I think something that could be added is to not worry about rejection too much. You can apply many years in a row if you don’t get in the first time. Enlisting and applying is also an option. Long story short, if you want to go to an academy, you can get yourself in to an academy, even if you take the long road. Great tips and great video!

This was really good. I don't think everyone understands that the application process is an 18 month commitment. There are some nuances regarding the competitiveness of your slate that people form NC, TX, FL, DC and a few other states need to be aware of ( slots are limited by nomination, and those states are very competitive due to the number of bases which = candidates). I highly recommend checking out the Service Academy forums and doing your research. It's a long process, and pretty stressful, but my daughter is USMA class of 24. Here's the other thing - if you're a parent - be supportive, but don't own the process - this is a tough road, and your child has to want it badly enough to put in the work because it's not going to get easier.

I also am a 4 year band student and am the VP of the financial club. I was in a bunch of clubs sophomore year(model UN, chess club, ski club, political club etc) but most got shut down due to covid. Act scores are around like a 27. I go to one of the best public schools in like the country so I’m not worried about my grades and such. They won’t even let us have our class ranks lol. I also do a lot of volunteering and such. I am the coach of a youth lacrosse program. Also lifeguard over the summer. Is there anything else I should be doing to get accepted???

@SpooderOfficial
Жыл бұрын
What's your GPA right now? If it's REALLY bad then I'd encourage you to take some AP and honors courses. I know it may be tough but it will definitely boost your (weighted) GPA and look good on your transcript. Take stuff like AP Calculus, AP History, AP Psych, etc. and try to slide in some honors classes if possible as well. Just try to shoot for the 3.8+ weighted GPA range. Keep up with the idea of extracurriculars though. Sports, volunteer work, and ESPECIALLY leadership positions (team captain, president of a club, leader of an instrument section/being a drum major in band etc.) Leadership positions are the most important considering that the academy is prepping you to lead a bunch of enlisted sailors. Generally, you are in luck considering that colleges tend to not take your freshman year transcript too seriously and focus on your sophomore, junior, and senior year transcripts more. Try to grind out your SAT as well when the time finally comes. Study HARD. A minimum score on your SAT to shoot for is around 1350, but it can slide a little bit lower if you have outstanding extracurriculars. Also, you might want to consider going to the Naval Academy Summer Seminar program when you're a rising senior next year, keep up the grades and write a decent essay and you can get in. Consider getting a job over that summer that has the traits of a leader or are a bit more complex that what an average high school kid would do (stuff like being a lifeguard generally look better than a burger flipper or shelve stocker.) Good luck!! Hope this helps :)

Do you know about how the admissions process differs for athletes? I know that almost everyone applying plays sports, but I more so mean the ones who have the opportunity to commit to play their sport at the academy. For example, I know that a good amount of the Naval baseball team verbally committed to play at the academy during their junior year. How does committing change your admissions process? Thanks!
@navalaviation
4 жыл бұрын
I didn't really talk about it as much because it should theoretically be the same. However, realistically recruitment gives a huge boost to a candidate to a pretty high percentage of acceptance. Athletes won't get recruited unless they're in good academic standing in high school first. The Academies do happen to favor recruited athletes in terms of getting a congressional nomination and letters of appointment in my experience. Much better chances than if you are not a recruited athlete. But this does nottake away from the GPA and test score requirements a candidate must have to being considered to be at the Academy. Hope this helps

I volunteered a lot at the local pet shelter, my church as a sunday school teacher, and also a high school ministry student body. Now I did a lot more than these but these are what I was primarily known for in high school and most of them came out of just being interested in something I enjoyed and just did it. IT really isn't as difficult as it appears to be. For example, I loved pets but my parents wouldn't let me have one so I resolved to just walking dogs at the local pet shelter. I love kids and seeing them debate one another so I volunteered at my high school's debate coaching program for younger kids. I took AP Euro Sophomore year. AP Bio, AP Eng, and AP USH Junior Year. And AP Gov, AP Econ Micro and Macro, and AP Statistics senior year. Now I wouldn't strive for my track bcz you need to build your own track based on how good of a student you are and how much you can take. You would be in a much better standing if you can get through more APs than I did in hs but if you get Cs in all of them, you'll have a bad transcript to turn in at the end of the day. So it requires a balance specificalled defined by you.

