Congratulations on graduating from Pharm School! I'm a college freshman and I started college with the idea that I wanted to be a pharmacist. However, one of my professors scared me away from the career, but after watching this I feel better about my decision!

Shit! Me to! I talked to one college teacher in fire careers like a fire fighter but than I was like it’s a boring job the schooling is boring and just sitting around for long time like a “dumb” job no brain effort job 😂 he said what do I wanna do than and I said pharmacist I get to still help ppl but not a dr that sees sick ppl like a dr in a hospital. I don’t wanna tough sick ppl 😂 anyways professor was like ha! That’s not a real job ur family won’t take u serious that a lazy job . And the whole family won’t take me serious like I will b working at cvs or same place someone go buys hot Cheetos really? Hurt me so I gave up that thought of being a pharmacist but I got inspired again watching this vid! I went to college ASAP after high school for 2 years trying to get my associates degree but than stopped going kuz I got so lost and I didn’t know wer I wanted to go and what degree to get .

I am a pharmacist. I think what is most important that you should tell everybody about is that currently there are too many pharmacy schools. Many graduates will have a difficult time finding a job and may have to relocate. Many pharmacies are not hiring full time (at least not 40 hours a week) and the pay and benefits are actually decreasing. I hate to be the one to bring bad news but it is something to consider before spending lots of money, time and effort to finish the pharmacy program. Once you are in pharmacy school, you really do not have to worry about grades unless you plan on doing clinical residency. If you will work retail, which most do, nobody will ever ask you what grades you got. All anybody cares about is if you are licensed.

Good luck on the naplex. I would not recommend the pronto cards if you plan to be licensed in other states beside Texas. My advice as a new practitioner 2010 grad is apply early, don't wait until the due date, maybe apply at least 2 months ahead. some programs are rolling admission meaning they admit as they go so later dates have fewer spots because they offer and students sent in their acceptance letter and even if they are not you still get 1st pick of interview dates and most likely hear back sooner for your acceptance. Volunteerism is also important or sub for work experience if it's hard to find a tech job, undergrad I helped at the free medical clinic and local hospital. Also be up to date with current events in pharmacy or healthcare you may get questions or schools have essay portion during the interview day. And residencies are another talk...best of luck!

Thank you sooo much for this video. I admire you so much! I'm 18, and I believe nothing more than that pharmacy is for me! I'm a planner, and I honestly worry so much about whether or not I'll get into pharmacy school. I started college my junior year of high school and graduated with my hs diploma and AA together. I happened to take a few of the prerequisite courses for pharmacy school during that time, but I didn't know that they were prerequisites then. Since I had so much on my plate, my grades were somewhat affected. I hope they don't criticize people too much for retaking a few courses (I got a few Cs). Since the pharmacy schools I'll be applying to in FL only really require the pre-reqs (and an AA for UF), I thought I'd stay at my local community college to save money. However, I'm now considering transferring into a pre-pharmacy track/bachelors program at another university in town (Florida Internat'l Uni.) so I can hopefully get more hands-on and involved in the pharmacy community. What's your opinion? I also volunteer in the pharmacy at a hospital but don't do much other than pick up phone calls and some paper work. Also, I've never had a job so is there anything else that might help me stick out from the rest? Sorry for such a long comment and thank you in advance!

Cheryll Garcia You can work as technician as well but volunteering helps you get connections for recommendation letters from pharmacist and trust me you're learning more than others by volunteering. Knowing their system and how they work is important. I think going to community college is great! Saving money and getting all the pre-requisites done. Some school require upper level classes such as biochem and community college does not have that. So you need to read more into the school you're wanting to apply to. GOOD LUCK!

In my opinion the best answer to having a low PCAT score even if you scored lower on your second time. "Pharmacy is about accuracy, a simple miscalculation in dose could lead to death or severly harming a patient. The PCAT in my opinion is not a best judgment of a pharmacy applicant's abilities. The test is graded about 3-5 times a year, there are many different students taking the exam at different times of that individual year. How can a test averaged at those specific times of the year be a true determinant of me getting through pharmacy school or being a good applicant? Pharmacy is about accuracy and the PCAT in my opinion is not an accurate test of my ability to be a good applicant due to the inaccuracy of the test." FYI I scored a 29 overall my first time and a 21 on my second time. Make sure to point out your highest averaged scores in individual subjects like math and science, usually pharmacy students do worse on the verbal portion of the exam making their average go down. I used this answer on why they asked me, "Why did you score so low and even lower your second time". I also got accepted to many high ranking pharmacy schools. Make sure to relate your answers specifically to pharmacy. (just a tip)

Hi Jen. Congrats on getting this far in the pharmacy program. I would strongly recommend for potential future pharmacy hopefuls to research the job market before deciding to invest 6 years and a lot of tuition money. In the east and west coast the available positions for pharmacists have gone down sharply. There are very few jobs out there and those that finish school often find that they have to leave the state to obtain a job. The large retail chains (CVS, Rite Aid, Daune Reade) are very well aware of this and use it to their advantage. Pharmacists working in chains are made to work very hard and job satisfaction has plummeted. Do not believe what the professors tell you about the professions..mainly that as the population ages the demand for pharmacists will increase greatly. Many new pharmacy schools have opened up in the last 10 years flooding the market with pharmacists. I work in a hospital and my boss recently showed me a stack of resume's 2 inch high of recent grads looking for work. Those that we hire are through an agency only....that means they don't get vacation time, health benefits or any other benefits. Most grads end up working at a retail pharmacy....those that work in retail pharmacy have very little time to consult patients and most of their time is spent on the phone with doctors to verify orders or insurance companies. There are many blogs of pharmacists who are very unhappy with their decision. Of course there are many happy pharmacists...but they are the minority. Here is a thread of pharmacy job outlook: www.studentdoctor.net/2010/05/sdn-reports-pharmacist-job-outlook/?replytocom=9348#respond

It's funny. I've been subscribed forever and just now watching this video. My 4th year rotations are starting this May, so I'm really excited and look forward to it. Just wanted to mention that dentistry was also my other career option I was thinking about. ^_^

Congratulations on almost being done with Pharmacy school!! This video is extremely helpful! I am a first year completing my undergrad and my dream job is to become a pharmacist. My question to you is would it beneficial to major in bio, chem, or something science related to get into pharm school or is it just important to complete the pre requisites?

What if you had 2 choices: a top 10 school according to US News & World Report or a 75 ranking school that you are more comfortable with and like the curriculum/environment more?

Man! I wish I can see this video when Im back in freshman. I chose a hard major, and had a not the worst but above ave GPA. With the major, I study my butt off, and I cannot do a lot of extra curricular activities. So, consider a well suited major that you can get a balance life.

+Samadhi Perera Good for you. In my country pharmacists don't earn that much compared to other countries that's why a lot of them chooses to work abroad. Pharmacy is tough but if you love what you're doing you'll be fine. Good luck to you!

In USA, it's a minimum of 6 years for a 2+4 program, but most get their bachelor degree, then pharmD so it's typical 8 years in USA.

Some of the information you mention is not accurate.I think you should mention that some pharmacy schools do NOT let students really retake classes. That means repeating the year and more than once, you are dropped out. Or you just automatically get dropped out without retaking depending on the school's decision.
