To be honest, I never thought grooming was a priority to me as a pet owner, but after watching a few of your videos, I take great care of my pets! I had a chow retrieve mix (she passed a few years ago of old age) I shaved every summer so she was not hot, she loved baths and I thought blowdrying her was so cute cause she enjoyed it, I did it for fun lol my cat will only let me groom her, if she gets a sticker she comes to me, its cute brushing her cause I'm the only one she'll let do it. I only have short hair dogs now 3 of them, all pit mixes, one I just got today. One was a rescue and the other was my birthday gift to myself. He hates being brushed and its so funny, he even gets mad when I brush our rescue dog and she's loves being brushed. I guess I never realized how important it was, I always enjoyed grooming my pets. I'm the only one who can cut the dogs nails too. I hope more people learn to enjoy grooming as I have just realized I have, its good for the soul 😇

Not everyone who doesn’t leave voicemails isn’t serious. They may have anxiety and it took everything for them to make that call but reaching the voicemail freaks them out. I challenge you to have grace with those people. If they call again or text, I’d say they’re serious. I appreciate the time you spend to make these animals and parents healthy. You’re so amazing. If you want to do this without scruffing, a cat muzzle helps a bunch and maybe a towel over the head as well. make sure she can breathe but the less she hears and sees and the less restraint you've got, really helps a lot. Sometimes with the cat muzzle, we can hold down the head with an arm and hold the front legs with that hand and then have the other hand holding the back legs. I hope this makes sense, it's hard to explain without demonstrating it.

I have a long haired cat who is very loving, very agreeable, and very attached and sweet to me. I can certainly pick him, he regularly chooses to get in my arms, on my shoulders, likes to be rocked, and likes to be held and gives lots of love; he even sleeps on top of me or under the covers. He gets along well with the other cats in the house too. Yet he has very sensitive skin, more so than the regular cat I think (all cats have somewhat sensitive skin but he’s above the norm). He’s a long haired cat who hates, as in HATES, to be brushed. But due to his long hair he must be brushed. When brushing him, very gently, peacefully and calmly in a quiet room on the bed with no other cats around, he cannot tolerate it except on his head, face, and cheeks. He will bite, and attempt to bite, try to run, squawk and holler, and generally freaks out and acts like I’m beating him. I’ve tried every kind of soft touch brush bristle for him and every size brush, every kind of behavioral mod distractions like treats and water bottles (he loves to drink water out of an Aquafina bottle because he’s peculiar as hell 😂) and it always ends the same way: me having to brush him while he fights, I restrain him with one hand while the other brushes, and eventually he breaks free and runs under the bed. It’s horrible. And upsetting for him; he won’t let me touch him for a couple hours after and looks very dejected. Every long haired cat I’ve ever had loved to be to brushed. His brushing behavior is so outside what I’m accustomed too that I don’t know what else to do. Feels like I’ve tried everything. He gets knots when not brushed, and I have to fight him to keep him brushed, or dry shampooed. If he didn’t have long hair I wouldn’t do it at all, but with his long hair it’s a necessity. Do you have any tips for working with him and getting him to tolerate more or at least tips to restrain him securely and safely?

Poor munchkin. I had a cat that looked exactly the same as Cleo, the sweetest thing normally but we couldn't get a brush near him without him turning into a wild monster and we'd tried since he was a wee kitten. He'd always just hated it. Poor guy got so matted and clumpy. We ended up buying clippers and between my mother and myself, we managed to cut out the matts - we got good at it but it was definitely a process every six months or so. Gotta say I will never own a long-hair breed again.

I know you are not supposed to pull on the fur when clipping the fur but with my mother's cat she has no choice. The fur is so matted that it is the only way for the clippers to cut into the fur. Is there another technique which would not involve any pulling of fur? It must hurt the cat when the fur is pulled.

You did a great job for them. I'm a Vet Tech. Some things people might not know when it comes to cats...their skin is paper thin, it rolls around their body, it's often the same color as their hair and cats can turn their bodies every which way. I've been to the ER couple times from handling cats. They are lightening fast. If they get you with their teeth, they will bit down to the bone. It's not their falt, cats are just sensitive creatures. Again, well done.

