When adding a saturator to the drop drums and cranking up the drive, how does it not distort the living fuck out of the kick? lol im trying to apply these same concepts and my stuff sounds like shit. I can choose waveshaper instead of digital clip and it doesnt distort but is that achieving the same effect?

Gotta give the two limiters on the master bus trick a go. Thanks man! I also disable high quality mode on the saturator and make sure there's no oversampling with my clippers and limiters. That way you get a nice brick of audio and your levels won't go higher than where the gain is set. Disabling true peak limiting will help to preserve transients.

instead of limiting the overall master together causing distortion, it is a better practice using bus mastering. separating all of the frequency ranges and sending them to their own limiter , instead of sending all of the lows, mids and highs to one master channel fighting each other and being crowded, separate the frequency ranges by creating a pre-master track and making separate send busses for the lows, mids, highs and drums. by sending all of the frequencies separately to their own bus and having their own limiter, you're giving them their own personal space to become even louder. you'll have a way cleaner mix and an easier master.
@stormblessed9455
2 жыл бұрын
How is this accomplished? I don't know of a way to separate sounds by frequency. Surely it's not just a combination of low and high pass filters is it?
@kowloonbroadcast
Жыл бұрын
@@stormblessed9455actually, it’s exactly filtering. you can create them manually with basic filtering tools that come with your DAW, you also may use some 3rd party solutions, such as Multiband by Blue Mangoo that designed specifically for the freq splitting or use other multiband processors (saturators/compressors/etc), such as FAC’s Bandit but exclusively the part that splits audio with no actual compression/saturation applied and send the resulting signal out to 3 separate groups/auxs/buses for further processing. basically all of these options provide frequency splitting using filtering and Q-adjustments to dial in for avoiding phase-related issues. in regards of slopes and cross-points: 6db is the most phase-distortion-free slope to use for that purposes, 12db is the one that’s mostly-good-enough option with the phase shift and distortion low enough not to cause any issues, higher - such as 18db/24db and above will most likely cause problems at the frequencies of the cross-points.
@kowloonbroadcast
Жыл бұрын
@zufi422 at the same time, i’ve got a question for you - how do you treat the resulting output signal (overall master output after 3 separate limiters) clipping caused by overlapped signal at the cross-points. say, you split the audio at the premaster stage into 3 bands - filtered low/mid/high with 6db/12db slope, applied a limiter to each one of them and sent the buses to output - there’ll certainly be ovelaps in 3 signals that will cause the output to the level above digital zero. i wonder how you address this particular issue. ‘cause the overall concept makes sense judging on how multiband compressor usually adds clarity to the mastering chain, i can see why there’s a point in using “multiband limiter”, but as of now, i can see several ways to tame the resulting clipping, so i wonder what did you find to be the best practice in regards to this technique yourself?

Use less drive. Don’t look at someone else’s “numbers” or settings and think that copying them over to your track is a good move. Every track/song will be different. - If your serious about improving the objective quality of your music production then I highly recommend getting a book on the subject of mixing (amazon etc)… it will cover multiple interlocking topics that will at the very least expose you to the right terms and point you in the right direction (KZitem) if you still have further questions. Good luck.