I can't answer most of this as I'm still in highschool myself, but ROTC in college and the Naval Academy are very different experiences. The main reason I would like to attend USNA or any of the other service academies is due to the inability for me to play any sports while at their schools. However, USNA has the sports built into your program so you're able to play if you can get recruit or walk on to the team. It is not set in stone that you won't be able to do a sport and ROTC, but of all the colleges I've toured and visited in Georgia, not a single one of the cadets in any ROTC program did an official sport for the school. This means that they participated in club sports, but did not participate for NCAA level events.

@chronos401
4 жыл бұрын
One of my relatives is in West Point right now. He did not do JROTC in High School. Not claiming he's typical. Suggest asking your school's college counselor or West Point's Regional Admission Commander (info is on their website) if they can find and give you the profile (extracurricular activities, SAT scores, etc) of the most recent entering class. The most important thing is acquiring a nomination. You can't get in without one. Each US Senator, each US Representative, and the VPOTUS are limited to having five nominations attending each academy at one time. Every year usually one of their allocated positions becomes vacant, they will submit 10 nominees to fill it. Of those not chosen for these vacancies, the Service Secretary and Academy Superintendent will select 200 or so to be their nominees. There are more opportunities from others if one is enlisted, ROTC, or a child of a military careerist or a disabled/deceased veteran. Suggest researching how competitive it is to get a nomination from your Senators and Representative. Perhaps becoming a Congressional Page or Intern for one or more of them for a short time will improve your chances and will look good on your resume. For West Point admission, academics count for approx. 60%, leadership potential for approx. 30%, and physical fitness approx. 10%. It's best to try for leadership positions in sports, clubs, yearbook, school newspaper, and/or community activities. Create your own opportunities if necessary. That's what my relative did. This academy also likes to see Eagle Scouts and Boys State (if a guy) or Girls State (if a gal). Oddly, they view the latter two as equivalent to the first one even though they take a fraction of the time and effort. Warning: The service academies practice admission discrimination. They select women and nonwhites with lower qualifications over white males with higher ones. They do the same for very talented athletes. Everyone, but especially white males, should consider having backup college choices. If you're offered USMAPS, take it. Upon successful completion of this, it's automatic entry into West Point.

How you acquire citizenship is irrelevant (Birth in the us, by blood, & naturalization). If youre goal is to fly aircraft in a military setting the GAF still has extremely cool and advanced planes. I think its fair to assume that youre goal is to fly jets in which that case germany has the Tornado F3, the Eurofighter Typhoon, and they are actively acquiring the f-35. Per the USNA's site, they accept up to 60 international students for each class. Graduates do not receive a commission in the US military but return to their home country to fulfill obligated service. Per the Navy OCS' site, they accept and commission foreigners with permanent residency (Green card holders). This group can enlist then apply for citizenship. Once granted, they can apply for a commissioning program. Every year, the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program grants a limited number of expedited green cards to foreigners whose countries have a low immigration rate to the US. Germany is on this list. The applicant must be a high school graduate or its equivalent or have qualifying work experience. Most US officer programs including naval aviator need a security clearance which requires citizenship. Suggest searching for the requirements for a green card. The DIV lottery might be the fastest route, but I don't know how competitive it is. Once that's obtained, consider enlisting then immediately apply for citizenship. Once granted, then you'll be eligible for USNA, OCS, or Navy ROTC. Suggest contacting a Navy Officer recruiter to check if there are other options available.

Yes definitely! Just talk to the admissions office about how you can get a congressional nomination and everything else should be the same as any other applicant. Just apply online!
