Here in zone 3 we can’t start carrots until sometime in May but this does get me excited to garden again once the snow and frost is gone...

We just cover the carrots after we seed and water. We then look daily to make sure its still damp and for germination. Water when needed and remove cover once you have germination.

Question if they are root vegetables will the root underground keep growing after cutting the tops? Will the tops grow again?

I planted outside early last spring. It rains here alot in the N.W. It was a small crop so I used the board method, I learned from Jess Sowards and I heavy seeded. I had a successful crop.

Hi Jill! Do you have any tips on how to combat pill bugs eating the carrot seedlings as soon as they sprout??
@WhisperingWillowFarm
Жыл бұрын
Wow I've never dealt with that pest before in my carrots. I know if you put several watermelon rhines in your beds, the pill bugs will immediately be attracted to it. Hope this helps

The board or covering with cardboard method didn't work for me because i would forget to remove it. Then when I did, things were leggy, yellow, and dying. 😅😅

Thanks for the tips Jill. I have always pulled them out when thinning out. Will the root not grow a new set of greens when cut off or does it just die back in the ground?

Hi Jill. Will your tips work for all root vegetables like beets and radishes? And what company did you get your high tunnel from? I'm doing the NRCS program and in the market for one.
Yes these tricks will benefit most all root veggies

Love the pruning instead of pulling! Did you use pelleted seed? I’m trying pelleted for the first time this year.

I’m sorry if I missed it, but do you have a recommendation for carrots that can well? I don’t have a space for long term cool/dry storage 😢 so I’m hoping to can some. I tried some from the farmers market last year and they were very mushy…he also didn’t know what they were 🤷🏼♀️

Here in Brazil, in the states that doesnt rain too much, they put a galon bottle with two string that go from the bottom of the bottle to the ground. They last for 2 days and keep it dump. Important.: the bottle is laid down no the side, not standing
