Here are some things I've thought of that might also help: To sum up in general, here's what separates players in terms of skill: A) How solid the player's fundamentals are B) How much fluency the player has with their character C) How well the player knows the specific matchup D) How skilled the player is at adaptation At the elite level, everyone basically has point A solidified to where they're pretty much even. Points B and C are why it helps to solo main, and point D only comes through playing real people as much as possible. Also, I brought up the plateau phase like it'll happen once and you'll never have to deal with it again. That's not usually the case. You could end up having multiple plateau periods, so it's important to know that whenever they come up, take some time to breathe, watch film, and try not to worry about it. You WILL get better. Self-improvement isn't always a straight line upwards. I hope this helps you guys!

I'm glad I watched this because right now I think I'm at what you called the "Plateau phase" I remember when I felt myself improving but now it feels as if I'm falling for things I shouldn't have. I find myself playing on autopilot and I'm currently working to stop that. I'm still having fun with my mains but it feels that I'm losing because a botched recovery, or loss of my jump off stage, or just mashing air dodge whenever someone knocks me into the air. I'm going to have some people in the discord server I'm in help me by inviting them to an arena and help them give me tips

I’m legally blind and I just started playing Smash a few months ago and mg friend has been coaching me and it’s sooooooo hard to learn smash because I’m legally blind it took me like I dunno how long to actually figure out how to not fall off stage but I main Ness and other characters I really enjoy are Ganon and just recently Boswer. This is my first Smash game but it’s really fun!! Thanks for your video I’m probably somewhere near phase 3 but my friend has had way more experience with this game and previous Smash games so he’s been awesome coaching me even though it’s tough for me. Again this was a great video!! I thought it was really good!!

Wow. These tips were REALLY helpful. Well, my Training was with Joker, Dark Pit, Blue Yoshi and Falco at Palutena's Temple when I first picked up Ultimate and tested out all four of them. But when I noticed that I was losing my touch very badly with these characters, I stopped using them altogether. Then in December, this is where I finally found my one true main in the one-winged angel, Sephiroth after all this time. I made my own training schedule as soon as I got the one-winged angel and I practiced with him Monday-Sunday nonstop each and every day at Palutena's Temple until I grew comfortable with him and his attacks. Thanks to all of that special, nonstop, intense practicing, I'm now in full, complete control over my new 2020-2021 main. Sephiroth has been leading me to victory in brand new ways like never before and I've connected with him on a much more deeper level than with my ex-mains. I narrowed down the characters, mainly Joker, Blue Yoshi, Falco and Dark Pit until I found my forever main. However, I didn't have much luck in using my four mains because they weren't cutting it for me anymore so it took me MANY months to actually find my forever main. So, I thought, 'when is my true main EVER going to come to me?' Then, in December 2020, my new main FINALLY came to me and he's the only one I stick with to do my daily battling in both Training and Smash Mode. When he was first revealed, Sephiroth spoke to me in my head, saying, 'I choose you to control me and lead me on the path of victory, instead of these four pathetic characters you call 'mains'. After watching his epic Ultimate trailer, I ditched all four of my mains for the one-winged newcomer instantly in less than five seconds. With Sephiroth, I've formed a much deeper understanding of my main. The more I spent time with him and playing with him, the more my connection with the one-winged angel grew and he really did connect with me the most than my other mains on a much deeper level. I have to say, Sephiroth is making me really happy ever since I got him as an early Chistmas present on Sunday, December 20th, 2020 after I completed the Sephiroth Challenge. Thanks to me practicing in Training and playing with CPUs nonstop in both Smash Mode and Tourney, I've adapted to my own creative playstyle: defense and offense. I've adapted quite quickly to Sephiroth's tilts, Smash Attacks, aerials and special moves. Plus, I learned how to use Sephiroth instantly by just sticking with him all the time and not picking another character to use except him. He was even the most easiest character for me to master than Dark Pit, Joker, Falco and Yoshi. I mastered Sephiroth in less than five seconds thanks to all of that special, intense training at Palutena's Temple. Now I can easily pull off Perfect Shields, Meteor Smashes and even Shield Breaks with Sephiroth in less than a minute. Sephiroth is paired up with his Legend Spirit Sirius and his Supports, Karel and Aerith. He's currently my most powerful main in Ultimate. It was originally Joker with Sirius, Elise and Karel. But I think Sirius, Aerith and Karel are better suited for Sephiroth. Plus Sirius and Karel give the one-winged angel double the strength of Weapon Attack Up, making him OP like crazy while Aerith heals his damage so Sephiroth currently is a force to be reckoned with.

Both the plateau phase and the competitive phase are pretty much interchangeable. Phase three is just a way to visualize yourself feeling frustrated when you're not improving as much as you'd like whereas phase four is being able to move past the frustrations and understanding that getting better is a process. The main thing to think about during both situations is just to remember that even though it takes work to get good, it's still a game where having fun should be your first priority. Remember, so long as you continue playing, you're moving in the right direction.

Are you sure you need a main right now? The most important thing is to have fun, and if none of the characters are fun right now, I'd suggest either doing free for alls or playing against CPU's for the time being. It helped me out, at least.

@@dazeen9591 "Good" is subjective. Let me tell you a secret. The "best" players enjoy the process, even when they lose. If you're trying to be competitive, it make take a couple thousand hours. I once heard someone say, "We were all beginners at 700 hours." It's a long road. Don't feel like you need to be good right now. Again, I really want to emphasize that CPU's and FFA's can help you develop without the pressure of winning 1v1s with real people. No johns. Just take it slow and try to have fun. That's the most important part.

Well, since we're all at the campfire... My last console was a 64, I didn't enjoy videogames seriously for over a decade, I bought the switch due to the new lifestyle after the pandemic. And Smash ultimate seems to be the most difficult game I've ever tried, from past to present day. Adapting to this game gen sure is hard (not only in fighting games btw), but Smash is insanely fast for me, you don't have more than a few frames to take a decision... I'm in the third phase, I almost give up, I've spent hundreds of hours practicing with my main/sec to have fun with my new online friends and, as you may expect, suck in the worst way possible. Thank you, I didn't need more techniques and combos, but rather an advise from an experienced fighter.
@redgerran

Just remember that there will always be more plateaus down the line, and there will always be players who can just plain beat you. This is a super competitive game with lots of people having played for thousands of hours already. So long as you're working hard, though, you're getting better and moving in the right direction. 🙂

I wanted to use Jigglypuff as my main and I have often trained with them and I have won many matches as Jigglypuff but they were often a close call, were as King K.