I don't like to see any animal restrained and stressed, I understand why people give you so much grief for scruffing - to have compassion and see something in distress evokes a very visceral reaction for a lot of people, BUT I would rather see a short period of restraint and upset to resolve a health issue than see the matting get worse, for her skin to start pulling and becoming damaged and infected! You're doing an excellent job, and you clearly care about what you do. Keep doing how you do! You're awesome.

For a cat that doesn’t like being shaved at all, there is only two options. Scruffing, which has no physical harm on the cat, and sedation, which can physically harm a cat especially older ones. The pet parents did a wonderful job. Both you and the parents were patient and understood, that even though their kitty growled and hissed, you were helping her. Great job DeDe! ^^

This video is making me sooo nervous! We took in a stray cat and she is so lovable and would generally never bite but one day she got really upset about a possum she could see outside and was trying to claw her way out of the window. My mom was worried she would get hurt and took a blanket to try to get her, aware that she might snap in this situation. Unfortunately, her head got out and she bit down into my mom's hand so deeply, her mouth opened so wide that she got stuck for a moment! I had never in my life heard my mom screech like that. I think I have PTSD remembering it!!! ;__; Her hand swelled up to twice its size and she had to go to the hospital immediately. The cat had tore a tendon in her hand and it was infected so she needed surgery. Even years later, my mom's hand still has issues. Cat bites are no joke! That being said, my mom still has the cat and that cat looooves her to bits and has never snapped or made any indication of aggression (toward a person) before or since that one time. But you really just never know with cats!

Where I work we call that an average cat for grooming. One suggestion for your kitty grooming - when we groom them in a lion cut we do go much shorter - I use a Bravura set on #30 or set on #10 and go in reverse - plus a very thorough combing out of the legs, tail and head and, YES, a bath. After that very thorough grooming we offer a bi-weekly or monthly comb-out service where the owners bring the cat in and we comb it out completely for them, and regular baths to keep the coat in good condition and under control. During the comb-outs we also clip the belly, the butt, the pads of the feet, the arm pits, behind the ears, clean the ears and clip the nails or replace vinyl Soft Claws if need be. Most of the battles during cat grooms is because the cats have never been routinely bathed, combed and worked with. No different than dogs in that regard. If we work on the cat on a very regular basis the cats are much easier to do and stay in good shape, so no more cat-from-hell grooms as a result. Much safer for both cat and groomer. We work as teams on the cats, even for the comb-outs. Very popular with the kitty owners and we make truckloads of money with the service as very few groomers in this area will touch cats.

Michelle Caudle I know right!? Completely unbelievable! I am the type that immediately fesses up to my failings, the owners said the place wasn't clean and kept her all day. Wow! Can't believe they took the owners money. Absolutely ridiculous! Poor kitty, she is in good "paws" now!

Since I’ve been watching your videos, my four cats are being groomed every day. Two are long-hair so a little effort now will avoid future problems. Love your videos.

Watching these videos makes me want to buy a cat and a couple more dogs and move to Texas just so I can hang out with Dede.

So I was watching this on my phone, my cat hops up on my lap, and watched it intently. When the cat growled, she growled back, and boy, did her tail move! Yet, she put her paw on my hand if I tried to move the phone! Oh Whiskers... Weird thing is, she actually wanted her slicker brushing after! Good work all👍🏻

Most people don't understand that animal care doesn't always LOOK like they think it should. Its about the care and safety of the animal and the safety of the person performing the task whether it be grooming or vet care. Animals don't understand we are trying to help them all the time and sometimes you have to use different forms of restraint to ensure both parties are safe and no one gets hurt. I think you did an amazing job. You stayed calm, kept her comforted and had the owner involved.

Terrific job as usual. People who criticize your techniques don't know what it takes to groom a cat. Ignore the haters!

that cat is a puff, thats a load of fur, mine would not even been this patiant if i had to trim him, would be one or two hisses and then the claws come out swinging.

Dede that was amazing, it looks like the cat was starting to relax a little, I'm glad the dads picked you, the cat needed to feel safe and know what has been happening to her, you did an awesome job!

I don't know how you ended up on my feed and have zero knowledge of being a groomer but i personally like your Frankness in the channel and even with aggressive animals you make that stuff look fun. Keep on being you girl

Go ahead Dede! Forget about those haters! They don't know what we have to do and what it takes to deal with animals in the animal care field in general.
