In UE5 in the blendspace asset there is an Analysis Section this can be used to essentially fix the foot placement according to the speed. Would that have worked for you? Or the solution have some shortcomings that breaks the game?

Yeah, stylized graphics can cover a lot of areas, but animation is one of those things that can't really be simplified all that much, especially the main character animation as that's what the player will be seeing 100% of the time. Those little touches you added help a lot, and those are good examples of things I'm always thinking about as I'm working on my game as well. Looking forward to seeing how this game progresses!

i disagree that it can be simplified. one way this can be achieved is by using intentionally uninterpolated keyframes so that you get the stop-motion effect. This style eliminates the need for lots of transitions. another way is by leaning on simple procedural systems, like in overgrowth (which the author has given a talk on, if youre interested)

@@noxabellus I wouldn't really call uninterpolated keyframes the same as "simplifying" animation though. Stylized for sure, but simplified? It's arguably less simple because in order to make it look good, you have to compensate for the lack of interpolation by putting extra effort into making each frame look great since they are on the screen longer. It's one of those things that makes or breaks CG in anime because they'll typically limit it to 12FPS to match most of the hand-drawn scenes, but unless they make sure the CG animation is REALLY good (like a lot of Studio Orange's stuff), then it comes out terribly (Berserk 2016/2017 for something easy to pick on).

@@SkylerFoxx-GameDev I don't think it requires any more effort. Bad key frames are bad key frames. And like I said, it eliminates a whole class of secondary animation, so even if it does require a bit more effort up front, it's still a big savings in work over all

Thanks for the kind words! I've been making these devlogs for only a few months now and I've seen steady growth, so I'll keep plugging away!

Some great tips, thanks! Was just struggling with making that slidey-ness go away and I wouldn't have thought of that. 👍

Great tips for improving anims! And cool game! Just to help out ppl, you can set slomo time in bp (set dilation time, something like that) on a key so you dont have to type that command for slow mo

Very helpful info. I like to use mixamo to get my animations and models a base to start before getting my actual assets and animations into the game and always noticed they have start and end animations to their locomotion, but never used them. Seeing the differences in your game has convinced me to start incorporating those so thanks!

Great video, Great advice but the mixamo run animation on the default doesn't look great to be honest Take my comment with a grain of salt, but I have seen that animation many times in "shitty games", seeing it here doesn't sit right with me
