I thought this is how it should be done, thanks for the video. I saw these cactus at a big store where I live and almost bought one until my son dropped it and it fell out of the dirt and there was a wood stick shoved through the entire middle of the cactus holding it into the soil and there were no roots, just rotten cactus. I'm thinking they did that to make to top stay on faster to sell it faster...idk tho. It was terrible, I posted a video of it to warn others who might go buy one. Have you ever seen it done like that?

yes , this is called grafting, but in your case it was a scam.... they just attached it so that it can be sold faster,,,, but they can actually be joined if done correctly,,,, like this video

@@gingerbroadway thats awful, they know it takes a while for a cactus to die so they can get away with the buyer not really noticing at least for a while, if at all. And when they hot glue flowers on them its ridiculous too 🙄. I recently bought a graphed moon cactus (made sure it didn't have the stick shoved into it) and decided to cut the top colorful cactus off and plant it, it grew roots in about a month.

@@gingerbroadway well I make myself look like a crazy person in the store by pulling the plants I'm thinking about buying right out if their pot to look at the roots 😆 and thats how I noticed the stick poking out the bottom. Now I check everytime. I watched a Summer Rayne Oaks video once where she said to check the roots of every plant your thinking about buying, just kind pull it up gently and have a look, it has saved me from buying some plants with root rot that looked fine from the leaves but not good in the soil.

Yes If you are in India then Winters or Spring season is best for grafting ... Sept-March , Avoid grafting in high temperatures or high humidity... but if kept indoors you can graft it anytime... Also as you mentioned ‘roadside cactus ‘ .... make sure this is not a milkweed cactus ( one which produces milky substance when cut ) because moon cactus is not a milkweed cactus ... we need fleshy insides to graft the moon cactus

Doesn't the root stock need to be dried and have a calus before you plant it into the soil?
@crochetbykunal

Even if you plant it directly it doesnt matter ... I’ve been planting it without the calus since i started grafting and it grows roots ... (It will rot only if you keep the soil always moist ). Generally I water the plant once in a week

why you slice off the edges?
@crochetbykunal
3 жыл бұрын
The tip of the plant and these sides produces more growth hormone .... so If we do not slice the edges , branches will shoot out from the rootstock ... if we are slicing the edges , the main tip becomes the part which can provide nutrition to our moon cactus or the scion

Aa per google it grows 9-12 inches … I have one in red which is still strong and growing for more than 5 years … it doesn’t look as cute as the new one but The colour has started fading , it has calluses, wrinkles , too many babies , but I still love the appearance… looks like an old wise cactus

It sticks itself and take nutrients from the lower cactus , you can see new growth within 15-20 days after grafting ... by this time you can remove the plastic bag and the rubberband

@@crochetbykunal thanks for sharing your knowledge. I tried it yesterday, hopefully my moon cactus grafting is a success. My question is: as you mentioned above, that it can be watered after 3-4 days, how often then should they be watered? Thank you!
@crochetbykunal

dragon fruit is also cactus but it is a tropical cactus ... so it needs more water than other cacti , you can water it only when you notice that the soil has dried completely... summer season is very close so water the plant after every 2-3 days or alternate days
