Thank you for this video. I collected hundreds of Texas redbud seeds and used your boiling water stratification method with soaking for 48 hours. I planted the seeds 10-30-20 outside for winter stratification. On 1-30-21 seeds started sprouting. I now have 15 sprouts and expect many more sprouts to come. Thank you from Austin, Texas!

Used your boiling water method and planted in seed trays with plastic dome and left outside. Mid-March removed the dome. Been anxiously checking the tray every couple days and was getting frustrated as we have had pretty warm weather all month. Then, finally today 4/26/22 I found 3 of the 48 seeds had germinated! I am sure there will be more. Thank you so much for the video. I cannot wait to see how these grow. My kids are young and they helped me collect and plant these seeds. Planting them in a coldframe greennhouse in winter can speed up the cold stratification process, as it has a much more dramatic freeze/thaw cycle. I find the dramatic temperature variations help to REALLY wake up seeds that have a dormancy. I've had peach and redbud seeds spout in just 3 weeks while winter sown in a coldframe. I always do the boiling water method then plant them around December 20th. Not sure why I choose that date but planting in a cold frame around that date seems to work for me.

@@growitbuildit If the seeds have just passed through an historically cold winter, do they still need to be cold stratified after scarification?
@growitbuildit
3 жыл бұрын
If the seed sat outside with good contact with the ground all winter, it may not need anything. If the seed looks larger than a 'un-scarified/stratified' seed, then it has probably imbibed the water. But if the seed looks tiny, like it just came out of the pod, it probably needs to be put through the whole process. I'm saying this because the seed should naturally absorb water and swell over the course of the winter with freeze/thaw cycles. So it completes it's stratification over time, with water absorbed. When we soak them, we check to see if they imbibed the water, and if so - then stratify or winter sow them for at least 30 days.
@mickeyoneill7896

@@growitbuildit Thanks! I have several that definitely appear to have imbibed the water, and will plant them now. The remaining seeds will go in the fridge in wet paper towels for a month. What then? More boiling water? Just soak 'em? Appreciate your thoughts!

great video! very helpful and informative example of the methods you tested. I have been doing cold stratification for milkweed for 3 years and started with testing freeze/thaw (1-2 weeks) between freezer-> fridge-> freezer vs the standard 30-60 days in only the refrigerator. The rapid freeze/thaw (seeds stratified in hydrated peat pellets for ground freeze and soil contact) has produced the same or better % sprouts but in 1/4 of the time and even a short 5-7 day freeze/thaw had the same speed but with a few needing an extra freeze/thaw to sprout. Have you tested rapid stratification or freeze/thaw on the redbud seeds since this video or do you have recommendations on which order to test this?
@growitbuildit
2 жыл бұрын
Hi - I have not tested rapid stratification. I usually just try to make sure I can winter sow everything, and I don't have problems. I could see testing this if I was in a pinch, but you could still just stratify some of the seed at 30 days in the fridge after scarifying.

Hi Emma - if the seedlings are not surviving it is usually a watering issue in my experience. Too much water can easily cause fungus that in-turn kills the tree or cause root-rot. Also, the more sun they get, the better. As far as overwintering, I've had some freeze out on me when stored in pots. But I'm guessing I live in a much colder climate than you.

I have a young tree in my yard and it started growing pods from mid-summer here in zone 7b. I figured the seeds may still need time so I waited until now in early October. The few pods I checked still have a majority of flat seeds, but a few were bigger and fuller (spherical?) Should I wait until November or December to harvest more optimum seeds?

Hi - thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you are finding value in the articles and videos. In regards to your question, if the pods are turning brown and starting to dry out, then they are ready for harvest. They should be a bit crispy when you try to open one up. Now, pay close attention to them by looking/feeling every few days. As once they are truly ready it doesn't take long for the squirrels/birds to gather them all up.

That is awesome you got so much germination. For separating seedlings, with trees, I do it fairly early. If you even begin to see a single true leaf (heart shaped) you can separate them. When you separate, you are disturbing the roots, so make sure you keep it in shade for several days after separating to allow the roots to reattach themselves to soil.

