I've been Piking for 60 years now and a long long time ago I stopped using treble hooks I always use a single large hook when deadbaiting. Yes you may miss a few takes, but far less damage to the fish and MUCH easier unhooking.

This is a fantastic video you guys, I’m about to try go pike fishing on my own, having had a couple of accompanied trips out now. This video is a brilliant reminder of how a “newbie” should handle a pike, of how delicate they are, how to set up and safely strike and land these awesome fish. Loved when the pike jumped out of the water just before slipping the net under it. It must have known the cameras were on and to put on a performance. Great stuff, keep up the good work 😊🎣🙌🏻

For catch and release I really don't like treble hooks, especially multiple ones - I've been using single partly de-barbed hooks (even on lures) for years. I'd rather loose a fish than end up with an unhooking nightmare. In practice I think I've only lost a couple of fish by doing this. I even landed a Pike on a rubber trout lure when it hadn't even been hooked - it just refused to let go! For beginners I would strongly recommend not using multiple treble hooks unless you have an experienced Pike fishing freind around.

What distance between float and bait for deeper pools on slow moving water? Presumably in crystal clear water the pike will come up? Advice please on adjusting for water clarity and depth when river fishing.

Hey Ron. Generally, pike aren't fussy, even in the clearest of water. If you're not getting any takes, you're probably in the wrong location. So it's important to keep moving to try and locate the fish. as long as you have around 2ft of separation from the bait to the float, you should be absolutely fine. 🎣

Location is key. However, I always aim to start at about 2’ from the lake or river bottom. Another key ingredient is to add movement of the dead bait. If you hold back the line or twitch the float it adds movements to a motionless bait and that will bring takes on the coldest of days. Good luck 🤞 🐊

I was surprised to see that barbed hooks are being used in this video. A thing from the past, when we knew no different. Barbless hooks hang on well and cause no damage, pushing out easily. Good vid otherwise.

There is zero sport in hanging some dead meat on a hook for a passing pike, sitting watching a float in the freezing wind and rain. Lures or bust!
