1. Do not focus too much on breath retention times, it's not really important in the longterm. 2. ALWAYS do breathing while sitting or lying on the ground. 3. 100% air go in, 75% of air go out. It's normal to inhale more air than exhale. *4. DO NOT force it. It is not workout, forceful muscle chest expanding do not needed.* 5. Try returning to online course and doing it again from very beginning. 6. Don't hold the final inbreath for too long. It's not about that. 7. Do not treat it like calisthenics routine. Main work is in focus and concentration on the breath, like meditation, not power breathing and lung exercise. 8. Vary it, do it in various times, with various music OR in complete silence. *9. Once you get used to it, try to listen to your feelings, and do number of breaths you feel saturated best. It may be more or less, no matter. Figure out what works best for yourself.*

Very gentle and caring soul. Easy to listen to, thanks for the clarification on the exhale. My question is how wedded is the breathing to the ice shower/bath? Must the breathing always precede the shower? Can you do them farther a part, say hours in the same day? All the instructions I have heard from Wim say to step into the shower after the breath hold on the third round. Your notes say not to get into water afterward.
@richrealign
4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. As modalities they are indeed totally separate, but breathing before cold exposure makes cold exposure a little easier, people find. The instructions Wim is talking about are from a specific step in the cold exposure journey, and isn't referring to doing the actual breathing technique beforehand, as far as I'm aware. My tips are from a general safety point of view, in line with the method's guidelines, to avoid people holding their breath underwater, not under the shower. I hope that helps!

So, as I understand it...you start with the breathing technique for a week or so, then add gradual exposure to cold, whether its showers or outside, for a week or so, and then add the meditation. Wim speaks about accessing autonomic nervous system for the ability to control autoimmune diseases...how do you do that? Is it a function of meditation and thinking deeply about allowing your body to fix itself? I would love an explanation about this aspect of the method. Thank-you for a deeper clarification.

@richrealign

Sounds like you may be doing it a little too intensely...can that be? For sure deep breathing can feel like work, but so many out there do it way too forcefully, and as I say in the video, it's counterproductive and needlessly tiring. I'd need more info, but if your nose closes up when you start, it could be that you've got some issue there too - it might be worth asking your doctor and see what they say. Hope that helps!

Thanks for posting! I did the ten week course, and I've experienced amazing benefits from the practice,;but, my breath retention times are rarely over a minute. I've been practicing daily for about 8 months now. I'm really not sure why I'm not progressing. I feel super oxygenated, but, my lung capacity never expands. Also, I've never experienced any of the trippy chakra stuff Wim talks about (and I'd like to because I hear from some it can be kind of therapeutic to "trip"). Any tips?

hey man, that's pretty strange. if you don't feel like you're making any progress with the retention times then maybe it's worth sitting down with an instructor who can check out your technique, although if you are getting the benefits then maybe the retention times aren't the focus. get in touch at rich@re-align for more help if you like.

@richrealign
3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a long time! I've rarely hit that, and what I've found is that we all have a different natural lung capacity, and for many reasons. A small man I know hit at least that first time he tried it, I was really surprised. What's worked best for me over the years is not focusing on the retention times too much, but more on how you feel when holding that breath - hopefully you can let go and find some nice peace and inner stillness, that (for me) is what it's there for. Hope that helps!
@spiritlevelstudios

My times were dropping when inhaling 100%. It felt way too forced and exhausting. I tried 80% and was much more relaxed about it all and my retention increased by 1 minute. So that was nice. But, I have not noticed any benefits after doing the basic method every morning for about a month. I only do 1 round, but I have tried doing 2 and it's just the same. The cold is nice afterwards, but the breathing has no effect during or after. I normally do about 38 inhales. Maybe I need to try going up to around 60 or something.
@richrealign
4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, to notice the benefits of the method it's recommended to do three rounds - it's at the end of the third round that we see the major shift in hormones etc. One round won't do much unfortunately. As to how many inhales, it depends person to person. 30 is a good average, some need more, some less. Hope that helps

Is it normal for your heart to beat really hard on the exhale? Only a couple of beats are quite strong on the exhale
@richrealign
4 жыл бұрын
Your heart rate will go up and down depending on how much oxygen you're taking it in. It should find balance again when you hold the breath out. Anything that feels 'really hard' means maybe there's a little too much force in some area, so see what happens when you take things down a level. Only a couple of beats sounds ok though.

@richrealign
3 жыл бұрын
I think we're on the same page with what we're trying to say - I always say 'no force' for the same reason. The percentages are a guide that help some people, but the goal is more to focus on a flow of breathing where you breathe in more than you let out. Breathing 100% in takes effort and time and is missing the point. Hope that helps clarify what I meant.

