I went around 1980. Dachau was well presented as a memorial of mans inhumanity to man. We were there several hours. Newish houses were just outside the camp perimeter and it was surrounded by woodland with a cacophony of bird chatter emanating from within. I had read sometime before that Auschwitz was also surrounded by bird life but, that not one bird had been seen by the author flying or wandering the compound. I found, during my visit, that this was also true of Dachau! A visit to Dachau is a must if in that area.

Over 30 years ago, I walked to & from dachau train station to the concentration camp. Recommend this as it gives you time to reflect.

They recently uncovered the foundations of the original entrance/guardhouse along the walking trail from the train station to the Memorial and have turned part of it into the Trail of Remembrance. I am adding it to the guide on my website and will have it in my "what to see/expect at Dachau video". Walked the trail in May also

Hello, is better to take a train from Munich to Dachau then the bus … or it is more convenient to just get an Uber from Munich and drive directly to Dachau??? Thanks love your video by the way.

Great question, but for the most part the train plus local bus is always better than an Uber. Even if they both left the area of the train station at the same time, the Uber will take the same amount of time as driving is around 45 minutes door to door. With high traffics or a road issue that can be 60-75 minutes. Plus the train option is super cheap. I'd say however if you were staging more on the outskirts of Munich or by the airport, or had some sort of a mobility issue, then a cab or Uber can make sense, just not in most cases

@@Bigboytravel Thanks for the info . I was just wondering because we are actually staying in Zürich Switzerland and wanted to take a day trip to Munich and go to Dachau , and we have a 3:30 minute train ride already I was thinking maybe an Uber would have been better once we made it to Munich but we will just stick with the train and bus option. Again thanks for the info. Good day

Is there anyway you can stay a night in Munich to make the experience a little more easy to manage? Pretty far away to tackle this from Zurich as a day trip

@@Bigboytravel I wish we could, we planned this trip back in January ( we are kinda back packing thur several European countries) and just recently decided to add Munich to the list we were originally going to Cologne but thought about going to the CC their in Germany 🇩🇪 we didn’t want to come all the way from US and not take this opportunity so we decided to switch Cologne for Dachau because it’s closer than Berlin. So our hotel is already booked … wish we would’ve thought of this sooner.

From Zurich it is about a 3 hour drive door to door to Dachau but you'd be messing with delays with rental car pick up and drop off as well as parking issues. Although unorthodox, I'd suggest finding a cheap hotel in Munich to overlap your current hotel for a night and then just travel with a day pack/small overnight bag. Could leave in the evening of night 1 to then get a late diner, walk old town, stay the night, thrn morning day two go to dauchu, come back for a little more city center in munich and train back to stay in Zurich. Still only eats up about a day of the trip and probably cost 150 euros for the stay but worth it

Something to note: I looked up the schedule for the Regional trains, and I found that there's only one train per hour; it leaves at every :27 (meaning, 9:27, 10:27, 11:27, etc). On the way back, it leaves at around every :22 from Dachau Bahnhof.

Kind of... currently they vary a little with 8:25, a 13:23, and a 19:24 although the rest are :27. Throughout the year the RB schedule is pretty close to that but does change some. Same thing on the returns which is why I didnt get to rigid with times in the video and urge people to go to my guide for links to check the schedule. While we prefer the faster RB line, the S2 line also leave 1-3 times an hour so if some missing the RB it is better to hop on the S2 than wait for the next RB unless they decide to eat at the train station while they wait.
