I can attest that age hasn't been a factor for my retusa. I took a cutting from a Wal Mart ginseng ficus that was going to be thrown away. It rooted in mid May and is now 2 foot tall and big around as a number two pencil. This being my first fig tree, I didn't know what to expect. I figured at least three years, but that's not the case. I started seeing little white bumps along the trunk about a month ago and went into panic mode. Little did I know that I was looking at the beginning of aerial roots. I've been scrubbing them off as I'm not yet ready for them. Our humidity levels are off the charts and temperature levels range between 90 and 100 degrees. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it too. Loved the video, very informative. Thanks.

I acquired my Ficus Retusa about a year ago (09.06.16) on a cutting from my Spanish holiday. Kept it in a transparent bottle of water even on the plane until I got home😂, was surprised it survived after three days in the bottle (was not dying back). Directly after arriving back in Ireland, I used rooting powder and it successfully started to root! Now a year later I have started ramification with the cut & grow method, got a "v" on every tip and reduced the foliage size to approximately 2.5cm from about 4.0cm previously on the older growth. I have it growing in a green house over this summer in a range of 21 Celsius in morning to 38 Celsius in midday, this temperature is making it grow very fast. I fertilise it with two spoonfuls of bonemeal and chicken poop every week. I have also noticed it producing some roots out of the truck which confused me because I did not know Ficuses have these unique "aerial root" systems, now that I know thanks to your video, I can train them correctly to the soil.

Awesome video!!! I have a ficus bonsai. Not one that grows high like the one in this video but the one with the thicker bulb trunks. I put the ficus inside a plastic container that's clear and tall. Then wrapped some clear wrap around the rest to enclose it. I set up a small lamp to give it more light during the day and I mist it twice a day. Once in the morning and again mid day like you said. During the last 3 weeks it's been growing aerial roots. I'm just waiting on them to reach the soil to see how they'll look when they start to get thicker. I also have a few of them growing over a little statue. So I'm hoping they'll grow over it and anchor the statue to the tree.

Quick question after getting to 8 minutes. When starting to bonsai a tree, would you provide a richer soil until the roots are robust and then start to shape the tree etc? Looking at what you are talking about here as I understand it is as the tree starts to grow and demand more water above from the established canopy, that is the time to repot & keep it thirsty to get aerial roots forming, not when you are starting the plants off. Yes? Or have I got it wrong?

Have you tried regular air layering with soil to grow the roots? For me it worked very good at my room on the windowsill. Are 'soil' roots any worse than ones grown in the air? - they are not straight as natural ones but I also like more dramatic shapes
@CaptainPupu
3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Soil grown roots will not have the desired effect. For Air grown roots the effect you want is that it look like a suspended line. Air layering with soil will result in roots growing around the air layer bag, and it will have the same effect as if grown in soil. Not good. The very nature of this kind of root is that it needs air to reach down. That's the effect. So no, air layer is if you want cuttings.

@Dave_en

Since our city Kolkata is near the river Ganges, there is plenty of humidity all the year round and plenty of sweat comes out during summer. That's the reason we can see almost all banyan trees near the bank of the river develops plenty of Ariel roots which seem like trunks of trees. In Delhi, the climate is dry. So I have designed a work around solution either by using a huge plastic bag filled with air or place a large transparent beaker or container over your bonsai. That way you don't need to water frequently and the plant has all necessary water and moisture to emulate a high humidity environment artificially. Also you can use cylindrical plastic cut out from mineral water bottle and fill cocopeat and coarse sand around the trunk of your bonsai to desired height. Plenty of Ariel roots will grow inside it.

I trim mine after it has had a period of good strong growth and just before it is about to grow again. They can be pruned back hard at this time. They will back bud on the woody growth, younger green branches will die back to the next set of dormant leaf buds.

@TheBonsaiZone
9 жыл бұрын
Zorica Rajic The humidity tray is a good idea and will help increase the humidity around the tree. You might need to put it in a plastic bag to further increase the humidity for your aerial roots to grow. When the tree is in this mini-greenhouse, watch for too high a temperature. If you place a thermometer in with the bag you can keep an eye on it. Mist the tree whenever you can, but don't get the soil too wet. Keep it on the dry side.

I really need help I got ahead of myself and had to repot my Willow ficus or ficus benjamina either way I got it last September and was told the groom at in early summer I live in Missouri so warm weather could be a month away. And the basement I rent has no direct sunlight. I was forced to repot because I had it at my grandma's house where the dog knocked it over spilling all of the soil that came in the nursery pot. Even though it was doing pretty well over there and getting some fresh leaves on top I brought it back put it in an aquarium on rocks and a wider shallower pot in a bucket on rocks was water up to a certain point for humidity the room is used for snakes in chameleons so I have heat lights I put a sheet light in a full spectrum 10000k over when I replanted I made sure to do my research with the planner being about 5 in 6 in deep and 9 inches across I did mess in the bottom drilled all my own holes for drainage where's about an inch and a half to in of lava rock pumice and perlite on the bottom and I have a tree planted in seed starting mix for the roots as it got root right before there is grossly overwatered when I didn't have it and out of the three main sprouts there's one leaf at the tip of two of them and it hasn't changed so it's not getting worse per se but I was wondering if water propagation or some other means were necessary when I noticed the root rot cut it all away scrape some of the bark away and use a powdered rooting hormone so I'm just trying to figure out if I just have to take a wait-and-see approach for the time of year I can put it outside and with all the information on KZitem I don't know whether to paint cinnamon on the roots with a toothbrush or dip it in a banana any help you could give me would be great I'll try to send a picture

