Hi Kirsten. I’ve not been consistent in fertilizing my grape vines but when I do I go with a 10-10-10 fertilizer in the early spring. Your local garden store should have fertilizer options matching the 10-10-10 but it would be 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphate and 10% potash. The kind of fertilizer I use comes in granular form.

Can thinning be done a month before harvesting, or would that be too late? Thanks!
@backyardal2010

You could thin them that late but I don’t believe that you’ll see the same benefit as if done earlier. Depending on the grape variety; grapes generally take 30-70 days to mature from when the fruit first sets.

Hi. Are Wine grapes able to grow bigger like yours after pruning off some of the vines?
@backyardal2010
10 ай бұрын
Hi! In theory, yes, you should be able to increase the grape size through pruning extra, unneeded vines at the right time. However, wine grapes tend to be smaller than table grapes and this is believed to help in increasing the concentration of the taste which should in turn produce higher quality wine.

Yes, the grapes will tend to be smaller on younger vines but as the vine matures, and with proper pruning, the grapes will get bigger over time.

Normally I wait until the grapes are the size of little bbs, but this year we were going to be gone for a few weeks and so I cut them earlier than I had planned. I don’t believe that it would make a huge difference in doing it earlier vs later but I find it’s a little easier to see how much you’re cutting off if you wait for them to grow just a little bigger.

@@backyardal2010 hey buddy I gave one more question. Do the grapes/ vines get affected by being near the brick wall? When it gets really hot? One of my vines need to be trained but only option is towards and in front of the brick wall. Debating if it's a good idea. Thanks again!
