A hint on getting the right distance of glue/primer, the length of the glue and primer applicator is almost the same distance inside the fitting (slip end) You can use this distance on your pipe so that you do not over extend your primer and glue (I used to be an underground irrigation installer and we used this trick all the time) :)

Great video BRS! It is a good idea to chamfer the end of the pipe before applying glue. This chamfer allows a glue filled pocket to form and creates an even better seal. I'm a bit anal tho as I'm used to plumbing hi pressure lines at work. Aquariums are not in the high pressure category LOL.

Perfect timing for this vid as I'm getting ready to do this myself. Question, do I cement everything together before or after I do a leak test for my system? Thanks!

The thing is, I've never used primer before. How does it help the pipes? I've only used the cement when I attach the pipes before.

I put a whole system together and realized I didn't use primer. 20 gallon tank, 10 gallon sump. Do I need to rip it all apart and start over?
@BRStv

Using a primer is considered best practice, but in a vast majority of cases, you'll be just fine without a primer. Before you add rock, sand, or any livestock, we'd suggest filling the tank with water and doing a leak test anyway.

Do you have to use special marine pipes. In the uk we can get upvc items that are the same or near matches.
@SaltRockStacker

In the US we typically use Schedule 40 pipes. Some use Schedule 80 but they cost a lot more and are overkill for most aquarium applications. Rule of thumb is that if it is safe enough for your drinking water, it should be safe for the aquarium. I still use a matching sized flexible hose for the final 1 foot connection to the return pump. Otherwise the pump vibration could carry into the entire pipe system :)

First? While I'm first, I might as well mention that I've used Silicone sealant to seal pipe fittings together. Needless to say it doesn't work.

I got a few questions because I'm setting up a 65 gallon reef ready tank I already bought the sump the tank and stand I bought a trigger system Emerald 26 from my local pet store does your green PVC pipe match up with the Green Top on the acrylic trigger system Emerald series and if it doesn't by how much is the shade difference I always want under my tank to look as beautiful as the tank above I mean hey let's face it if you have a beautiful display tank you want to show everything off LOL XD also was planning to order 67 pounds of Reef Saver live rock a kessil a160 tuna blue I already have another one on my BioCube which is going to be moved to the upstairs level of the new house I moved into also was going to get Marine pure bricks to put into the sump because you can never have too much filtration in my opinion also the new place I moved into has a fish pond but there's a blue heron that keeps eating the fish I can't kill it but is it illegal if my "dog kills it" lol I'm joking about that but I would like to know how I can stop it from eating my fish it's starting to piss me off

BulkReefSupplyCom thank you also where can I get black fittings I always see the grey ones that you guys sell on the website but I really want a sort of green and black look I'm going to be making the stand and lid look more like a gothic church Style with Windows on it but I'm going to have a heavily tinted black acrylic so it'll just let shades of blue light travel through it but that's just a Statics on the outside nothing to do with the fish LOL XD

this video is too late for me 😂😂😂 , I managed to glue my union joint together so the cap won't screw off. somehow the glue creeped over the seal. also , there's a tool to cut the pipe that will make your life easier. I recommend buying it .

Good tips but please tell the reefers out there not to used any drain fittings on the pressure side of the systems if they use pressure parts like elbow and tees that are made to be used with water pressure they have less chances of a big flood if one of those drain fittings burst under a static pressure of the return pump for example from the basement to the second floor where is the tank located it will be disastrous. Listen t the plumbers. Keep Reefing America

OK so spend 3 times as mutch for colored PVC and slop purple primer all over it? Don't think so. Pro plumbers will argue for sure but I hardly ever use primer. and if I do I sure as hell wipe the excess off because it looks like crap. Overflow lines done have any pressure in them and less than 10' of return is not going to magically block up to increase pressure. I simply use cleaner, then regular PVC glue and wipe off the excess..
