As someone that works at a computer screen 10+ hours a day, I'd strongly suggest lifting the screen up so that the center of the screen is at the same level as your nose. You don't look down as much so you aren't bending you neck. So the doc here needs to have his screen a good 8 inches higher. In the 1990s, they actually made workstations that had the monitor down below desk height which were terrible.
@DoctorEyeHealth

Thank you! Yes, I usually have my screen at that height too, it is usually best to have it around the middle. Sadly I just couldn’t adjust my chair height for the video demonstration.

The biggest cause of eye strain for me is most LED and most fluorescent lighting. I must spend $15 -$25/ light bulb now, in order to get lighting close to as eye friendly as the old incandescent bulbs (tungsten or halogen, less than $2 each). I have to special order LED's or CFL's that don't flicker, and have a CRI of 95+. Two hours trying to work or read without daylight or a specialized bulb, gives me a migraine and my vision is toast. I'm all about reducing energy consumption. It's a disability access problem, though, to ban the sale of less efficient light bulbs that are kinder to folks with health conditions exacerbated by bad newer lighting. (Lupus, epilepsy, migraines, etc.) I do save lots of energy in other ways.

@DoctorEyeHealth
3 жыл бұрын
The idea of how pupils shrink in bright light is correct. I personally don't find that reasoning makes much sense unless you work in a dark room as well. Ideally, you should have plenty of room lighting to help constrict the pupils. Otherwise, the dark mode should help reduce blue light exposure and help with anyone who has problems with bright lights. Great question though.

There's a bunch of people that scream that blue light's the devil and causes cancer and all this stupid stuff. It's a lot of conflicting opinion between studies, but it's neat that someone for once says "Stop putting your face in the screen" rather than try to sell glasses to people that might not even work. With that said you should totally do a video down the line on VR and the eyes. It'd probably be pretty useful considering most of us have a 2 lb monitor strapped to our faces for 8 hours straight.

5:45 Side note on Dark Mode: Dark mode will only reduce the energy consumption of your display if your phone uses a screen panel that's made with OLED technology. This works because the screen is basically made up of a billion tiny lights and thus the more areas are frequently black, the more of the LEDs are going to be turned off instead of having to turn on to display a colour. This works best if your phone's UI features a "total dark mode" let's call it that. The blacker the image, the less power it uses, as grey tones are still not quite optimal. This however does not work on phones with an LCD screen as on LCD screens, the image is produced by manipulating liquid crystals and lit up from behind by a dedicated backlight. For that reason you're going to notice that blacks aren't really blacks and more of a deep grey colour. The screen still has to apply energy to areas that are meant to be completely black and hence cannot save power on those areas.

Quick question: I wear glasses every day and when I go out I wear coloured contacts with 0 diopters for the fun of it. When I come home to work at the PC, I can't read text so well on the screen. Apparently the contacts which definitely are without prescription (Air Optix Colour) impede the function of my glasses on my closer field of vision. How is this possible? Near-sighted, with some astigmatism. Are the contacts messing with the cylinder value of my glasses' lenses?
