Chamomile tea is lovely. Last night I had a cup from flowers I harvested last summer. If you are paranoid about the seeds drying out, instead of vermiculite, you can cover the seeds with any transparent plastic. Saran-wrap, a sandwich bag, an old shopping bag, etc. So long as it lets light through, you are good (if it's semi-transparent make sure it has a good light source like a sunny window to get through the plastic to the seeds.) This will keep the moisture in and let light through. I agree about using that tool, and had a similar tool in mind last year when I was harvesting chamomile. If you are looking for an excuse to be outside, of course skip it, enjoy the time picking the flowers. But when the summer heat really comes on in July and August, squatting in the sun for 15 mins to harvest one or two cups of tea was a bit much. To dry them out I put a days worth of harvest, a couple ounces, in a big brown paper shopping bag, closed the bag, and put it in my hot attic. After 3 or 4 days they were well dried and then I would transfer them to a jar. Mine looked quite a bit dryer than yours. I have a sweet tooth so I like to add a tsp of honey for flavor and a tsp of sugar for more sweetness. Speaking of tea, I am curious about growing Yaupon. It's an evergreen shrub native to North America, and the leaves contain caffeine. I've read the flavor is a bit like tea and yerba maté, and can be smokey depending on how the leaves are roasted. I bought some dried leaves to taste test, just waiting for them to get here. The shrubs get fairly large, 5m to 9m, and one shrub could probably provide a substitute for all the tea/coffee someone might want for a year. Very cool. I am not sure if it's suitable for your climate, but I thought you might be interested.

I grew this in the community garden, starting it the summer before covid and then leaving it to grow over covid when I couldn't get out at all really. I did great all by itself with completely natural watering and no help from me. I ended the garden lease after summer and went to clean up the garden, harvesting all of the chamomile heads to dry for tea. I put them all on my dehydrator and set it to run, then went about my work at home day. An hour later I nearly passed out! The soporific warm chamomile smell was so delightful and overpowering. I was dazed, and couldn't stay awake. It was kind of incredible. It wasn't like an emergency, just very peaceful and relaxing like taking a benadryl. If I ever needed proof that it calms you down and makes you sleepy, I certainly got it for myself! But of course, it's been used for thousands of years just for that reason. And that's why I drink it every night at bedtime!

One Roman chamomile grew up in my garden on its own last year. The seed came from birds I think. Its flowers were gorgeous, the tiny white charming ones. I was so happy for its presence. But I didn't know I could collect the flowers to make tea. Right now 3 chamomile plants are growing in my garden from the seeds of the last year one. I can't wait to see the blooms. I will let them stay on the plant for them to dry out by themselves and then use them for tea. Thanks for tips!

Holy crap! I got all my seeds from Urban Farmer this year too. I'm in Chicagoland and they're in Northwest Indiana, so I figured getting seed from a grower close to my zone would be a good idea. So far so good. I've only planted my cool weather crops in the beds. Everything is doing well. Hopefully, Wednesday's snow won't be too bad. I'm going to cover all the beds in clear plastic (or make something that I can leave on until everything is better established. Hi Kevin, first off I would like to say thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am looking for some advice. I am growing some German chamomile plants in my veggie garden, since watching this episode. Every time I want to pick the flowers that are ready for picking, I notice that the tray has very small bugs that seem to fall off the flowers onto the tray. I have not sprayed my plants as I was hoping to leave them organic, as it will be a herbal tea, once all the flowers are dry enough to store. I am not sure if there is anything I can spray the plants with that won't be harmful, once I have collected the flowers. Is there anything you know of that I could use as a spray? Thanks in advance!

Easy to grow.... not my experience at all. Have not tried growing every year but: Year 1: well ok, that year it started growing then we had a sudden heatwave and that heatwave continued into autumn. Growing anything was hard that year. Year 2 didn't even get it to germinate (might have gotten bad seeds) Year 3 tried just sprinkling the seeds next to my squash in a raised bed, well they germinated and then got stunted and then died, I now realize they must have been over-fertilized. This year, I'm going to start germinating them now and then I think I will try having them in the soil I saved from last year maybe not even fertilizing at all, hoping on having at least some success. A frind and neighbor of mine also have struggled with kamomill, maybe it just doesn't like our water or something (full of calcium)

Dog car sickness or anxiety while in a car. We use camomile when we go on trips with our dog, Nick. Sometimes he just starts to feel icky, like driving on a dark, you guessed it, desert highway. Once we see him start to feel icky, we’ll put 1 tea bag in his no-spill water bowl. Swirl it around, wait about 5 or so minutes and let him start lapping it up. Not more than 20 minutes later, he’s looking, acting and appears to feel better. Good luck in the car and the garden and until next time keep on gardening.