I can relax as studied zen meditation and Qi gong for years but this is so hard for my mind or my basic instinct to switch of.I got tested for Covid-19 as coughing and chest is sore.But still grounding and wim hoffing to keep on puffing. Thanks for the cool play list and your wisdom.Breath is life and I want to fill my lungs up for 2 min then 3,,hopefully one day

Hi mate, great video it was really helpful! I'm a complete beginner and i would just like to know, is it essential to do the breathing just before the cold shower in order to get optimal benefits? or does it not matter? Also should our belly be expanding when inhaling? (e.g: our belly is raising.) I'm hoping this will help my depression and anxiety i've been suffering with for a while
@richrealign

Hi Jay, glad you liked the video! In answer to your questions: no, it's not essential to do the breathing, you can do them separately. But I'd highly recommend doing what you suggested to give you some extra pep and good feeling that will really help what you're going through. As to the breathing, don't focus too much on where and what kind of movement, rather deep long breaths in general, that will automatically fill the belly, then ribs then chest. Let go of getting it right, and drop into the feeling it gives you, that also helps you escape your own mind. Enjoy!

Hey dude, I've been doing Wim Hof breathing every morning for a little over a month. Over this time I've been feeling I was doing it wrong, I'd been thinking of it in terms of a workout for the lungs. When Wim says to think in intensity I imagined that meant I had to breathe in as much air as I could as powerfully as I could. At the end of the sessions I'd feel great, but I'd have a sort of headrush, a similar kind of thing would happen if I meditated and didn't concentrate too well. And well I just couldn't really figure out where my issue was. Tried a session considering all of this and found it to be so much more relaxing, I feel like I've gained what I want to have gained from this breathing from that session, thanks. The playlist is great by the way, trying to bring myself to meditate without it is gonna be hard.

Hi, I do not recommend the squeeze in any way - this is force, and as Wim often says, force is destructive and nothing good comes of it. The squeezing is a new thing, Wim never taught it in the original course or to us as instructors 4 years ago, so I'm the wrong person to ask, sorry.

Thank you for your grounded video. I've been doing the wim hof breathing now for about a month and have felt many benefits and feel overall great doing it. I have added rounds as Ive felt moved to and so now I usually go to 4th and 5th round. This started out feeling really good but it seems the last week or so on these later rounds I am realizing that there is a bit of disorientation happening at the end of my retention and I can't remember the last bit of my retention, almost like a mini blackout. It's around the 2:15 to 2:30 mark. In the early rounds I am very present and take my rescue breath at the obvious point, but as I go deeper and longer in later rounds, it feels like at a certain point I am relying on my body to let me know when it's been long enough which is sometimes after I am conscious of it, if that makes sense? It doesn't feel forced, and I always come away feeling like I have gone deep into my parasympathetic but it also feels a bit risky and disorienting and I'm not sure whether it is ultimately beneficial - like is mini fainting on the regular (if that's what is happening) a good idea? . Do you have any experience with this? Many blessings and thanks!
@richrealign
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Zack, thanks for sharing your experience! You've said it's not forced so it sounds ot me like you're dropping into a very deep state of consciousness, perhaps relatable to yoga nidra / deep theta & delta states. "The body and mind got to sleep, but awareness remains aware" is what my yoga teacher would say. There is zero danger here, as long as you're in a safe environment. The body will always come to. The question I have for you is, how do you feel afterwards? Rested? Groggy? Any insights? Are you more grounded and peaceful, or agitated and unclear? That's the real mark of how any practice affects us. What do you do directly after the breathing, and how does that feel? I'd love to know more.

@@richrealign Thank you so much for your reply! I find that very interesting about what you said of dipping into a deep level of consciousness and it makes sense, especially as our oxygen levels get lower during retention it is easier to engage this state and perhaps I have nothing to fear!. I have experienced these similar timeless deep states in meditation albeit not while holding my breath so I think that is mostly where my concerns arose from. Tbh I think that after these disorienting time losses/ "losing" consciousness/ dipping deeper whatever one might call it I certainly felt confused and a bit fearful and a bit of disconnect all the while noticing the relaxing benefits of the deep parasympathetic and the clearing as well as strengthening I feel in my cardiovascular system. The breathing has been the start to my days during all this time at home and from there have gone to either exercises or straight to the cold showers (amazing!) as I have been exploring these wim hof practices. Up until these recent concerning experiences, this has been feeling such a great way to start my day to feeling alive and connected and present which I carry through my day. I have readjusted since the last couple days and decided to not follow along with the app as I find I might be tracking my time too much this way, and just to directly be with my breath and retention without a timer so there is nothing external that may be overguiding or a possible self standard I am trying to maintain. This has felt better so far to let my own rhythm guide. What I am after mostly with my practices is greater presence and connection between my body mind and spirit which allows me to connect with all of life. I am one who is more comfortable typically to disconnect/ detach. The breathing and the cold has so far been a great direct access to this end, a healthy uncomfortability that brings great direct experience of life. Im seeing, though if im potentially overdoing it or fearful is another option, then I run the risk of detaching/ disconnecting. For myself, there might be a fine line or a sweet spot or maybe even an edge to dance with. I don't know, I'm very new to these methods so I truly appreciate your reply and for all you have shared of your thoughts and experiences and grateful for the opportunity to share mine🙏

