Tl;dr: Buy local guide books, they support the development of new areas. When you buy a guide book for a particular area, you support the development of new bouldering areas. A sort of acknowledgement to the people who have used a lot of time and money for you to be able to just come and climb as you do indoors. Climbing outdoors is way cheaper than climbing indoors anyway, so don't be greedy. :))

Climbing indoors costs me £8.50, all I need Is chalk and shoes, and I get mats, brushes and guides included. This video has made outdoor bouldering seem VERY expensive lol, although I am still keen to try it.

Hey epic TV, along with this intro to outdoor bouldering can you please cover some basic climbing etiquette as well as social distancing practices since a lot of new climbers are going outside and overcrowding popular crags. Things like stick to 2-3 people max at a problem, sharing boulders, reduced music, cleaning up after yourself properly and maybe exploring less popular crags. Here in Sydney, Australia we have a fair bit of bouldering and it seems there are a lot of people going outdoors due to closed gyms and these new people are very inexperienced and do not understand the pressure they are putting on outdoor climbing in the community. Since this is a popular channel a video from you might go a long way.

If I'm bouldering in a new area, I would like to flash a problem as quickly as possible. Nobody cares about onsighting in bouldering. Therefore, I would appreciate if everybody left copious tick marks, ideally with the thickness indicating the size of the hold. Go watch Mellow videos, you'll see how much a boulder should be ticked. \end{joke}

My first 6A+ and my first 6A were on an outdoor boulder. I've had less than 5 sessions outdoors. The sessions were all over 3 hours though with lots of thinking on beta and proper rests, so that might be why I reached upwards by that much during those few goes I had. Already a 6B+ climber indoors now that outdoor boulders are completely out of reach in my region though.

also, pad placement. once you get a little height, you’re not going to spit off straight down nicely onto the pads underneath you. you’re going to instinctively push off of the wall and get much more distance backwards from it than you’d think. especially when you’re mantling or on vertical/slab problems

@@davids2944 There is a boulder rock in a Rotterdam park with a few routes on it actually :) But I reckon it'll be too crowded and therefor still not allowed, or the park is just closed (not anymore probably). As for building home walls, we're a small country with a lot of people. Unless you're living in the east/north, no luck unless you're willing to literally sacrifice the entire garden you might have, unhappy neighbours included. I was pondering making a small frame for campus that could easily be removed.

That's true, but it's a good investment, you'll have them for a long time. To begin with, one will be absolutely enough. But of course the more the better. My advice would be to start with a medium size or big one and get a additional sit start pad, never can have enough of those

I have one from psychi. Its cheap, no frills but its my go to. I also have a grivel which was about sixty percent more expensive but I don't use it as much as its much stiffer and doesn't conform to the ground as nicely. It should last a bit longer though as its better made. The psychi is about £100 for the single fold. They also have a double fold. They can all be velcroed together to make one big mat too.

I've been climbing the whole time as I've got a boulder only a five minute walk from my house. No one in the climbing community knows about it so there's no chance of coming in contact with anyone. If you can, go out, find a boulder, clean it up then you've got your own private boulder.

Social distancing is still in effect. The spotter should be someone you live with until this pandemic is over. There is no point to wearing a mask if you're going to stand too close to and touch each other. Also you can't share the boulder or jump on one recently climbed by others. Be aware also that it's hard to climb outside without getting scratches that break the skin, and that can become a point of entry for bacteria an viruses.