Are black tips on the roots a sign of overwatering? I've got a dwarf umbrella tree with some aerial roots...
@TheBonsaiZone
4 жыл бұрын
It is definitely a sign of watering problems, they might have gotten dry at the tips and then died and turned black, or it might be too much water causing the tips to rot. Try a really loose bonsai soil and it makes it much more difficult to over water. This type of soil will allow you to water more often, usually once or twice a day in summer. It could also be from fertilizer, too strong a mix could cause root burn.

It's too difficulty tryed to get the Tree growing roots on the bark - just spray water a few times a day "only" on the bark and it will grow roots there - but watch the Trees reaction, it might looses some leaves fast if this water isn't enough for the tree - but by this method, you can force also low-level branches only a few cm above the surface of the soil, to spread out roots - this looks awesome if you put a Stone below this branch and after a few years, you can see, that this branch is growing to a secondary tree, that's beautiful to watch! Then you can cut off the secondary tree and put it in another pot to let it grow - so, this way you are able to breed some offshoot - if you want to!

great video, Nigel! i wonder how much of this you still stand by. think you're due for an updated aerial roots video and your experiences in recent years! no greenhouse here, dry air in an apartment, decent grow light - my schefflera arboricola is probably less than 3 years old. i've had it for less than a year. in less than a month's time, i've managed to grow many aerial roots by keeping a [clear] plastic bag over the plant (a rubber band secures it to the sides of the pot). i'm fairly certain it's not root bound either. i remove the bag every few days and mist the foliage/trunk/soil/interior of the bag. if i don't remove the bag entirely, i just spray up into the bag. these conditions have not only grown aerial roots, but they also encouraged new growth for an otherwise seemingly dormant plant. if it wasn't dormant, growth had severely slowed down to the point of little to no growth (i don't recall noticing any). might just send you some photos of my own experience. thanks for all that you do and all the knowledge you share!

Thanks for the video. I will be getting a new tiger bark ficus tree in the mail soon. It will be about thick as my thumb. I want to bend the trunk and start creating areal roots. I live in South Carolina so it is hot and humid from June to late September (85 to 92 Fahrenheit). So I can put it in full sun and let it dry out later in the day and give it humidity but my concern is giving it too much intense direct sun and also killing it by letting it dry out for too long (Like if I forget to water it for that day). How long can the soil be dry with out my tree dying? And how can I care for my tree in a more intense summer environment. I will bring my tree inside when temps drop. It will eventually be an indoor tree but for now I want to create areal roots so leaving it out doors for this summer seems the way to go. So any tips you could give me would help. Thank you.
@TheBonsaiZone
4 жыл бұрын
You have to be very careful to water the tree in the morning and the evening and keep it in a humid environment in the hottest parts of the day. You need to keep the tree misted almost continuously if you keep it in a hot greenhouse as it can die from the hot temperatures and lack of cooling water. Some people keep a misting nozzle at the base of the tree to provide a nice cooling mist that keeps the trunk wet and promotes aerial roots. You may get aerial roots in you weather just naturally without a greenhouse. We usually don't get hot enough temperatures and high enough humidity here to get aerial roots on our trees here in Ontario Canada..
@1ChevyGuy375
4 жыл бұрын
I don’t have a green house so I was planning on putting it by the side of the house. I think there will be enough humidity in the summer to help get areal roots. Do you think partial shade would be ok, I can put it in morning sun or afternoon and evening sun. Or just full sun.

Nigel (or anyone that can answer), will the aerial roots die if I remove the bag and keep the tree beside a humidifier indoors with a UV light? In other words, could I display a Ficus with aerial roots indoors for an extended period of time?
@TheBonsaiZone
4 жыл бұрын
If the aerial roots have extended and grown down into the soil, it will be no problem. If the roots are hanging in mid air, they will need to stay in very high humidity to continue to grow without drying up. With modern grow lights and a good setup, you can grow a Ficus indoors all year round. If you have a sunny windowsill, it will do really well also.

I can definitely say that age is not a factor. I have a retusa that rooted in May. Its only about two foot tall and as big around as a number 2 pencil. I've got it. in a course lava, and its dropping aerial roots like crazy. It helps that the humidity stays around 90 percent, and temperature ranges between 90 and 100 degrees. I have mine in a one gallon pot now and I've never seen roots grow so fast. My bougainvillea's don't even grow that fast. I was not expecting to see aerials for at least 3 or 4 years. It may be worth noting that I am pouring the fertilizer to it as well and doesn't seem to mind a bit

No not at all Nigel. I keep my plants kind of close together, and we have a swimming pool that's close by. Plus the humidity is anywhere between 85 and 93 percent most all the time. Our nighttime lows are in the mid to high 70s and its usually in the 80s until 1 or 2 in the morning. It's just like being in south Florida, only without the sea breeze. My red maples are looking iffy at best, but my tropicals have never been happier. I've been scrubbing the aerials off in exchange for vegetation, and probably will continue until I build a trunk along with the first two branches.

