Thanks for sharing this, looks really good! I just starting learning about leaf gilding and totally taken by it. I will definitely attempt to do this on my project bike's gas tank when it is time to paint it! Could you be kind enough to share the details on the material you used (brand, where you bought it from), like the leaf and the glue or whatever you used to get the leaf to adhere to the tank prior to doing the clear coat?

Dux fast size for the glue. I like imitation leaf from Luco or L.A. Gold.

Do you use stencil to apply the glue and the remove the stencil on what stage? Im trying to do thin lines with crisp edges
@elroypinstriping8022
Жыл бұрын
Yes you can use stencils or tape for a clean edge. I have another video showing that process. But on this one it was just hand painted, no stencil. If you are not getting a clean edge you may not be pushing the leaf on hard enough, the size is too wet or dry, or you don't have a clean edge on the size.

Thanks for sharing this video. Do you go straight over this with 2k clear? Are you buffing the tank before gold to prep it for the clear later on?
@elroypinstriping8022

It was cleared after this. 2k. And the tank was cleared before I started and wet sanded smooth.

Hey Man, how do you get the outline done? Is it gold leaf too? I really would like to see/know how you get those swirls or „pattern“ on the outline. :)

It's just gold leaf with a spin effect.

@@elroypinstriping8022 thank you for the quick answer and sorry for bother you again, but how you make the spin effect? With a self-made tool or something? Really would like to do it on my bike :)

There are other videos out there but yes special tools. For real gold you need velvet. For imitiation gold or silver you need something more abrasive. Some guys use blue Scotts shop paper towels wrapped around cotton, or even their thumb, there are a couple other ways. Look at Z Rods channel here on KZitem. Or search gold leaf spinning tool

Did you ever have the leaf bubble after a few days? Would you know the cause? I have the same project, doing 6 of them and so far 4 started to bubble and two did not.

Only once. But I put it to close to heat so it would cure faster. What size/adhesive are you using? Any additives that would cause gassing?

When clear coating, must you use 2k clear or will rust oleum in a spray can from the auto store work? Acrylic or enamel?

None of the rattle can clears except Spray Max will perform and last like an automotive clear coat. They don't truly harden and eventually crack in my experience. Spray Max does have a rattle can 2k clear that is solid and I use it often. It has a plunger to activate the hardener inside the can.

Awesome! What kind of paint do you use for making the gold size visible? Is it enamel or does regular solvent paint works too?

Well DUX is oil based so I use a tiny bit of 1shot. Not even a drop, I usually dab my brush and pallet in the size then from a drop of color on the side I barely dab the tip into the color and work that in. Reflex blue on lighter colors. Imitation gold, not metallic, on the darker colors. But you'll see the shiney size on a wet sanded or scuffed surface anyway.

Do you seal the gold leaf under a clear coat once your done? I’ve been wanting to do gold leafing on a boat name but want to seal it under a clear topcoat with the rest of the paint so it’s protected and just wondered if this was something you do on the gold leaf you do?

yes you first paint whatever you are painting, then apply sizing and gold leaf. After you finish gilding, you then spray the whole thing, gold leaf included, with your clear coat. Without the clear coat the gold will oxidize if it doesn't fall off first.
