Here in So Cali the sun dries the top layer too quickly. Our secret is to lay cardboard or a wooden board over the bed of seeds , with a rock or stick under each corner to keep it from directly laying on the bed, until the first seeds germinate, then remove it. This holds the moisture on top . Also one can do watering to the top of the board to let it roll off its sides to water the bed without displacing seeds.

I'm starting to wonder if I just don't water and fertilize enough. I don't want to drown them but, holy moly, they just don't seem to be popping up well. Thank you for the detailed video and I'll make sure to follow your directions to a 'T'!

Lots of water and patience. If you have loose soil that carrots want....2-3 times a day is not uncommon to keep your seeds germinating during hottish days

I’m a new home gardener who has haphazardly grown things all over my yard and pots. I’m looking to increase my yields/production but I don’t know if it’s better to build a bunch of raised beds or grow in the ground in rows. Which method would you recommend or is there a reason you might want both in ground and raised?

There is pros and cons to both. I like raised beds because you do not need as many tools as in ground. I can do everything myself. Also easier for me to plant, harvest and maintain. Less weed pressure also.

I was wondering when you thin can you transplant them? Or are they finicky?

Mine are about 3 weeks after germination and I can thin now. They are about 3 inches tall.

Thank you so much for using the word pithy!! I’m from the South but my wife isn’t. If we get an under watered watermelon I will call it pithy. She says I’m not using that word correctly. She just doesn’t understand us, lol!!

I add sand to the seed since they are so small. Easier to spread
