Another tip: I like to use a bit of wax resist inside the holes and this prevents glaze from sticking (use a very small paintbrush and swirl inside).

Hi! Thanks for sharing! I'm trying to figure out how to fire rings, but I'm not quite sure yet. 'cause like you said, it's good to clean the little hole, put wax, etc... and a ring should be all glazed. Would you have any suggestions?😅

You could use some wire kiln stilts (as shown in video) and sand off any sharp pinpricks left by the stilts with a fine dremel tool afterwards. I would then simply the seal the sanded areas with a polish of beeswax :)

Great video! I've been looking for help on how to fire hanging pieces. Your video has been the most helpful so far. Thank you so much! I tend to make a lot of hanging objects and jewelry so this is a necessary piece for my work.

I talk about this in the video. I probably get around half dozen firings before I replace the wire/clay but it depends what types of materials you are using.

It is so strange this video popped up. I have been planning to create a holder for my ceramic spoons so I can hang them in the kiln and when I saw your design I about died, because we had the exact same round design. I struggle with the kiln stilts I've made because I make different size spoons and I like to completely glaze some of my spoons. I don't like the holes the wire leaves behind in the glaze and it is an extra step to grind them down. I like how you did your hooks because you can remove them and space them according to your pieces so I'm going to implement that into my design. Thank you for this tutorial.

Thank you so much. I’m new at this. We have the 1st diagram you showed but I’m introducing a lot of pendants that won’t fit the bars. I found the wire at work and wasn’t sure how to use it. I will be making one today.

You are very welcome! It's perfect for small hole pendants, the thin (high temp) wire holds up really well as vertical hooks :)

What’s the wire brand?
@karenwildeart

I use kanthal high temp wire from my local supply store in NZ. It may be called a different brand depending on where you live. The most important thing is to check the temperature specs and that it's proper kiln wire (as per video explanation :)

I’ve been trying to figure out how to make ceramic dice , do you have any suggestions on how to fully glaze something like that ( where it can’t really be suspended and ideally would be completely glazed ) ? I’m new to ceramics and don’t know much about it all.

You can use stilts made from clay and kiln wire. They would leave little pin pricks that you might need to sand down. I don't know any other way sorry

You should be able to reuse the wire, right? I recently fired some kanthal wire for Jewelery to 1280 and it became brittle and snaps easily. Should I try and use it again?
@karenwildeart
11 ай бұрын
Check the recommended firing temperature for the wire. The hotter you fire, the more brittle it will become and the less firings you will get out it. 1280c is very hot! If you're talking 1280f you should get a few firings out of it but yes it will probably snap if you try bend the wires again after firing. That's normal as the wire will "set" after firing, same as kiln element wiring.

That is absolutely the BEST, easiest way to be able to glaze and fire porcelain beads. Well done Kiwi from another Kiwi. Ive been working in sterling silver for 20years but now wanting to research Porcelain. I’ve watched so many Utubers but yours is definitely the practical approach. Ive booked a place in a Community Studio - lesson - freestyle hand building. Bev.J

For your longer ornaments, why not just shorten the wire? The wire seems so long and they were hanging so low.
@karenwildeart
9 ай бұрын
That's definitely an option. This was just a quick mock up and offering ideas. Even a shorter wire sometimes doesn't do the trick (depending on the ornament size and weight) but elevating the platform is easy enough :)

I'm not sure what they are called exactly, round hole clay cutters. I purchased a set from my local clay shop as I like to support local businesses but I'm sure you could find them online. They come in sets of various sizes

Do you have to bisque the piece before using it to hang the ornaments or can you hang stuff on it green?

Bisque first. Greenware is very fragile and can break just by handling
