That's not bad. When I was a kid, I used to sneak into the clubs and see him play. Was underage, but things were a little looser then. I've heard him up close on acoustic. Thing is, he ALWAYS sounded like himself, no matter what he played. It's mostly in the fingers. I've heard him play on a 335 into a half stack, and a Flying V through an Acoustic brand amp with the horn loaded tweeter. Albert King was his hero. His tone, especially clean tone, starts right with Albert King's tone.

cheyne15..............so correct. SRV's sound was in his hands and what happened between his ears...........if SRV picked up a jazzbox and played it through a solid state old sears silvertone amp it would still be identifiable in sound to him........

Stevie played at mind-boggling volumes, so his tone had a natural compression. If you just can't do that (babies, neighbors, etc.), add a compressor pedal. He was playing at much lower volumes in his later stuff, and he all but loses that compression. He also used 2 TSs (1 to boost the other). I love my Comp 66 and Double Trouble from Visual Sound to acheive this. He would also play out of mulitple amps for a layered sound. My 2 Sparkle Drives from Voodoo Lab really do the trick for this effect.

Regardless of WHY Stevie lowered the tuning to Eb, doing so does in fact lessen the string tension, and by doing so, also lessens the attack of the notes, creating a smoother, more legato sound, as other players have also done (Van Halen, Yngwie, Etc.). I have also heard that that Stevie used insanely heavy strings-like 13's!!!-which is thick even by Acoustic guitar standards! So while this vid gets somewhat CLOSE to SRV's amazing tone, I have NEVER heard anyone truly replicate it exactly, not even other southern blues players who were deliberately trying to do so (Kenny Wayne Shepard, Etc.).
@tylergavin4757

He tuned to Eb for his voice. A lot of players do that.
@ThordunnHeat

I guess this make sense, but I also think since SRV was HEAVILY influenced by Albert King and Jimi Hendrix (and Jimi played in Eb) he maybe decided to tune it Eb aswell, it really gives it a bit more feel to it if you ask me and a "growling" effect.
@rafaelpretto292

Exactly, Jimi played in E flat (Little Wing as an example), and SRV idolized Jimi Hendrix as a personal hero.

SRV didn't play in e flat for tone. I used to think it was to relieve tension because he used heavy strings but one of the double trouble guys said it was because he couldn't sing in E. That's all there is to it, but I guess it did eventually became part of his tone.
@L3ONARDO07
10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Some of his songs just don't sound as good in E
@rafaelpretto292

Another reason is that Stevie Ray idolized Jimi Hendrix, who also used the E flat tuning (check Little Wing original by Hendrix)

L3ONARDO07 I don’t believe he couldn’t sing in E. Listen to Hug you squeeze you from the El Mocambo. It’s played in the key of F, or E for standard tuning.
@colaboytje
6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. It had to be in E flat or he couldn't sing it. Martinez, his guitar tech set the record straight on the myth that he did it for tone. Also, in the beginning, SRV used 13 gauge strings, but when he told Martinez that his fingertips were suffering and bleeding, Martinez convinced SRV that he could get the same sound with thinner strings (11) and lower action by setting his guitars up differently. So, the myth that that tone is only possible with high action and 13's, was debunked by Martinez. Essentially: you need a clean amp dialed up to breaking up, lots of mids (in amp and pickups), a heavy attack (very important!), and a good tubescreamer style pedal at low gain. And years and years and years of practice ofcourse :-)

From what I have read, SRV's Fender amps had a 5751 tube in V1 which has lower gain as well as deliberately mismatched speaker and output transformer impedances - ie 8ohm speaker with a 2 ohm OT. This allowed to get lots of power section distortion but murdered output tubes!

Listen to Skynyrd's "Simple Man" from their first album. Half-step down - guitars to Eb. Why? Normal tuning too high for Ronnie. Try singing the chorus of that song in standard tuning. Nye on impossible. Same with a lot of rock/blues artists.

A lot of mids (if you have mid EQ control), neck pickup, moderate gain and a LOT of practice to have top-notch vibrato and bending. You should also learn how to play really agressive, but accurate.
