Nice video. One thing I would add is being careful of the o ring when removing the top hex screw, and making sure it's still there when screwing it back on.

Great video, looks like it works. I always thought that the reason for syringing from the bottom was that air likes to float up so that way it's going with the flow.

Its always difficult keeping it all clean when the oil is added. I find one thing that helps is don’t remove the bleed cup plug from the bleed cup. Just leave it sat in the cup until the job is complete as won’t stop the air escaping if it’s just laying in there.

Yep, done a gravity bleed like that. The tube below is too short. I bought (at hardware shop) a longer tube to reduce risk of spills. 9/32 is 7 mm for the spanner. I think this method is lower risk than using a syringe. With a syringe you have to put the connection between tube and brake under pressure. If the tube comes off you will have fluid everywhere, Note that bleed funnel comes with a stand, so that you can put the funnel down on your bench without it falling over and spilling your oil. For cleaning I used a brake cleaning spray aerosol. Did the job. If the old oil is dirty, you will see the clean oil come through. If the existing oil is clean, how to tell you have completely changed it? But then if it seems clean, perhaps no need to completely change it. The only specialised tool you need is the bleed funnel, made by Shimano. And of course the proper mineral oil. Thanks for the video. This bleed was much easier than I expected it to be.

Good video. It'll be easier to push the pistons apart with the reservoir screw open and venting (after setting the lever to level position of course)

Thanks for the bud Mike! Dad tip. Don’t forget to reinstall the front tire before you pull the lever during the lever bleed. And you can tap the lines and brake handle to get some of those hidden bubbles to pop out. Great video!

Why not expedite the bleeding process by pumping the brake, close the valve, let go of brake, open valve, pump brake, etc... thats the way its done a motorcycle 🙂 Thanks for the video.

It's done the same way for bikes... Also taping a sandwich bag to the bleed tube means you don't have to keep the steering position over the bucket.

To get all air bubbles out of the caliper end of system, shouldn't you have performed a series of pump brake & open and close bleed value (watching for air bubbles to escape into hose)?

use the correct size wrench 7mm not 9/32. 9/32 is larger than 7mm and you will end up damaging the bleed screw

I did a gravity bleed on my front brakes and it worked great. Tried the rear and the lever was mushy. I think because the line is so much longer the air bubbles are harder to get out. The front brake flows faster because it's shorter and a straighter flow. I had to use a syringe for the rear and it feels better.
@RunBikeMike
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that can happen. I find it takes a lot more time on the back break and sometimes it helps if you remove the caliper from the bike and let it hang straight down. You will need a tall stand for that.
@wumbobo
3 жыл бұрын
Tip your bike on an angle, the front end higher than the rear wheel, but still make sure the levers are parallel to the ground. Also unscrew the rear caliper and let it hang before you do the bleeding.
@russlamson3211
3 жыл бұрын
I had the exact same experience. I used a syringe to fix the problem as well. Thoughts as to causes: 1) The rear hose is longer (as mentioned) and does not go straight down and actually goes up before getting to the rear caliper. 2) The bleed cup was not securely tightened so air was pumped into system while squeezing the brake lever. I made sure the bleed cup was securely fastened and ran fluid through without visible bubbles, but the problem persisted. I then took the rear caliper off and let it hang while using the syringe so don't know which fixed the problem, the syringe or getting the caliper lower. My guess is the syringe as I sucked out several air pockets. My hunch is the poorly attached bleed cup was the cause of the air getting in to begin with.
@s13kuminachu

@@russlamson3211 i would say a syringe is the way to go from the beginning. I live in an apartment and do not have a stand so that option is out. I hang a loop of string from a nail on my porch and run it under the seat to hold the bike up. That's my mechanics stand! Syringe made it much easier. KZitem is full of all these silly little tips and tricks that work for 10% of viewers. Keep it simple, keep it cheap.

Shimano is metric like 95% of the world. Use a 7mm wrench, not a 9/32" one, if you don't want to risk stripping the top of the nut with a loose fitting wrench.

On of the reasons for bleeding brakes, especially with the hygroscopic dot oil, is to remove the old oil. None of the videos actually show this step - and as shown, you have no idea when all the old fluid is out of the system. Would it be OK to open the valves and let all the old fluid run out, and then refill the system with new fluid?
@RunBikeMike
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, when bleeding brakes with mineral oil you can see the color change. So you will know when the old fluid is out. But yes you can drain the system then add fluid and it will work the same.

I am not impressed by the idea of taking the wheel off, just to bleed the brakes. Crumbs! I don't do it for a rear wheel puncture... ... so I am certainly NOT doing for topping off the hydraulics! Besides, with the wheel off, I'd have retension the belt drive before I could use the bike again!! No thank you!
