna spend all that money to get all the new books and models??? Really??" Haha... Good seeing you again, even if it's in a video buddy!

I haven't painted Miniatures in over 20 years, but in my garage I have a bunch of old metal Ral partha miniatures and a whole bunch of old ad&d and Ral partha and polly s paints (most of which probably need to be replaced) but I do want to get back into painting again! With your help and Sam lenz's helpful videos, along with some of the other great resources on KZitem, I think I can get in it and kick some butt. Any suggestions on getting back into the painting thing?

I got back in about 9-10 months ago for about 3 months then stopped once I moved. Like completely them randomly got back into it a month ago, I can see this becoming a thing. 3 months out of the year I'm fanatical. I think for me it's how long painting takes. I need a painting station as I have no space and just paint in my bed on a little keyboard table. Big advice, set up a small area where you can do the hobby and make it accessible. Do a bit here and there and put on a movie. Relax also.

If your paints are dry some can be salvaged using a dash off water, and a lot of elbow grease stirring. Recently got back into LotR SBG (or Middle Earth STB as it is now known), stripped some models and beautified them. Sadly i will not be able to properly get back into it as my job means I will spend the next 6 months in a tent.

It's been about 26 years for me, so long that I can't remember why I gave the hobby up, most likely exams but they did bulldoze my local Games Workshop around that time too. I was thinking of picking up the hobby again and going my OG (fantasy) however, AoS just leaves me cold so I'm thinking of not bothering now or look for a different game away from Warhammer.