@@zackmoon9 All sounds great! The best advice I can give is to go your own way and experiment - find that connection by listening to what is happening on the inside. The method served for me as a stepping stone to deeper practices with more structure and lineage like yoga or qi gong. Your relationship to how you relate to your body and the energies that you may now have access to mean that these practices take on a new meaning and accessibilities. Enjoy Zack, and never stop exploring.

Due to Covid , we've learned about proning, and why doctors put patients on their bellys. Most of the lungs capacity is near the back. So, I've only been doing this method for a month, but Ive been experimenting with doing it sitting up (not my favorite), and on the back/belly/side. I haven't noticed any difference, especially since our breathing varies based on when we last ate, stress etc. Does anyone have an opinion, or have you experimented with different position?
@richrealign
3 жыл бұрын
Deep breathing into the belly, when lying on the belly, is for me very uncomfortable. Sitting up is typical for pranayama and helps keep me present and focused, leading toward meditation. But lying on the back is the most relaxing I find, and lets me go deeper into myself and into relaxation. That helped me the most in finding a lot of peace and stillness.

At 3.11 he criticizes people who are over exerting , implying that exertion will result in the body utilizing a greater % of oxygen being used for this effort. While this is true, getting over oxygenated is more than easily maintained despite the wasted oxygen. The benefit of this method for beginners is the conditioning given to the diaphragm muscle as well as some core muscles becoming stronger as most people have not ever pushed this muscle the way they should. In conjunction with his opinion on breathing in verses exhaling 75% & inhaling 100%. Again this is a funny statement if we apply it to oxygenation as the other 25% would give you that much more room for more inhalation and oxygenation . Not to mention getting rid of the c02 exhaust. Many of us never expelled the lower part of the lung resulting in gases that are toxic to our health that may sit low in the lungs. Heavier gasses never have an opportunity to escape this region. C02 is the result of metabolized burned fat or sugar byproduct. Collapsing the lungs entirely and filling them entirely is the most efficient way to oxygenate the body if it is not exhausted it is harming you! And again it may be more than just c02 ( NG propane, co1 ( carbon monoxide) as well as other pollutants. So 100% in 100% out is the gold here! I am a free diver and a competitive swimmer and have been doing this long before Wimm Hoff was ever heard of . I set underwater distance records and time duration records in high school I am currently 61 yrs of age and still practice this technique. My blood test vitals are equal to a 40 year old athlete.
@previouslyachimp

Thank you for that Dana, I'm interested in what it takes to breathe like a free diver, I think that would be a wonderful skill to have, but I'm thinking that the Wim Hof goal is different to that of the freediver. He says that this method should not be used when swimming/diving as there is a high chance of people passing out. The Wim Hof goal is not to be able to hold your breath for a long time per se, it's is more about tapping into the 'autonomic' nervous system, and trying to gain an otherwise unattainable control over it. It's about improving the immune system and reducing the inflammation response and 'fight-or-flight' instinct. Obviously, there is some overlap with freediving technique, but I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable to fully understand the differences, or what is happening biologically with oxygen/Co2 etc. Thanks again for your comment. :)

Any advice for a recovery breath after completing the 15 second hold? Is it better to do this breath hold after inhaling or exhaling? Thanks

The recovery breath, as I learnt is, is the 10-15 second inhale hold after the exhale hold. You're recovering from holding your breath out for a longer time than normal :)

Thanks for answering. My question was a bit incomplete. After doing all the rounds and 15 s last hold. I read that you can do another recovery breath. Inhale and hold for as long as possible. When I don't do this there is too much of a buzz , pulsating, energy etc. I find it helps me to calm down and recover. Any thoughts ? Is this a good practice? Best wishes.

Are you saying hold breath after 15 seconds again ? I do like the extra 15 secs, this is when I feel relaxed as i know it's only a short hold and I've achieved the longer hold beforehand. I find this is where the training part of your lungs seems to kick in.
