I live in Houston, TX and my plants survived a short freeze this past February. Now they are blooming and growing abundantly. Will need to trim back soon before they get too tall.

Hi. when in France last year I picked a seed head off a very fine leafed abutilon plant. Seeds are growing and now about 12inches with maroon and green leaves , though not flowering yet, it is a largish red flower. Gladly share it with you. I live in Bromley South Kent

It also makes a great home plant. I grow some of them outdoors in pots and then put them in the house where they continue to bloom through the winter as long as you feed them and put it next to a bright window

I’ve had my abutilon, variety - Marion, for over 5 years and from cuttings I now have 4 in total. They’ve all grown and propagated outdoors, I’ve never taken them indoors and I don’t have a greenhouse. 3 are in pots and 1 was only planted in the ground this year. Interesting that you think of them as similar to hibiscus, I was told to treat them like fuchsias by someone that owned a nursery of them - I bought the original one at gardeners world in Birmingham. Mine have done very well in full sun - no shade, but had to stay on top the watering during the dry spell. They’ve managed fine with snow and frost. With a mild winter the leaves stay, but I still cut back every spring.

Thanks for the pruning tip. I am revamping a weedy perennial garden. New neighbors don't do weed control. I have a lanky variegated abutilon that I almost pruned to death in the past. Zone 9 Sacramento valley gets very hot and we use to get a hard freeze each winter. Abutilons are reliable but look stressed in too much sun and lay on the ground in too much shade. I cheat sometimes with a trellis.

Once again Craig, just came across another amazing video of yours. Thank you and well done. Something that many people don't know: the flowers are edible, as a child we used to take the middle part out down to the centre but leaving all the rest attached (don't ask me why) and just eat the petals, there is an sweet flavour coming through from the centre as well as a nondescript flavour from the petals, we used to eat them as a snack and suddenly my grandmother's neighbour was puzzled about her abutilon not having any flowers 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 interestingly it was in the middle of her garden in Poertugal, so it must have been rather beaten up in the summer with all that full sun, but no chance of being waterlogged lol And then you ruined it all by talking about Neem oil as pest control lol Yes neem oil works very well, I also use it for my houseplants against all pests. So, if anyone plans to eat the flowers, do not spray neem oil on them, it can upset your tummy. The Apfelsine abultilon, is called apfelsine cos that means orange in German lol Google it for the pronunciation🙂 I also quite liked the ones Mrs Craig likes, its a very nice shade of pink. If I had my way, id be like you = anything but lawn 🙂 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

The one i bought last weekend here in S France is a true red lantern with a yellow diamond band at the base and a black spike at the bottom really lovely; perhaps it's not an abutilon! It is frosty here in the winter - without fail! I will put it in the tunnel in the winter then. I want it on the terrace in a fab pot i have!

I got of these last summer, it survived winter outside (zone 9a), but was very slow to get going again again this summer, so much so that I thought it had died, but it got going again in late July and is now giving me lots of late season colour. I’m hoping it’ll flower quite late into autumn seeing as we don’t often get much frost round here this side of Christmas.

Lots of great tips. Growing abutilon from cuttings for the first time this year in Northern California Zone 9B. They are currently in pots, and the orange one is blooming in my greenhouse. I am trying to figure out the best location in the garden for it. Are they forever perennials, or will I need to start new plants from cuttings every few years to keep them going?

So long as the temps don't get much below freezing they should come back every year. Just prune them back in spring to stop them becoming too leggy 😀

Hello there. I recently just bought one and I am in zone 9A in florida. My plant just got its leaves wilted the first day I planted it. At first I thought it needed more water. However, when I took the matter to google, it said the plant does not need lots of water. Can you tell me what I should do? Should I water it still or not? Would my plant survive summer heat? It can get to 100f degree here or a bit higher than that. Please help me out. Thank you.

I have a red one and I live in Scotland. I intend to leave it outside as they are near a covered decking and it theory it should create a micro climate along with some evergreen plants around it. They are still flowering now and seem to happy to disturb it.

One should always cut back in spring, to app 10 cm of last year's growth.
