Requested by quite a few Subscribers now over on my Discord Server, I've began to compile some tutorials specific to using VATSIM including what to say and how to read it back.
Those of you who regularly tune in to the channel and join me during Live Streams know I ALWAYS use VATSIM for flights on MSFS and have a fantastic experience from it.
I've explained it as best as I understand it - and without complicating anything either... therefore, this is the first in a Mini Series I will be producing that will attempt to explain as much as possible to help you get started!
I hope you find the video useful - if you do, give it a Like and while you're here - if you're new to the channel I'd love it if you clicked Subscribe too!
For the Tutorial we are using Manchester Airport EGCC by Macco Simulations - if you want to purchase it, you can find it here:
maccosim.com/product/egcc-man...
It's exceptionally good for using VATSIM as you'll see in the tutorial as the stand numbers are visible which makes it super easy to see what stand you are at!
Let me know how you get on in the comments below - and keep your eye open for some other tutorials coming soon here on the channel.

Find lots of information about VATSIM here:
vatsim.net
Some Points:
- Prepare a flight plan in advance and make sure the routes are valid for the current AIRACs (difficult on SimBrief without paying for Navi)
- Listen to some other pilots to hear what they are saying/reading back
- Have a Pen & Paper handy to record information like cleared route and squawk (transponder code)
- VATSIM works top down, so if Clearance Delivery is not online for your IFR clearance, obtain it from Tower... if they are not online, use the next one up that is covering the airport you are at
- If it's busy, you might be told you will get "Clearance via PDC"... that means the controller will send you a message inside vPilot with all your information inside
- Unicom and No Controllers? File the plan on vPilot and set Transponder as 2000 or 2200 for IFR - then skip to the next tutorial! Tune into 122.800
For US Users:
It sounds as though this step for US Users in VATSIM might be done on PDC only - so when you file your flight plan, controllers will send you clearance via Private Message directly - so then you just set your XPDR with the squawk and when ready request your Pushback and Start 👍
What if you don't have scenery that tells you what stand you are at?
When you select the stand on the World Map to spawn at - make sure you ALSO check the ground parking/stand charts for that airport - as the sim usually has wrong stands labelled. Find the position on the charts and write that one down! 👍