I always get aerial roots right after I bring my ficus indoors for the season. Not sure why, but they go crazy then, even with a deep pot and no other intervention.The root growth lasts about a month or so, basically October. By winter it settles down and no more.

Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone Maybe. I was thinking maybe the direct sun was drying out the trunk all summer, and maybe the indirect indoor light, as well as consistent 70 degree temps lets the trunk try to explore. I also water less when it’s brought inside, so could be searching for more water before it readjusts for the winter..

Question for you sir Nigel, Ive been trying to grow cuttings myself, ive attempted 3 times where i would also scar the bottom of a cutting leave it in Growing Hormone for a while then continue to replant it, the problem is within a week the plans all have died, what steps and tips can you give me in making my own Bonsai through cuttings?
@TheBonsaiZone

BlanketAnime Success with cuttings can depend a lot on the type of tree. Some root easily and others can be impossible, or very hard. Ficus cuttings will almost always root in the summer, if outside and the weather is hot. If you are trying to grow cuttings, look it up on the internet, to get specific information on the type of tree you are trying to root. Timing and the condition of the cutting is important. Most trees need a woody cutting from the tip of the branch and planted before the leaves come out. The cuttings need a V shape cut on the bottom to increase the surface area. The cuttings need a mini greenhouse to keep the humidity high, but not too high!

This is making it more difficult then it has to be. Easiest way to get ariel roots is to take a paper towel, roll it into a long bandage shape and soak it with water and then wrap the strip of paper towel around the branch you want the root to grow on. Rewet the towel daily and within a week or two there will be a root growing under the towel, get a straw once it’s long enough and run it into the straw and keep the inside of the straw wet until it hits the soil and then remove the straw.

Ficus trees can be started from root cuttings or aerial roots that have been cut off a tree. It requires a nice warm sunny and humid environment to get the root cutting to grow, check out Jerry's website, it will show the process... www.bonsaihunk.us/

I open the door, it lets most of the heat out. I also have a fan that circulates the air to help keep the trees cool.

Can someone please help me. This bonsai pot has holes in it, correct? So we would also need a tray for it. My husband says no, but the tree had to be wired to the pot?
@TheBonsaiZone

It is very important to have drainage holes in your bonsai pot. They need to be watered thoroughly and then the soil needs to be watered again only when it is beginning to dry out a bit. The trees should be kept outside and only brought inside if you have cold weather that would kill the tree. The tree can be wired into the pot if it is kept in a windy position or until the roots get established. I place rocks on the surface of my soil, this does the same thing as the wiring.

I've got aerial roots that are growing outside the pot, what should I do?
@TheBonsaiZone
3 жыл бұрын
You can trim them off and it will not hurt the tree or if you like them, you can place smaller pots beside the main pot and allow the roots to grow into the new pots. When you go to re pot, you can get a larger pot that will fit all the aerial roots!

@Barry Goldwater i use it mainly on my indoorplants like the ficus. what also works is a black plastic back wrapped loosly around the trunk in order to mimic being under the earth and creating a humit condition. I also put a ficus in a large glass jar and covered the top. This also creates a humit condition. this has created 10 roots within 1 week

Yes, it will grow indoors if you have a nice sunny window for the tree! To grow aerial roots you will need a mini greenhouse on your window sill.

I have no comments or can I confirm or disregard your methods. I can only say that my Ficus Microcarpa grows aerial roots without any extra effort on my part: shallow bonsai pot, vigorous pruning, no special attention to humidity. My Benjamina however, didn't grow aerial roots until I put it in an aquarium, and then it had no problem .... both from the trunk and from the branches. Did I accidentally employ one or more of your methods as well? No idea.
@TheBonsaiZone

BackSeatHump Some people get so many aerial roots, they become a pest and they are always cutting them off to keep the trunk from becoming a tangled mess. In Canada, this will never be a problem!

It reaches over 45°C easily everyday in the summer season... is that bad for my ficuses?
@TheBonsaiZone
7 жыл бұрын
This heat cycle is natural for the trees, and because of the tough leaves, the Ficus trees seem to take heat better than most. If the trees are watered and the air is not too windy or dry, they should be fine. They don't grow as quickly in the high temperature range, they almost go dormant until the cooler weather arrives. For maximum growth they do best around the 35 C degree mark. My Schefflera trees start to die back at temperatures near the 50 C mark. Many of my trees including the ficus, start to get folding leaves forming, instead of flat leaves in high temperatures and full sun.

@TheBonsaiZone
7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, it is common for the bark of a Ficus to have short horizontal white stripes around the trunk and branches. On some Ficus trees it is more of a small spot pattern. I'm not sure if the aerial roots grow from these markings or not. I'll try and find out.
