Fatsia japonica is an attractive broadleaf evergreen shrub, native to Japan and parts of the Korean Peninsula. It is in the Araliaceae family. Fatsia goes by so many names, Paper Plant, as its leaves feel like construction paper, False Castor, as it resembles the Castor Oil Plant (Ricinus cummunis), and Japanese Aralia.
Fatsia japonica is purely ornamental, as it has somr toxicity to it.
Fatsia offers a tropical aesthetic to the temperate rain garden. Here in the western pacific cordillera, this plant enjoys our slightly acidic soil and heavy annual rainfall.
This plant can be grown indoors as a houseplant, however it is much smaller and slower growing indoors when compared to outdoors.
When growing as a houseplant, ensure that this plant receives as much light exposure as possible for best growth. When growing outdoors, I recommend partial shade.
These plants are exceptionally cold hardy, cold hardy to ~ -20°C, despite their tropical appearance.
Fatsia japonica requires relatively low maintenance. I would out this plant at a 2 or 3 in difficulty out of 10, when grown outdoors.
This plant performs best in soils that are constantly evenly moist, but not waterlogged.
Fatsia is a heavy feeder! For the largest leaves, I recommend watering with a full strength all purpose liquid feed fertilizer, once a week during the active growing season.
This plant has palmately compounded leaves, and a glossy to matte leaf blade surface. Plants may be multistemmed, or single stemmed.
Plants have a white to creme coloured conpound bloom that emerges when outdoor temperatures are consistently ~15°C, which is April here in British Columbia.
Fatsias have a wide range of heights. all are broad, exceeding 5 feet in width upon maturity.
Two varieties are shown in the video, common Green Fatsia and Fatsia 'Spider's Web', an interesting variegated alternative. Generally speaking, the less variegation a Fatsia has, the taller it will grow. Fully green varieties can grow to a height of up to 30 feet outdoors (8 to 10 feet is more typical in indoor environments)
As always, let me know if you have any questions:) Best of luck in your growing endeavers and God bless fam❤❤🙏🥰🕺