@growitbuildit
11 ай бұрын
Redbuds are generally (are often) multi-trunk trees that can grow a bit erratically with zig-zagging branches. But if it is in full sun, and gets sun from all directions, it should grow straight (in general) when viewed from a distance w/ leaves on it. In Winter though, you will see all the crazy branching. The overall shape of the crowing is usually wide spreading If your tree is in shade, or is shaded from one side (E/S/W) then it may arch and try to angle itself to get more sun. There isn't a ton you can do to counteract this, but you can prune in very late Winter / very early Spring to help keep it shaped better. When you find Redbuds growing in deep woods, their trunks can often follow and s-pattern or arch significantly as they seek out pockets of sunlight through the canopy.

Hi - you can move them when they are very tiny. If they have 2-3 leaves that are heart-shaped, then it should be ok. Once you transplant them though, place the pots in the shade for 3-4 days. This will reduce transplant shock and allow the roots to re-bond w/ soil. It really helps a lot.

Can anyone please help me out, I am from Australia and the summer is just starting here, I am very much into Bonsai and I actually have a redbud and it was in a big pot and the tree was fairly strong, around the mid spring we transferred it into a smaller pot (bonsai pot) and had to cut down branches and the root system. To give you the run down. 1. I have used well drained soil. 2. Kept it in partly shade. 3. Well watered. 4. The root system was fairly strong and is enough to support the entire tree. 5. Root system = size of the tree. Long story short, it has been almost a month and the tree is not showing any sign of recovery. But it still is holding on only 3 leaves 🤷🏻♂️. Just wondering is it trying to recover from a shock or are they a pain in the ass of a tree?
@growitbuildit
4 жыл бұрын
Hi - in my experience they are generally easy to grow. You can pretty much always transplant something to a bigger pot without issue. But going to smaller pots may not always work, due to the damage to the roots. They normally have a taproot, which doesn't like to get cut. In normal conditions, if you are transplanting/moving a tree from the ground you can only do it (relatively safely) when the tree is dormant, aka not actively growing. If yours had leaves on it when you transplanted it that would be a heck of a shock. If it is still holding onto a few leaves, I would just wait and see. These are fast growing trees, so even if you had to start over it wouldn't take that long to grow to a good size. Good luck!

Hi Tamara. Multi-trunk just means that there will be 3-4 trunks for a single tree. While most trees have a single trunk that reaches up, Redbuds and some other trees (Silver Maple) often have multiple 'main' trunks. The first picture in this article shows a multi-trunked Redbud tree. It isn't the greatest pic for showing it, but you can see about 4 trunks coming from the base (which is unfortunately hidden behind a bush). growitbuildit.com/eastern-redbud-tree-facts-care-cercis-canadensis/ For all the trees I've germinated, I've seen several where the trunk splits into 2-3 trees just above the soil. But, most of the trees I've germinated are just single trunks.

Cold Stratification should occur after Scarification. Most references say 60 days. If you have enough seeds, I would suggest stratifying half of your seeds for 30 days. Then, plant those. I would probably try the sand method for stratification - see here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/q3-dv5marnaagGk I'm hoping you get some good germination from them. Could they possibly grow? Yes. It doesn't hurt to try. But, if you gathered these seeds from your parents home, I would suggest that you go back to see if there are any 'volunteer' seedlings growing this Spring. If you see any really tiny seedlings with the heart shaped leaf, then maybe just dig a few up? I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to get permission from your parents! Just make sure you give them some space when you dig them - aka make sure there is at least several inches of space from the stem where you dig. You want to preserve as much of the roots as possible. Good luck!

Hi Donna- I'm sorry to hear about your parents. I would try to imbibe them right away. So, boil water, take off the boil and wait a bit. Then dump into the coffee cup. Once they have imbibed (you may need to do it twice), then stratify them. For these seeds, as long as they have imbibed, I think either paper towel or sand would work. These seeds are supposed to have a 60 day stratification period. I would give it the entire two months, as you have a limited supply of seed. Then, plant 1/8" to 1/4" deep in a decent sized pot (6" or so) as it will be a larger moisture reservoir. Keep them moist (not soaking wet) until germination. If you get germination, I get them into a larger pot as soon as true leaves form. And just try to grow them as large as you can. If you intend to keep them in a pot, make it a large one. The smallest ones I've transplanted into the ground (in Autumn) were about 1' tall. I'll go try to find those today to make sure they survived (one was attacked by deer). However, depending on how harsh your winters are you could over winter them in a pot. One year I lost a lot of trees in pots, the second time I did this I didn't lose hardly any (but the winter was quite mild).
