Goosegrass is a warm-season annual weed that will create discolored clumps of grass in lawns and take nutrients away from more desirable plants.
Goosegrass is a dark-green weed with whitish coloration at the base of the plant. It grows from a central crown, growing in a rosette shape.
The leaf blades can grow up to 8 inches in length and ⅓ of an inch in width. Both surfaces of the leaves are smooth without hairs. Leaves growing closer to the base may be slightly hairy.
When goosegrass flowers, each plant will form two to seven finger-like spikes that will eventually produce seeds.
Goosegrass is a warm-season annual that germinates in spring when soil temperatures warm to 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This weed grows well in compact, wet soil or in areas with thin turf cover. Look out for these weeds growing in tufts that look like spread-out fingers.
Common sites where goosegrass is known to occur include but are not limited to, agricultural fields, landscaped areas, roadsides, railroad tracks, grazing pastures, athletic fields, golf courses, and other disturbed areas.
To eliminate Goosegrass on commercial or residential properties, use a selective, post-emergent herbicide that’s labeled not to injure your property’s turfgrass.
We recommend you check out Expel Turf Herbicide. Expel is a Sulfentrazone-based product used to control a variety of weed species on cool-season and warm-season turf.
To treat goosegrass growing in cool-season lawns, mix the labeled rate of 4 to 8 fluid ounces of the product into 10 gallons of water to apply over 1 acre.
To treat goosegrass growing in warm-season lawns, mix the labeled rate of 8 to 12 fluid ounces of the product into 10 gallons of water to apply over 1 acre.
Due to this product’s high-volume applications, high-capacity equipment like a spray rig may be necessary. Once your product is thoroughly mixed, broadcast your solution evenly over the area.
When applied properly, affected weeds will yellow and begin to die. Conduct followup applications as necessary. A reapplication with Expel may be made after 35 days.
Applications are most effective when plants are newly emerged before flower formation.
Goosegrass is an annual weed that grows from seed every season, so the best way to prevent it is by applying a pre-emergent herbicide like Barricade. Barricade Granular Pre-Emergent Herbicide will form a chemical barrier in your soil that will prevent weed seeds from sprouting and emerging. Depending on your turf grass species, you’ll apply 1.5 to 4 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet. After application, water in the product with at least half an inch of water. Make an application in the fall to stop seeds from germinating in spring. An additional application may be made after 6 months for year-round weed prevention.
In addition to pre-emergent herbicides, we also recommend you promote the health of your turf to reduce the conducive conditions that allow weeds and disease to take hold.
Mow your grass at proper intervals to maintain a thick growing density. A lawn dense with taller trimmed grass is better able to choke out weeds and prevent them from establishing.
Reduce the shade cast on your lawn by trimming overgrown shrubbery and tree branches, rake away leaf litter and pick up any debris, and employ a proper watering schedule to provide the local grass with enough water to strengthen its roots, but not so much that will encourage weeds. Many grasses require 1 inch of water every week. Apply the water all at once in the morning so it has time to seep into the ground without evaporating in the sun.
